Chapter 254: My Tears Did Ricochet

[KAWAI]

His words were poison and he knew it.

The warnings they held were dangerous and they could consume anyone who crossed him, whether friend or foe. The reminder was out there for everyone to make reference to, and Tamiko didn’t care anymore.

If Kosta was okay, he was okay.

If Kosta was happy, he was happy.

If Kosta was alive, he would live.

The dynamics of his bond were at their peak and he refused to be bested by anyone again. The nightmares of what had been done to him in Grealor threatened to resurface as he stared at the entirety of Kawai.

They threatened to make him a monster, and while that had been a success, Tamiko hadn’t intended to be as harsh. Looking at them, he knew one of these people had been a traitor who had led to the death of his mother.

His rage for his mother’s death had always been covered by the pain of being abandoned. He had been lost and had suffered one too many times at the hands of the Grealors.

He had never thought of what had happened to his mother, but as he stood there, Tamiko hated the possibility that one of the people seated here was the reason he had never gotten to see the kindest queen the realm had ever known.

He would forever be left speculating about what his mother would have been. He would forever yearn for the king of love only others could give and she would never get it because his mother was gone and someone they knew had played a part in it.

Maybe he was not mad at the fates, because even the highborn Furfantes had to have gotten help from the other lowly Lycans. It wasn’t rocket science and fuck was it scary for Tamiko.

It made him want to growl so hard and his father noticed the change the moment it happened.

King Zaffuto saw how his son shifted from being the protective Erasthai to being the angry son who had lost his mother because of a few traitors.

It was something the king hadn’t expected and on any other day he would have been glad for this, today all he could do was hope that his son didn’t hurt as badly. Funny how hopeful he was when he was still hurting because of the loss that had paralyzed him.

Maybe there would come a day when they sat and talked about what had happened like it was okay and normal, right?

"We are all citizens of Kawai and we are at war with the other factions. Vengeance will be gotten for the mothers that die beside my mother in the worst attack of Kawai. Everyone. Will. Fight.

"Only children under thirteen will not step into the battlefield. Everyone else will find their way there, without fail. We do this, not just because I am the prince, but because we all agree that our mothers deserve better.

"Your sisters deserved better than to be mauled and torn apart by a people who had no regard for life. They were cowards and came to attack home when our women were at their weakest, but we won’t wait for them to be weak to attack them.

"We won’t wait for their children and mothers to be young so we can attack. We won’t wait for them to have issues for us to attack. We will attack them, on any day we see fit because that is what I came for. Vengeance.

"If you don’t like it, you can hide, but be sure to hide for the rest of your eternal life. And good luck, hiding from me," Tamiko said and there were gasps from the new council members and even the king himself.

He had known his son was never going to get over that pain, but the open declaration was the last straw for Tamiko. Zaffuto could see his son’s pain first-hand and it was wrecking him.

He was fighting to hold back the urge to go into Grealor and tear that pack piece by piece. It was a tempting thing but he had to wait. He had to wait for his son. He had to walk after Tamiko.

He had to follow his son’s lead because only then would this feel good.

What else was there when they had lost everything that had ever meant something? They had been broken by the people in their lives and now they had to find a way to move on without letting themselves get consumed.

Then again, that was just wishful thinking.

It was the craziest time of the day and Tamiko hated every bit of it. King Zaffuto? He was ready to go to war on his own. It didn’t matter how things got because there wasn’t much they could hold onto at this moment.

"That is all from me, papa," Tamiko said, snapping his father out of the stream of thoughts that had threatened to take him out. The king was not in the right mind, but he knew it because he was still hurting too.

He wondered if his son always felt like his head was about to explode like he did all the time. He wondered if his son was suffering like he was. He wondered if ever there would come a day when they would have to cry their hearts out at every moment.

It was a reality that the king had thought through more than once and he had never really gotten a way around it. But then here with the Lycans of Kawai staring at them, they couldn’t crash out.

They couldn’t get to that point right now, which was why King Zaffuto smiled at his son and walked over to him. This was not how he had wished for the day to be like for them.

However, it was a reality that the king had known he would have to face one way or the other.

"You did well, Kaito. You did so well. My Lily would have been so proud of you, my little angel," King Zaffuto said before he pulled his son into a hug. He was aware that this was not an easy time for Tamiko and he would have prepared himself for this.

He should have prepared his son for how heavy the conversation could have gotten, but he had been so determined to let everyone know not to mess with his people that he had almost missed it.

It broke Zaffuto’s boundless heart and it made him owner for a moment if he was a good father. Perhaps this was not the place to be thinking about all of that, right? Maybe they had to wait it out but fuck the deities for making life too hard for the Hinatas.

"I tried, papa. Thank you," Tamiko said in earnest and the king knew he meant it.

"You’re never going to be alone again. Never, my son. Whatever you want, just name it and I will give it to you," King Zaffuto said.

Tamiko smiled sadly at his father. He could feel the way that the man was trying to hold himself, and he knew that they all had their work cut out for them. Hopefully, it wouldn’t be as bad, right?

Pulling back from the hug, Zaffuto let his son walk back to his seat before turning to the new council members.
