Way of Overlord -
Chapter 203: Curtain Rises
Chapter 203: Curtain Rises
For ages, intertribal conflicts had been the norm, driven by the struggle for resources, especially in the face of harsher weather conditions in recent years.
However, the conquest of Nurshira offered a new perspective, a novel avenue to attain wealth without escalating intertribal feuds.
Raiding and pillaging had long been a part of their way of life, but the idea of targeting Yan cities had been largely considered beyond reach.
The victory of Aeryon and his counterparts shattered this notion, opening their eyes to the possibility of raiding Yan cities, previously deemed impervious.
The Yan Empire, with its perceived invincibility, had been a distant but untouchable entity.
The success of the four chiefs demonstrated that it was indeed possible to challenge and conquer these cities, offering a tantalizing opportunity for the tribes to secure substantial riches without provoking deadly feuds among themselves.
The realization dawned that if Aeryon and his tribes could achieve such a feat, why couldn’t they?
The tribes possessed unparalleled horsemanship and agility, enabling swift raids and quick retreats.
The allure of targeting Yan cities for their resources and riches began to captivate the minds of the tribes, planting seeds of ambition and possibility in the once-unimaginable prospect of raiding the formidable Yan Empire.
Like Aeryon had predicted, his victory would embolden the people of the Great Steppe to ride south and attack Yan.
It could also be a way for the chief to handle internal problem by focusing outward problem.
The four tribes, the Sordkazan, the Esbizuk, the Brolgadhr and the Khagai tribe rose to prominence once more after this victory.
And everyone notice something about these four tribes that went to the south.
These are all tribes that is either strong or becoming strong and that all of the four tribes is the tribes that are rising steadily in the Southern Great Steppe.
The Khagai has always been a strong tribe on the western part of the Southern Great Steppe. Disciplined warriors, brilliant tactics and strategy of war, a great commander and chief
These are the things that comes to the mind of the chief when they think about the Khagai tribe
And then there is the Esbizuk tribe. This tribe could not be considered small but they are not big either
The past chief before Dama is also a very brave chief but it was Dama that now expands the territory of his tribe.
Dama is fierce, brutal and fearsome. He could subdue the mountain people to fight alongside him and when they fight they fight like hyenas, tearing apart their opponent without mercy
Fighting against Dama, one rarely surrenders for Dama hated weak people and weak people in his eyes is not worthy to live.
A warrior with a hint of madness to him. In a peaceful era, such person would be buried under the tides of time
But this era is an era of chaos. And an era of chaos favours someone like him. Then there is the Sordkazan chief, Karnain. He is not young like Dama but he is cautious and he knows when to take opportunity and to avoid danger and misfortune
An old wolf that is quickly rising to become a player in the region
He also expands and there is a tendency for him to uphold the banner of the unification of the Kazan
The Wustkazan, the Kazan, the Estkazan probably would pay very much attention to his action from now on.
And then there is the young chief of the Brolgadhr. Aeryon the Son of Rakarys
Out of the three, this one is the most dangerous
Aeryon is the chief of Brolgadhr. Brolgadhr before him being the chief is nothing but a small tribe
Even though the tribe itself has long lineage and history, in the Great Steppe, lineage is not that important. What is important is strength
The one who have the largest fist, make the rules
That is how it has always been in the Great Steppe.
Rakarys died, and the Xewa and Ghar tribe wanted to carve the tribe and the young chief went to Nurshira. Halfway there, he returns back, stage a counterattack, destroy the Xewa and Ghar tribe with lightning method, swift and merciless
And before anyone could respond, the two tribes fell. And the Brolgadhr tribe was born from the ashes from that moment.
Since then, this young chief had gone into an expansionary conquest. But if one thinks that this young chief relies only on strength and force, then one has to look at the alliance that he had made
This alone shows that while this young chief is very adept at using force to subdue his opponent, he could also at times be diplomatic, exerting his influence without the use of force, or shedding of blood
First, he made an alliance with the Utgard tribe. The chief of the Utgard tribe Garron has always been known to be cunning and devious.
If not he would not get the nickname of Viper.
