Chapter 296: I Had All, And Now... None of You [4]

"The... The King is here?" the Lycans asked, having not expected to see the man who ruled over them in this place. "The... The King is here?" the Lycans asked, having not expected to see the man who ruled over them on this side of the kingdom.

It was an insane sight, truly.

Sure, he went to war for them, he did whatever he had to, for them, but even that was never enough for them to dare to look at their king.

He looked angry, but this time it wasn’t because of the Lycans. This time, his justified anger was the only way they could relate to him.

It did help that they were together in their pain and that the king hadn’t pretended like they all weren’t hurt. This was the king they had seen in the old times, but then it seemed like grief and anger were once again depriving them of love.

"Maybe he found the people who did it," the bereaved Lycans dared to hope for justice as they looked at their king. This man may have been the worst of the worst, but they knew his vengeance was eternal.

But what use was vengeance when their women, including his woman, hadn’t been safe from the intruders? This right here was a kind of cruelty that surpassed even what anyone could have imagined.

King Zaffuto looked at them sadly. He knew that this was hard for them too, and he couldn’t blame them. Deep down, after seeing and hearing what had happened, he knew there was only one person who could have done this.

He wasn’t sure yet, but then in all his life the only magic that could count as Hinata magic was Hinata magic. It was knowledge known only by the people who knew that the king had a sister.

Perhaps that was too far a shit, but as he stood there, Zaffuto knew he had to be composed. And so, he was.

"Hello Kawai," King Zaffuto greeted, as he looked at the mass of Lycans who were staring at him skeptically.

"Tragedy has struck us in the worst of ways. We lost our mothers, women who meant the world to us, in the hands of people who have been with us, sitting with us, dining with us, and making merry with us.

"The people who attacked our home were not outsiders, but traitors who embedded themselves in our home. They learned our habits and pretended to smile with us when in reality, they were planning on taking away what we love the most. The mothers in our family.

"I know most of us, just like me, were expecting our mothers, wives, and sisters home. But betrayal brought us to this point. So, I won’t pretend to stand here and say that things will be okay. Nothing will be okay for a long while.

"My son, the Lycan prince was kidnapped today, something that seems to be the motive of all this. I will send warriors to your houses after this, and they will confirm if you are traitors to the people of Kawai or not.

"Whatever happened, shouldn’t have happened, and that too to the fragile mothers who were at their weakest. For that cruelty, if I find a traitor among you, I will burn you alive. I will give you the worst of punishments. This is a promise.

"I’m so sorry for your loss. May the queen and the fallen mothers and children’s souls rest in peace," King Zaffuto said, before he did a ninety-degree bow to his people, an indication that he wasn’t ever at war with the innocents.

He just wanted to root the evil in their home, the evil that had cost them much.

"All hail the king!!!"

"Long live the king!!"

"May the goddess protect our king!!"

That evening, King Zaffuto did the one thing that no one had expected. He conducted a mass funeral for the mothers. Sure, he had gone back into the palace and stayed in his chambers, but he had instructed the warriors to hold a mass funeral.

"Are you sure about this, Zaffuto?" Sadako had asked when his best friend had told him that all the mothers would be burnt in one place, and at the queen’s burial chamber. It was a strange thing, an unheard-of custom. If anything, it was the most humane a king could be.

But then again, King Zaffuto was in mourning and he was trying his very best to hold on. He couldn’t pretend to be strong in front of his people. Seeing his Lili burning would anger him and would definitely make him want to commit a few random murders.

And that wasn’t what he wanted. He wanted to respect his Erasthai and the people who had lost their families today. It was cruel what had happened, and they wouldn’t pretend that life was going to be better for them after that.

"Yes. Go be their enforcer. Go help them. They trust and love you; they know you brother. So go, be with them.

"I’ll be watching from the window here; besides, I can’t really be seen losing my shit over Lili out there. She wouldn’t like it," King Zaffuto said with a sad laugh, and Sadako knew he was right.

"If you need me—" Sadako began, knowing so well that his friend was at his worst and most fragile state. He didn’t expect Zaffuto to come crawling to him, but he wanted to make sure the king knew that he was not alone in this.

"I know. But for now, our people need someone who can relate to them, and I’m too heartbroken to be there with them, so go," King Zaffuto said and Sadako just nodded. He knew that this was a favor he was doing his friend, but what he hadn’t realized was that it wasn’t just for today.

And so, the great Lycan king watched as the Lycans mourned their fallen mothers. He watched in anger and pain as they burnt his wife and the others.

He watched his Lili go up in flames, something that Sadako had made sure to put in a manner that was invisible to him, from the palace.

The king felt lost, through the ceremony. He felt empty and, in his rage, he trashed the whole of the king’s wing, throwing things on the wide hallways, breaking stuff, and ruining everything that he could.

He was a wrecked mess and even that didn’t make him feel any better.

The Lycan king spent the next months breaking things, saying absolutely nothing to even his friend, Sadako. Instead, he would wake up, go break things, and hope to the goddess that Sadako found his son.

But Sadako never came back with any good information. Their warriors scoured the werewolf packs for any Lycan kids that had strayed, but none were found. It was almost like there was no clue that the kid even existed.

They could have argued that the queen had died with the kid in her belly, but then they had all seen the queen’s belly ripped open, so there was just no way for them to pretend that it didn’t happen.

The Lycan king’s son was somewhere in the realm, whether near Kawai or within Kawai. But he was somewhere around them, and he had a determined uncle who was out to find him despite the many years that had passed.

***

In Grealor, the lost heir had found a home, one that would break him with everything, a life that would bring forth so many things that to this day they still didn’t know how to deal with. Perhaps that was the bout of fate that had gotten them like that, right?

Or was it because Zula and the Furfantes had no regrets for what they had done? Well, clearly, they didn’t, because years later, Zula was still proudly plotting the dirt against his brother only that this time, it was against the kid they had stolen.

Perhaps the greed for more fates was the only thing that Zula Hinata knew, but then what was she supposed to do when she had seen her brother happier than she had ever been bad with shit that she would never truly have?

Maybe it was a crazy time for Zula and the Furfantes. But perhaps it was the confidence of pulling a cruel fate that got them planning what to do against Tamiko, in the kid’s new life. But would it all ever be worth it?
