Chapter 62: Dark Thoughts
Chapter 62: Dark Thoughts
The people of Yindu presented a stark contrast to those of Yan and the Great Steppe.
Their physical appearances varied, with some having dark skin as black as night while others possessed fairer complexions.
It was a stark departure from the pale and seemingly frail white complexion of the people of Yan.
However, it wasn’t just the physical differences that set them apart.
Ayera, having spent some time among the people of Yindu, observed that they had a unique social structure known as the caste system.
This system enforced rigid divisions within their society, determining one’s social status and role from birth.
In the caste system, individuals were born into specific social groups called castes, which defined their occupation, social standing, and even their interactions with others.
The caste one was born into dictated their opportunities, privileges, and limitations throughout their life. It was a deeply ingrained system that governed every aspect of their society.
The caste system in Yindu created distinct boundaries between different groups, and interactions between castes were often regulated and limited.
Social mobility was challenging, with individuals typically remaining within their assigned caste throughout their lives, with few opportunities for upward movement.
For Ayera, coming from a different cultural background, this caste system seemed foreign and peculiar.
The rigid divisions and limitations placed on individuals based on their birth went against her own beliefs and her own culture.
In the culture that she grew up with, you fight for what you want. And what you take is yours.
And what is yours could be shared. There is Skyfather above and Earth Mother below and while there is high and low between mortals, the high and lows could be changed.
The wheels of fortune are like a wheel, it turns and turns and sometimes, the high become the low, and the low become the high.
The fortune could change. And people are not born into things.
It was a stark contrast to the more fluid way of life she was accustomed to in the Great Steppe.
As Ayera continued her journey and learned more about the culture and customs of the people of Yindu, she would encounter the complexities and nuances of their society, further deepening her understanding of their way of life.
But at that time, she did not come there to learn about the way of life of the Yindu.
She came there exploring.
And the reason why she explores Karkotta is because she learns from one of the wise men that travels through the Steppe, that there is something called the Naraka Griha.
It teaches the art of killing. The old wise men, a Wizancai told her this story Wizancai is the title given to Old Wizard of the North.
The people of Marynku have Ashana to divine the meaning of the Eartha and Heaven above, to hear the Song of the wind, to hear the melody of the grass swaying and interpret its meaning.
But for the people of Ashran, they listen to Wizancai. These are old man that studied the ancient words of their ancestors, and they walk the Aertha, and speak of things.
The Wizancai told her that if she were to ride to Karkotta and seek the Naraka Griha, she would find it and she would have the opportunity to learn.
She went and one day she was walking and she was kidnapped.
She spoke the word that the Wizancai told her to spoke when she is in danger that she could not escape from in Karkotta.
She was young at that time.
Only thirteen years old.
She said "Narakasya Varam Gatu" and the person who had kidnap her release her and run away from her in fear.
She wanders the city and when night came, she sleeps and when she woke up, she woke in Naraka Griha
It might be a branch of Naraka Griha. The place she stayed in appears like a temple and a house.
And there are many doors in that house. It is a residence and people seem to ignore and avoid that residence.
There is no sign signifying that it is Naraka Griha but everyone seems to know that it is.
There is a blind waif, a deaf young woman, and a mute old man in that house.
A day after she went out of that house to see where she ended up. And she saw that house is large and long.
However, it sits on one of the poorest slums of the city.
Everyday there would be people that would come into the house from its many doors. They are usually suffering men and women.
They would come, and they would sacrifice some things. And they spoke of their anger, grievances, and despair
But it was the deaf that listen to these grievances, and those who guide them inside is the blind waif
The mute old man would take their sacrifice. Ayera did not understand the scene she saw at that time.
However, she felt more and more that the house that she lives in felt more like a temple than a house.
She felt that the air is heavy with a sense of spiritual energy, and a distinct aura of mystery permeates the surroundings.
She felt the devotion and reverence that the people felt when they spoke to the deaf young woman, when they are escorted by the blind waif and when they offer sacrifices to the mute old man
Ayera wondered why. Could the deaf heard their prayers and grievances? Could the blind waif point a way out?
Could the mute old man tell them whether their sacrifice is accepted or not? Everything was weird in Naraka Griha.