But that cunning and devious chief approve the young chief. If not, he would not have married his daughter to Aeryon.
This further sealed the alliance with the Utgard. If any of the chief in the Great Steppe could understand this strategic move, they would have probably predicted how Aeryon would expand.
But no one could have predicted it. Not because the chief of the Steppe is an idiot but because no one knows Aeryon
No one knows his ambition and because of that they could not have expected that Aeryon would not rets but instead, began a conquest campaign.
Only then the chief began to understand this young chief. This is not a chief that likes to rest on his laurels and he is not content to just make his tribe survive
This is an overlord in the making
If anyone knows the ambition that lies in the heart of this young man, they would have surely predicted that he would go westward.
Since then, he had conquered the tribe toward the west and even get the loyalty of someone like Durka. The lower west of the Southern Great Steppe is now included in Brolgadhr tribe sphere of influence
And now as a testament to that growing influence, Aeryon now order around ten thousand warriors to siege a city
And won
And what is the similarity of these four chiefs?
Ambition. Khagai might not expand like the other three tribes but it is not for lack of trying. Those who lives during the youth of Valgrun, the chief of Khagai noted that when he was young, he very much wanted to expand his tribe
But his position determine his fate. And so, he never could go east or north. Going to the south means he has to face Yan empire and one tribe could not rival the might of an entire empire
Going to the west means going against Western Zhou. They could raid but they could not take lands .
If Valgrun wanted to take the land of Western Zhou, he must have great strength and a lot of people. That is not something that he have. The Khagai tribe might have a lot of elite warriors, looking more like an army than arable gathering of warriors.
But if there is one thing they did not have, it is population.
But he surely have the ambition. And so, when these four chief gathers and break the city of Nurshira, returning to the Great Steppe with wealth and bounty never seen before, everyone also recognize one thing.
Those who follow Aeryon toward his expedition to the south are all people with great ambition. It is not like Aeryon did not ask other tribes to follow him. But only these three tribes that follows him.
This did not mean that they listen to Aeryon but they all have their own reason to want to attack Yan.
And with this victory, these four chiefs and the tribe they lead rose to prominence almost in an instant.
The intent to rule is starkly exposed.
And the chief of the Great Steppe look at these four people and wonder what they will do?
Dama on the east, this young chief would surely try to gobble up the other tribes and his ambition to become the overlord of the east is evident to everyone.
Karnain, the chief of the Sordkazan tribe, who would believe that he did not have ambition? The fact that his tribe now rose in fame would attract more small clans and tribes to follow him and he might have the ability to fight against the other splinters of the Kazan tribe and did what none of them could do.
Unify the Kazan tribe and become an overlord that rules one side of the Great Steppe.
Khagai tribe led by Valgrun, who knows what he would do? But there is rumours that Karnain seems to have forge an alliance with the chief of Brolgadhr tribe.
Could it be that Valgrun also wanted to throw his gauntlet into the ring? With the Brolgadhr tribe securing his rear, could Valgrun break the shackle of the other tribes around him and expand out toward the east or north?
One would wonder
And what about the young chief of the Brolgadhr. This young wolf had never stopped expanding since the moment he returns to the Great Steppe
His ambition is now clear to everyone.
Taking the west would not be enough for this man. Before, they might think that after a while this young wolf would stop. But now, the chiefs of the Southern Great Steppe knows the character of this person.
And they know his ambition.
This is not the first time the chief of the southern great steppe sees such a man. But no one has been as fast and swift as he is to quickly expand his tribe in such a lightning speed.
Before anyone could contain him or cut his tribe down to size, he swiftly takes the tribes around him before they could react.
And when he is big enough, his tribe is like a tall tree that now brings shade to the tribes under him and with it the other tribes is bound to serve under him
Now, his tribe is large and he has warriors in the thousands.
If he capitalise in his alliance, he could ask for more men. His tribe is large now and his ambition is probably larger than ever now
Now, there is a fire burning, and it is no longer an ember. The trend of unification is here. Who would stand above them all and rule the Southern Great Steppe? Who would emerge victorious? Who would lose and fall?
The curtain rises on the turning point of history
