Way of Overlord -
Chapter 181: Roaring
Chapter 181: Roaring
The Great Spear is a colossal and formidable siege weapon
It is unlike any other in the Yan empire arsenal.
Crafted with a single, massive log-shaped beam, its purpose is straightforward - to pierce through even the mightiest of warriors, especially those who possessed innate strength.
The design itself is ingenious. The spearhead is the Great Spear defining feature.
It has elongated arrowhead-like tip.
Forged from the toughest iron available, this wickedly sharp point was designed to puncture armor, flesh, and bone with ease.
Its edges gleamed menacingly in the sunlight and glows under the moonlight
The tension mechanism is not something that is so easily replicated even by Aeryon.
Aeryon has knowledge about siege weapons but he did not have detailed knowledge about it. If he wanted to create the same weapons, he needs someone else to build it for him
But Aeryon did research a bit about the Great Spear
At the rear of the Great Spear, a complex system of brackets and a colossal tension mechanism was anchored.
This mechanism was the source of the weapon incredible power.
The brackets held the ends of the wooden beam securely, and the tension mechanism, powered by tightly wound ropes, was the heart of the weapon.
And it is not only that
Positioned at the rear of the weapon was a system of counterweights.
These consisted of massive stones and sandbags, carefully calibrated to offset the force generated during the weapon’s activation.
This system ensured the Great Spear movements were controlled, regulating its speed and, ultimately, it’s devastating impact.
As for the usage, The Great Spear was designed specifically to target those individuals known for their innate strength, a rare characteristic.
It was created to disrupt the advantage held by these formidable opponents and turn the tide of battles.
And to deploy it is another problem
To unleash the fury of the Great Spear, the weapon required a coordinated effort.
The tension mechanism had to be engaged, and the ropes tightly wound for maximum force.
Large stones and sandbags in the counterweight system must be adjusted to balance the weapon.
The operation of the Great Spear is an art in itself.
Warriors, working in unison, must operate the massive winches, gradually tightening the ropes.
As they did so, the wooden shaft would be pulled back, winding itself up, storing potential energy like a coiled serpent ready to strike.
Once everything is ready, the ropes should be released simultaneously.
The potential energy accumulated in the wooden beam would be instantly transformed into kinetic energy, catapulting the weapon forward with astounding force.
As the Great Spear shot forward, it’s terrifying tip should and must be unerring in its aim. If it struck, it would strike with a force capable of shattering stone and wood, delivering a blow that could alter the course of battles.
The deployment of the Great Spear was both a tactical move and a psychological weapon. Any defenders who witnessed its terrifying approach often panicked; their morale shattered by its power.
Aeryon knew that this siege weapon was a game-changer, capable of disrupting the battlefield and ensuring a decisive advantage for the Yan soldiers.
Two such weapons were rumoured to be in the city of Nurshira
"Where is it? And why does this city does not use it?" he thought to himself
Aeryon unease deepened with every passing moment.
The intelligence had been clear - there were two Great Spears within the walls of Nurshira.
These formidable siege weapons were designed to change the tide of a battle and were especially lethal against warriors with innate strength.
Yet, as the battle raged and they had successfully breached the city, the absence of the Great Spears troubled Aeryon.
From his vantage point, the sprawling chaos of the battlefield is evident.
In the distance, Aeryon sharp eyes spotted Belarion, charging headlong into the heart of the battle.
Belarion appeared undeterred by the dangers he was venturing into, pushing forward with reckless abandon
"This is not good" he thought to himself as his face expression turns hard.
Aeryon couldn’t let Belarion continue his reckless advance without caution.
There is a growing risk of his friend, his sworn brother being surrounded on all sides, becoming an easy target for the city’s defenders.
Though Aeryon trusted Belarion strength and courage, he couldn’t ignore the pressing concerns that swirled in his mind.
And Belarion right now is not acting like a calm and collected Belarion that he knows. Yes, he is prone to excitement and his emotions is easily stirred, but when Belarion leads his men, his demeanour and temperament change.
This is the first time that Aeryon sees Belarion, looking this unhinged and fighting like a rushing bull.
Aeryon had to be cautious and strategic to ensure victory. And losing Belarion is not something that he wants. Top of Form
As Belarion kills forward, he doesn’t seem to listen to anyone words telling him to stop.
