Chapter 399: What Is Your Ambition?
Chapter 399: What Is Your Ambition?
But today, Jayeux words had come true so Norgai did not call the elders. The elders was wrong and Jayeux was rightIt is then reasonable to talk to the right one.
he called Jayeux to ask his opinion on what he has to do. Norgai look at the tall man behind Jayeux and he raises his eyebrows.
This is Jayeux guard and the conversation that they are about to talk about is not something that a guard should know about
But Norgai also knows that this guard ahs always been accompanying Jayeux and it is in bad manner to order other people subordinate.
Not to mention he is now seeking advice from people
One humbles himself when asking for help unlike the Yan people.
Jayeux of course could see that Norgai did not want his guard to listen and so Jayeux uses his hand to dismiss his guard.
The guard understood and quickly goes out of the tent
He look at Norgai and he could see this chief wanted to ask his opinion
Jayeux of course understood this but he need the chief to say it before he could offer advice
"It is a pleasure to see the Chief again. What is the matter? " Jayeux asked.
Norgai sighed for a second and then he said
"Now there is Brolgadhr on the south, the Cha Ner Ul Alliance on the west and on the East, there is Yindir and Dayan watching covetously. Haish"
Saying all of this he sighed again
Jayeux looks at this and he could not help but think that this chief has a bit of that Yan elegance of talking in round.
He then continue saying
"There is trouble all over the tribe. No matter how powerful I am, all of these tribes are powerful tribes. And they could even cooperate with each other. "
Jayeux hearing this could not help but nodded.
In his mind he is also analyzing the matter
To the west is the Ultar tribe but one could not see them as a single entity.
If the battle of Haltur concluded, Ultar would surely change its gaze toward the North or the east.
If it’s toward the north, then the Nogai tribe would be safe
But it has never been wise putting your life on the hands of a potential enemy
Norgai also knows this, hence he did not count out the possibility of being attacked by the Ultar tribe.
As for Yindir and Dayan tribe these two tribes is not that much of a threat when one look at them individually.
Yindir could even be said to have less combat power when compared to Nogai tribe.
because Norgai, the chief tribe., while he is not exactly a person who could fight for hegemony, he is a great warrior that could fight.
This is something Jayeux had seen with his own eyes
Norgai sometime would go to the training grounds and he would spar with his warriors. He is so strong that this chief reminded him of Belarion
Most warriors are trained to protects the chief. But there is no warrior in the tribe that could defeat Norgai.
So, it begs the question. is it the warriors that is protecting the chief, or is it the chief that is protecting these warriors when they fight in battle?
So, Yindir when compare din combat power would lose to Nogai tribe. But the world is not based on this kind of calculations.
It is more complicated than that.
Dayan is also the same in that they would not have enough power to threaten Nogai strength in the battlefield.
But humans are not stupid.
If they could not defeat Nogai alone, why could not they organize and allied with each other.
Why did Norgai did not attack Yindir when he knows Yindir tribe would be such a threat?
It is simple.
Because he fears the moment he attacks Yindir, Dayan tribe would be threatened.
And what will Dayan chief leader would do when they feel that they are threatened?
They will ally with Yindir tribe regardless of past enmity to defend Yindir.
Because only by defending Yindir, they could defend themselves.
And what will happen if during his attack toward Yindir, other tribes meddle in this matter?
Cha Ner Ul Alliance would never accept Nogai tribe.
Even if they accept it, Norgai tribe would not have a say in an alliance that is dominated by the original three tribes.
There is complications all over his area.
Once he makes a move, it would be a battle that determines the fate of the tribe
If he is just a general or a commander of an army, Norgai would not have this many hesitations.
He would just fight and let it all flow according to fate.
He might even be able to replicate Aeryon feat of escaping from danger and turning crisis into opportunity.
But right now, he is the chief.
One wrong move and his entire tribe could be buried with him.
His father, and his brother hopes are on his shoulders.
His father never wanted him to fight for the world but to make sure there is a place for his tribe in the world
Regime rises and fall and it is not their place to think about the rise and fall of the world. They only have a humble wish.
To protect these families which has trusted the Nogai family for hundreds of years
Norgai dares not make a move because he fears all of this. He did not have an idea on how to break this deadlock. Hence, he called Jayeux.
This young man claims himself to be a strategist.
Before when Jayeux proposed that Aeryon would send his army north, no one in his tent supported this young man.
Even Norgai think that this young man is only boasting. The only reason why he did not expose such boastful words is because Jayeux is the disciple of Mayeux, the advisor of the Kan
He must have some talents.
And now, only after a few days since he make that declaration, the Kan army had taken Wustkazan and the defeat of Wustkazan was really swift shocking the entire Southern Great Steppe.
Now, Norgai look at this young man with different feeling.
This young man must truly have great talents that could help him tide this difficulty.
Before, this young man has spoken such words towards him and one could say that this Jayeux has no bad intention.
Instead, if he had believed Jayeux at that time, he could even uses the chaos and take a bit of area of the Wustkazan before Aeryon send all of his men to stake his claim.
Doing it right now would instead provoke the Brolgadhr tribe.
If it’s before, he could take some and leave some and win the favour of the Brolgadhr.
Now, he could not do such a thing.
There were many things he could have done if he had believed Jayeux words that the Wustkazan would be attacked. He could take the initiative to harass the Cha Ner Ul Alliance, he could take a chance to attack Yindir and cooperate with the Brolgadhr
But there is no medicine for regret. Now, the only thing he wanted is the solution to his current problem
"Please help me" Jayeux seeing this nodded. At least, he knows how to be humble.
Jayeux was silent for a second and he close his eyes.
Norgai did not say anything about this.
It looks like Jayeux is thinking of something.
The time passes but Norgai did not say anything to urge Jayeux.
What he ask of Jayeux is really hard. After all, he himself did not know what to do and what path should he choose to ensure the safety of his tribe. He fears of making the wrong decisions and plunges his entire tribe into a road of no return.
Jayeux then opens his eyes, he bows a little and then he ask
"before, I offer any advice, I wanted to know the ambition of the Chief"
Norgai hearing this think for a moment. He could tell that the answer to this question would determine how Jayeux would answer his question.
"I want to protect my tribe. I do not have the desire to fight for hegemony. I just wanted to protect the legacy of my father and my great ancestors"
Hearing this Jayeux nodded
"May I ask, do you really have no such ambition?"
Hearing this Norgai sighed.
"I have learned fighting since I was child and my hope has always been to lead a large army and fight against enemies and create great deeds so that my story would be immortalized in the stories of the Steppe. I want my name to be carved in the Giant Steele all over the Great Steppe"
Chuckling bitterly, Norgai added
"But how could I do that and risk the life of my tribesmen. If there is a chance to win, I would not mind to fight. But there is too many enemies. All sides have enemies. Even Vihur tribe from above has begun to move. One wonders what is their plans. If they see how vulnerable my tribe right now and attack, while I am confident to be able to repel their leaders, could I repel tens of thousands of men alone? I bet even Belarion could not do that no matter how strong he is"
The silence appeared in the tent. Jayeux waited
