Chapter 214: It Burned So Very Brightly
[KOSTA]
"It is alright, you know," Akila began and Igor stared at him curiously. He seemed to have a lot to say to Akila but his words were stuck in his throat. Yesterday was honestly a lot and Igor hadn’t quite processed the occurrences just yet.
He was fading as though it was supposed to make him feel any better but at the same time, it was making him feel like shit.
Maybe it was because he hadn’t yet accepted what had happened and he was turning his very best of act like he didn’t care one bit about the evening that had become his heart into greater voices.
That evening had fucked his sanity and he wasn’t about to deny it, but damn was Konstantin unsure of whether he could ever think of talking about that evening. He wasn’t ready, just not yet, and now his sidekick was opening a wound he wasn’t used to yet.
Perhaps this was the motivation he needed to make it happen, right?
"We all knew long before the announcement," Akila added and that got Igor’s attention. They may have been unwavering words, words that didn’t mean a lot at the moment, but to Konstantin, they were the words that sparked an interest in the life around him.
He had been waiting absentmindedly, wondering what the days that would come would be like for him, he was desperate for further, but as he worked through the bounties, he hadn’t been sure if he was ready to face any aspect of life he had run away from.
It wasn’t supposed to be hard, and it had proved a tad too challenging for him. This was not how shit was meant to hold onto him, and his subconscious was eating at him constantly. Life was truly a bitch and he couldn’t even fight back.
Fuck.
"What?" Igor responded, unsure of what he was supposed to say to that. He had been careful with all that he did. He had tried to be better than what was possible and yet it seemed like all of that wasn’t going to be as easy for him.
The masks he had worn for over six hundred years had been slowly seeping and revealing that which he had tried to hide. And now with his sidekick talking around him like that, he wasn’t sure if this was another response he had to premeditate.
It was crazy because Akila was someone that Igor treasured. He was someone that Igor wanted to be with for a long time, even as friends. They had the kind of bond that only brothers could never define.
Akila was to Igor what Danny was to Tamiko and what Lord Sadako was to the craziest King of all time.
They had a special bond and hoped that they wouldn’t have to ruin that today. That would honestly be a lot for Igor and the conductor to see himself lose yet another person just because he’s had been fortunate enough to be neon an omega.
"The caramel scent was always faint, and we always had assumptions about it. When we finally figured it out, we didn’t have much to say because you were always protecting us, always looking out for us.
"We were the brothers who swore our lives to each other and that never once changed. And it won’t change, just because you were outed yesterday," Akila spoke in complete earnest.
He didn’t even look bothered by the fact that their team leader was a mere omega, a fault in the hierarchy that had always been preserved. There was a brotherhood that had lived through endless lifetimes and a pen that had reigned over and over.
Perhaps it was that easy for Akila, but for Igor, this was a battle that he needed to make peace with. It was something that scared the shit out of him because no one had ever told him that it would be this hard to accept.
It was a cruel fate, a fate that no one had ever prepared them for. Perhaps it was why he didn’t think too much about it because, at the end of the day, the only thing that would ever matter was the end that had been suspended.
Maybe life was not to be that cruel but why did it seem like the craziest of things that he had ever had to embrace in the morning of fates?
"How? I was careful..." Igor’s voice softly, his voice low, like denial was once again seeping in. He had been careful there was no doubt about that. He had done things that he never thought would ever have to do.
He had endured the kind of things that one would never have had to endure if they accepted themselves.
–But Igor had never once accepted himself.
It was a battle that he had tried to keep sane within. It was something that had kept him running in circles over and over, yet right now, hearing this from his sidekick, made him wonder if this was the end of the brotherhood.
Would Akila try to make a move at him? Would Akila undo the masking scent he had used to cover his omegan scent? Would it ever be better for him as this t single face that he had to embrace and be ready to deal with regardless of how shit ended for them?
"Well, six hundred years on the road with you, we were bound to pick up even the slightest of things, whenever you went to the brothels, you never stayed more than five minutes.
"You were always in your world and at the same time, planning the next bounty," Akila responded in earnest as if the routine had been the greatest giveaway of what the Lycan chef had been.
Perhaps it was that, or maybe there was more and Akila couldn’t bear to see the pain on the Lycan Chief’s face if he spoke of them. Maybe that was why he chose the simplest of them all while letting the Lycan Chief be the one to think for himself about what had forced him out in the open like that.
It wasn’t easy for the man and Akila wasn’t looking to terrorize the Chief even more. They were still friends and it was that easy.
"Were you uncomfortable?" Igor asked, the silent desperation in his voice a little louder than he had to defend it.
He wondered about so many things since the day that had gotten him out of home, but now, he wasn’t sure if there was much that he could do to preserve whatever was left of his dignity.
Maybe that was why he had chosen to melt the world and decide his fate. It was dangerous, what he was doing, because no matter how hectic shit got for him, there was never going to be a way out for him.
He had to walk through the chaos, he had to swiftly think the shit and figure out what part of life he wanted to find himself in. It was not too hard, right?
"No. We never were. Honestly, nothing changed even after we figured out what you were and who you really were. It didn’t matter to us because you always treated us as a family. You are the first person who looked at us like we were people.
"We were all mere rogues whose lives meant nothing to King Zaffuto and yet you turned us into Lycans who were respected by the crown and the entirety of Kawai. That was something no one would have done for us.
"You honestly have always been the best leader we ever had," Akila praised proudly like he wouldn’t have had any of this any other way. He couldn’t be blamed for being that excited though.
Igor had changed their lives significantly. He had done the impossible to ensure his head was settled. He had changed so much more than when he was given the role of the Lycan chief hundreds of years ago.
There wasn’t much that the barbarians who worked with him would have wished to happen. The man had made it all make sense with so much ease that it was crazy, but then where love lived, pain would always find a way to bounce off.
There was just not enough there. Funny how they had gotten to this point with each other. It wasn’t supposed to be hard, oh but it wasn’t. But life had it just happen, no?
"But that might change, Akila. So much is happening right now. I don’t know where I stand with the prince. I don’t even know if he wants me to be a part of his life. He just got his father back, and I am happy for him, truly.
"But I am also angry that shit happened the way it happened. When I went for my Erasthai in Grealor, I swore to always protect him, and I always will. But how am I supposed to do that when I am someone that he might never look at the same way?
"How, when all he might be seeing each time is a fragile man that needs his protection?" Igor asked frustratedly as he kicked the nearest stone. He had been struggling with all the realities from the evening before and now it was like they were not letting him have a pace.
This wasn’t what love was supposed to be, and yet he had been forced into this corner because he had dared to believe in the impossible. He had tried to live through the horrors of a life that would make sense.
Perhaps it was his turn to make a run for it, but would it be any better for him then?
"Did he ever tell you that?" Akila asked.