"He is not listening to anyone" there is frustration in Aeryon heart and then he kick the side of his horse
Neigh!
Aeryon heart raced as he urged his horse onward, pushing through the frenzied battlefield towards Belarion.
The concerned shouts of his soldiers and the urgency of his lieutenant’s message were background noise; his focus was solely on reaching Belarion.
As he neared Belarion position, the scene grew grimmer.
Despite the attempts of the defenders to stop him, he easily dispatched them with ease
"Shit’ he curses. in the distance, he could see that the city defenders has swarmed around Belarion.
The dust and chaos of battle seemed to thicken with each passing moment, making it increasingly difficult to see the situation clearly.
With each stride of his horse, Aeryon frustration and anxiety mounted.
He could feel the uncertainty of the situation, the looming threat of those hidden Great Spears, and the peril Belarion is facing
"He is too deep in his anger. He did not even realize he had travel that deep" Aeryon thought to himself as he swing his sword and another arrow was swipe to the side.
Even as he is trying to go toward Belarion, there is the city defender that tries to kill him
Time seemed to stretch as he closed the distance.
Aeryon knew he had to act swiftly.
The Great Spears had yet to reveal themselves, and the longer the battle went on, the higher the chances of their destructive intervention.
With a determined grip on his sword, Aeryon made his decision.
He would attempt to break through the encircling enemies, reach Belarion, and withdraw him from this vulnerable position.
The safety of his Belarion is paramount, and the battle within the city’s walls was far from over.
....
Mayeux, positioned on the other side of the battlefield, could sense the urgency in the air. He had a clear view of Belarion perilous situation and was eager to come to his aid.
Mayeux understood Belarion relentless spirit and knew that his friend would fight to the end.
However, he also recognized that only one person could intervene effectively at that moment, and that was Aeryon himself.
The young chief was not only Belarion commander but also his sworn brother, bound by a deep bond forged through countless journeys.
Aeryon had a unique ability to calm Belarion and, if anyone could save him from his berserk state, it was Aeryon.
Aeryon is on horseback and he look toward the distance. The dust rises up, and the battle is chaotic all over the city so he could not see Mayeux amidts the chaos.
But, Aeryon knows that there is Mayeux on the other side. He is also pushing with his soldiers.
But the battle around Mayeux side probably is not easy.
And Mayeux probably also could see that Belarion is now in a state of berserk. And he probably also wanted to come to Belarion aid
But he could not do it. Right now, there is only one person that could do it. And that is Aeryon himself.
Aeryon scanned the tumultuous battlefield. Among his four commanders, there was another who might be able to help.
Aeryon break the city with four commanders.
There is Aeryon. Mayeux. Belarion and Durka.
Durka, a veteran warrior with unparalleled combat experience, is a formidable ally.
But Aeryon couldn’t spot him amidst the chaos.
It is evident that Durka is likely engaged on another front of the city.
With a sense of urgency, Aeryon muttered to himself, "Durka..."
Probably like Mayeux he is also fighting fiercely against the defenders
"It is all up to me" he mutters to himself.
Amidst the tumultuous clash of battle, Aeryon heart sank as he observed Belarion
He become more and more erracti, more and more uncorntallble
But hisu strength also seems to have multiplied in his anger. When he swing his hand, gust of wind shot out just from his movement
When he kciks, booming sound breaks the chaos.
All in all, in his berserk state, Belarion strength seems to reach a never-before-seen level.
Trained men are like twigs that he could easily break with one touch
His sworn brother, the formidable warrior whose strength is only surpassed by his unwavering loyalty, is teetering on the edge of danger.
Yet, in the grip of his bloodlust, Belarion remained blissfully oblivious to the impending peril.
Aeryon, trapped in the midst of the conflict and unable to physically reach Belarion, knew he had no time to spare.
Aeryon could not move forward as he is also surrounded.
But he also could not stop. Because Belarion is going deeper and deeper, and his bloodlust seems to be at the peak
Aeryon furrowed his brow.
He took in a deep, steadying breath, filling his lungs with the acrid scent of battle.
With every ounce of his strength, he unleashed a primal roar that pierced through the cacophony of combat.
"Belarion! Wake up!"
His shout, more akin to a force of nature than a mere voice, echoed across the battlefield.
But even as the roar echoes all around, Belarion is like a crazy man, rushing forward, trails of blood around him, life and death separated by a thin line