Like it operates by its own common sense.
Those who came, are all poor people. And are all despairing in their own way.
The house itself is one of a kind. A luxurious like structure in the middle of the slums.
The entrance to the house is adorned with intricate carvings, depicting scenes from ancient myths and legends of Yindu.
There are hundreds of small statues of horrifying beings like it is there to prevent evil from entering.
There are spires and elaborate domes.
If you came from the front, you will see a vast hall
The air is filled with the sweet scent of incense, mingling with the soft chanting of prayers.
The hall is illuminated by flickering oil lamps, casting a warm glow that dances upon the polished marble floors.
There are many doors and, in every door, there is a mystery
Ayera once go into one of these doors. And in the door, she enters, she saw a statue.
A woman with fierce expression.
The statue is a remarkable work of art, intricately carved from black stone. It is the statue of Ahumunda Kali.
A goddess of destruction in Yindu. However, the statue she saw in Naraka Griha is very different from the statue she once saw in the many temples all over Karkotta.
The goddess in that room just like her other statue has multiple arms, standing tall and fierce, her skin a deep shade of blue.
Her eyes, filled with intensity, seem to pierce through the soul of those who gaze upon her. In her many hands, she wields all kinds of weapons
However, there is something very dark about this sculpture. The one ion the other temple has her expression appears gentle.
But in that house, in that room, the statue of Ahumunda Kali shows a fierce eye, her tongue lolled, and she is in the posture of killing
She looks more like a demon than a goddess.
Surrounding the statue are smaller sculptures, each representing something
And out of these many sculptures, there is three sculpture that is large than the other small sculpture.
There is a demon-like creature statue, whose eyes seems to be wrapped by the torn clothes of the goddess statue.
A blind demon, the sight of the demon covered by Ahumunda Kali. Then there is a demon whose ears is pierced by one of the weapons of Ahumunda Kali from one of her arms.
And the last of the three is a demon whose mouth is being sewn shut.
The craftsmanship and attention to detail in these sculptures are exquisite, capturing the nuances of expression and movement with great skill.
She felt like the house itself holds many mysteries.
There, she learns the art of killing. It is a pity that she only learns only the miscellaneous skill and then she returns to her tribe.
She was there for six months. But she failed in one of her tests. And so, she was sent back home.
But even though she only learns a few things from there, she had learned how to feel and sense someone killing intent.
The memory of her life back then flashed by in an instant and she quickly focus back on her current situation
She is still in his tent. And she is looking at Aeryon. Her eyes seem to try to see this man. This man however is different from the many men he met
There is something very different about him. Like a contradiction of two souls. That is what she felt.
"A killing intent directed at me"
"For what?" she thought to herself.
She wonders what makes Aeryon who was smiling and laughing with her just now, suddenly developed a killing intent toward her
She did not understand. But there is a dagger inside her sleeve. A dagger that is ready to fly
If she fights him with strength, yesterday defeat would be repeated. But if she competes with him in speed, the outcome is fifty fifty.
But then that killing intent dissipated in almost an instant.
"You are a guest. And if the talk went well with your father, it is not an impossibility for you to become my wife"
Aeryon did not beta around the bust and this is a trait admired by the people of the Great Steppe
"Bring your people to the tribe. I will allocate an area for you and your entourage to stay."
She nodded
With a silent acquiescence, she turned to leave the tent.
Aeryon watched her retreating figure, a mixture of regret and resignation flickering in his eyes.
"It’s a pity," he muttered to himself.
"A pity that we are destined to be enemies."
Pausing for a moment, a glimmer of hope sparked within him.
"But perhaps it doesn’t have to be that way," he whispered, his naive nature clinging to the possibility of a different outcome.
He wished deep in his heart that whatever transpired, Ayera would remain unharmed.
As long as she didn’t cross certain boundaries, Aeryon still held the capacity to spare her.
Even though he already decided to strengthen his heart, in the end, there is still a trace of naivety in his nature.
He hopes that whatever happens, that it would not implicate the girl.
"But if you are against me.... then don’t blame me for being merciless"
He muttered as he balls his fist full of determination.
