Chapter 46: Belarion
Chapter 46: Belarion
As for Belarion, he also got a new job
Belarion is training new horse riders.
But Belarion has never been a good teacher. Fortunately, enough, they all have the same kind of skill, of riding horses, using bows and arrows and most of them are skilled fighter.
Mayeux suggested to him to pick a few skilled fighter and let them train the young ones.
Belarion follows the order and he only need to supervise them every once in a while.
But most of the time, he is free. Mayeux and Aeryon both of them able to see that while Belarion is a good commander he is not a good trainer and that is fine.
However, the reason why Mayeux insisted in putting him to supervise the training is simply so that his presence in the army and military is known.
And everyone knows the loyalty of Belarion as he is the sworn brother of the Chief.
Mayeux formulated a simple plan. He knows Belarion ability to lead soldiers in battle but he also acknowledged the weakness of Belarion. He is someone who could not teach people to be strong. Because he has never been weak.
Born with innate strength, he rarely fell sick and his strength is beyond mortal men. Even when he is child, a grown man could not win against him. He is like a little bear that rampages around
Only the Ashana could calm him down, singing songs that calms the crying and the anger tantrum of such a child.
He never experiences how it felt like to be powerless or weak. He has been strong since the beginning.
So, he does not know how to train a weak person to become strong.
So, Mayeux simply think differently when thinking on how to make Belarion the trainer of this new army
And so, he found a different solution
He does not need to train each soldier personally and neither does he needs to be present at all of the training.
As long as he appears to train them, the recruit would be close to him and notice his presence.
When the next time the tribe rides again, the recruit could follow Belarion order and acknowledge him as their military leader.
Belarion only needed trained soldiers. Gives him that and he could wreck an army larger than his.
In the Southern Great Steppe, since there are no large tribes, there is even more lack of person born with innate strength.
Mayeux could already see the victory.
Belarion however does not understand all of these intricacies.
He only follows the order of his sworn brother.
When morning came, he would come to the training ground, look and greet some of the warriors and the horse riders when he is bored, he would pick a few dozen of them to wrestle with him
Every dawn he would ride his horse. And today instead of checking the warriors, Belarion rides his horse and goes riding.
His horse name is Nagaraja.
It is the name that the Ashana had suggested to him when he wanted to name his horse. It means the Mount of Naga.
Naga means dragons in the culture of the Ashran
His name literally translated to the Mount of Dragon. The name could also mean, the King of Dragons.
There is a reason why he gave his horse a name like this.
His horse accompanied him when he became twelve. All he previous horses that he had ride, either die or could not follow him.
Only this one could ride alongside him.
Belarion, with his loyal steed beneath him, traversed the endless expanse of the steppe since he was young.
And just like when he was young, he once again rides his horse and rides across the green vast expanse, trying to think
The golden rays of the sun stretched across the horizon, casting a warm, amber glow that painted the grassy plains in hues of emerald and gold.
As he rode, a gentle breeze whispered through his hair, carrying with it the scent of wildflowers and the earthy aroma of the land.
Lost in his thoughts, Belarion mind turned to his sworn brother, Aeryon
He sighed
Belarion does not like to think. It is not because he could not. He just is not good with it
The Gods is fair. They gave him strength beyond any mortal but temper it with lack of intelligence.
But lack of intelligence does not exactly mean he is stupid. He just never bother to think too much.
In the tribe, he is loved and cared for. And he rarely had any danger. Owing to his great strength he never had any threat when hunting
He is also the sworn brother of the only son of the Chief. So, his childhood while harsh was not dangerous.
He never had to think too much. But now, he seems to want to think
Because only by thinking could he understand his brother. And only then could he aid and help his brother.
Battle, that he understood. Politics, schemes and plots....this is beyond him. But he tries his best. Aeryon when he wants to think would do the same as him.
He would ride his horse, look at the vast expanse of the steppe, stops his horse and contemplate matter.
It is the same for Belarion with one difference. He find it easier to think when he is riding his horse.
So, even now, even as he is thinking his horse is still running.
But the horse, like it could tell the mood of his master, slow down, from running to simply cantering.
"Andawan....." And Belarion sighed
He could not help but sighed
Aeryon and him had been together since childhood.
They share many experiences together
But his brother has been a little weird since he falls down unconscious.
And there is many things that made him feeling weird. He knows Aeryon. He fought with him in the past
Aeryon is strong for a youth his age. But compared to him, Aeryon was weak. That is why he always protected Aeryon in the past
But, he saw how Aeryon fight in the battles. No swords, spears or arrow touches him. His sword strike are all powerful and he remains vigorous even after hours of fighting
That kind of thing is not normal.
And no matter how stupid Belarion is, he is not that stupid. Aeryon is not someone born with an innate strength.
Even though the rumours spread by now, Belarion and the Elders are all very aware that this is far from the truth
Aeryon was checked at birth and he was not someone born of innate strength. If he did, the matter would have spread and he would not fall sick as easily as Aeryon did when they were children
"How?" he seems to be asking the question to the wind Belarion is not jealous. Or envious. He is just worried. It is fine if his brother really have innate strength
But if he did not possess innate strength...then what is the source of that strength during the battle?
And his sworn brother after waking up in Northshire become more unpredictable.
He knows that his sworn brother has great ambition.
But that ambition had to take a backseat when his father died.
And he knows his brother is bold.
And that is why instead of trying to vie with the Xewa tribe and Ghar tribe, his brother chose to retreat to further south, to Northshire.
Belarion himself is more in favour of fighting the Xewa and Ghar tribe.
But when his brother chose not to, he follow the order of his brother. When he fell sick on the road, Belarion was quite distraught.
He did not know what he would do if Aeryon had died. Now, that he is alive and well, Belarion found out that it is becoming harder to know the intention of his brother
It was like he is around the Elders, whose words are always cryptic and the action always seems so unfathomable.
He reined in his horse, its hooves stirring up a cloud of dust as they came to a halt.
"I could not clear my mind at all" he muttered to himself. Belarion has all the making of a great warrior.
He is powerful, he is charismatic and even though he seems a bit naïve there is a certain charm to him
And his voice is deep and commanding
He sighed
The sound of a nearby stream reached his ears, its gurgling melody offering respite from the rhythmic beat of hoofbeats.
Dismounting, Belarion approached the stream, its crystal-clear waters reflecting the shimmering sunlight.
Leaning against a moss-covered rock, Belarion cast his gaze towards the distant sun, contemplating the possibilities that lay ahead.
His brow furrowed as he wondered about his brother intentions
And he sighed again.
"He’s always seemed to have a plan. Presumably, this time he also have another plan. Even I could see that my brother seems to have changed his course"
Belarion is the few people that knows the true intention of his brother when he seek to retreat to Northshire.
His brother had told him that when he goes to Northshire, he intends to join the Northshire army with the tribe, make contribution and then after gaining some power and influence, he would go attack the Xewa and Ghar tribe using the authority of the Princes of the Yan Empire.
His brother at that time could see that the Yan Empire is in a process of division.
His brother does not like colluding with the Yan because the yan has always suppressed his people and there were many children of the Steppe that is slaughtered by the Yan
They were treated like cattle by the Yan people while at the same time painting them as barbarians for doing the same thing to them
His brother told him all of his pans because he wanted him to support him. And Belarion knowing the reason for his brother retreat decided to support him
But now.....the plan that Aeryon had told him all those nights ago has veered so far off the course, it looks entirely different from the plans that Aeryon had concocted.
And, so, there is a question in his mind.
"What are you planning?" Belarion muttered under his breath, his voice carried away by the wind.
