Chapter 272: The Monster That Horrified Monsters [6]
[ZULA]
As Liana made her way out of the place, she could feel the eyes on her. Some were filled with pity, while others thought that the bond with the king was the most useless of the bonds, seeing as the king never changed for her.
She was just another woman in his life, another person he didn’t give a shit about. It was a truth that should have terrified Liana, but she was a determined woman. She would prove to them that the madman could be better.
Perhaps It was a challenge that she wanted to explore. Or maybe, just maybe, deep down she wanted to bring out the good in him. To help him understand that it’s okay to feel and care.
Perhaps she just wanted to let him know that no matter what he had to do out there, he didn’t have to be alone. It was tempting, truly but she was going to make certain that she had what it took to bring the man closer to humanity.
Their people needed a king, and if she was not capable of making him change for her, then she would try and explain what life was to him, so he would know that despite everything, he was never alone.
"Your majesty, you are not allowed to leave," one of the high guards said when the queen left the palace.
She was not addressed in warrior regalia and as seductive as she was right now, the guards knew this was never going to work on their king, the man only ever interacted with Lord Sadako.
Anyone would have thought that the Lycan Lord was his Erasthai, but then time and fate had proven them otherwise. Even then, they still knew that nothing would ever make the mad king change what he was doing.
He was crazy and he was nasty. No one deserved to be forced to be with a man like him anyway. And the guards knew that if they let her leave, they would be in trouble. Was she worth it?
"I am the queen, aren’t I? Do you want to question my authority?" Liana asked softly, her tone betraying the authority on her vice. She could order them into a fire and they would do it because she was the one that made man of the realm had chosen.
It wasn’t like there was much of an argument there because, at the end of the day, this was going to be about the realm’s greatest misfits. It was scary why they had to hope for it.
However, right now as Liana looked like a goddess on her way out, it was only rational that other warriors tried to stop her. They had to because otherwise, the king would assume they enabled her tendencies which was way worse than being caught plotting against the mad king.
"But—" the high guard began as he stared at the queen. This woman terrified him to the core. She was undoubtedly the only woman who was willing to put up with the mad king and that in itself was a thousand shades of crazy.
No one had ever been that wild and the warrior hoped that this wouldn’t be his last day because he had families to feed. There was always someone relating to a high guard and Liana knew that too.
Perhaps that was why she stared at him softly; her eyes comforted him as if that were supposed to make her apparent disappearance any better. She was unhinged like her husband and this was a hellish fate that she was about to decide for the high guard.
"I will be back to tell the guards to keep manning their stations. There won’t be any incidents tonight," Liana reassured the skeptical warrior.
She could see the raw fear in his eyes and as much as she wanted to say that he looked better like that, she had to remind herself that this was a den of beasts.
She had to remind herself that the mad king was crazy on so many scales and that he would probably make lives worse than Liana was thinking at the moment. It was an appalling sight for Liana but she had to wait it out.
She had to think for herself and she had to try and embrace what her truth was at the moment.
"What if—" the guard began but she interrupted him understandingly.
"I will be back before he comes back. No worries. Now leave before I command you into doing something you don’t want to," Liana warned and the warrior sighed. This was not even as comforting as Liana thought it was.
The woman was condemning them to a fate worse than death. The fact that she was leaving and planning to come back before he came home was just crazy on its own. Where the fuck was she even headed?
It was a question that the high guards had but none of them had the guts to question her. She was not just any Lycan. She was their queen and if they questioned her and she got any angrier, there was a chance they would lose their lives.
That was what insanity looked like for them and all hell would be damned for them at the moment. Oh, how the universe was a shitty place to be right now.
"My apologies, your majesty," the warrior apologized defeatedly. There was clearly nothing that he could do to convince the mad woman and all they had to do was hope that the realm would still be in one piece by the time she came back.
She was mated to the devil and she knew that. Perhaps she would be able to think rightly for the sake of the people she had been handed the responsibility of, right? But what if Liana turned out to be working against King Zaffuto?
What if she had more in mind; the woman who was encouraging the terrible tendencies? What if she was so bad that even the king had to step back and try to patch her with reality?
What would the fates say to that then? Would it ever be alright or was this just a pipe dream that no one would ever understand? Oh, how Kawai had gotten crazier, but maybe there was always a time to hope.
After all, it was the only thing that the warriors were left to do at the moment.
"You’ll all be fine. I know you don’t know me or even whether you can trust me. But I need you to trust me on this one. I will be back and none of you will lose anything tonight or tomorrow.
"Your families will be fine, so don’t think too much of what is happening now," Liana said to the high guards who had come around her, as she patted one of the high guards’ shoulders gently.
It was reassuring and tempting for them to hold onto. But deep down they all couldn’t help but pray that the moon goddess hadn’t gotten them from the frying pan and thrust them into a fire whose end no one would ever be able to tell apart.
With a smile on her face, Liana walked past other groups of warriors. She knew they were supposed to guard her, but what was the point when she was as difficult as her husband?
"Be careful," she said to them one last time, as she made her way out of the final borders and into the fire lands. This would be the craziest shit she had done in her life, but she had no regrets for it all whatsoever.
