Chapter 301: Who bullied you?

Chapter 301: Who bullied you?

The twins, Lian and Mei, clung to him as if their lives depended on it. Lian’s arms were wrapped tightly around his neck, nearly choking him, while Mei latched onto his thigh, her grip unyielding. Their wails echoed through the hall, a symphony of desperation and relief.

Xiang Yu’s eyes scanned the passageway, noticing the curious glances from the staff. His voice, deep and authoritative, cut through the air. "Have you seen enough?" he demanded, his tone leaving no room for argument. The staff who where in disbelief when they saw the twins’ antics, scattered like leaves in the wind.

They knew all too well the twins’ reputation for causing a stir, especially when it came to the crown prince. The blogs and gossip columns were filled with stories of how the twins had publicly snubbed Xiang Yu, ignoring his attempts to engage with them at various high-profile events. And if the event was hosted by the crown prince they didnt even bother showing their faces yet here they were, clinging to him as if he were their lifeline.

The steward, on the other end, couldn’t help but feel a swell of pride. He imagined the look on the faces of those who had mocked Xiang Yu when they saw this scene. With a satisfied nod, he walked away briskly, leaving the three of them alone.

"You can let go now," Xiang Yu said gently, a warm smile spreading across his face. Lian and Mei released their grips, stepping back slightly but still close enough to touch. Mei’s eyes were wide with concern. "Master, we were so worried about you. We wanted to find you."

Lian nodded vigorously. "Yeah, we would have come sooner, but there was an mum... incident." By incident, she meant the fierce sparring match in their home training arena that had left them both injured and subsequently grounded.

Xiang Yu’s sharp eyes didn’t miss the signs of their recent injuries. He examined them closely, his expression shifting to one of fatherly concern. "Who did this to you? Tell me who bullied you," he demanded, his voice softening.

The twins pointed at each other simultaneously, their voices overlapping. "She did it!" Mei accused. "She dislocated my jaw."

Lian countered, "She broke my legs. Look, Master!"

Xiang Yu sighed, rubbing his forehead as the twins began to bicker. "You started it," Mei insisted. "You hit too hard."

Lian defended herself, "Nuh-uh, you hit hard first. Master, she bullied me."

Seeing no end to their argument, Xiang Yu decided to employ his tried-and-true method of diffusing the situation. "Would you like to eat something?" he asked, his tone light.

The mention of food had an immediate effect. The twins’ eyes lit up, their quarrel forgotten. "Of course, Master! We would love to eat something yummy," they chorused, their faces bright with anticipation.

A few minutes later Xiang Yu was sitting in the serene garden of his palace, the sprawling imperial capital stretching out below them. The air was crisp, carrying the faint scent of blooming flowers. Beside him, Mei and Lian were engrossed in their caramel cake, devouring it with an intensity that spoke of long deprivation.

Since their arrival in this world, they had been subjected to nutritional packs that tasted like sawdust with a metallic aftertaste. Their grandfather had insisted these packs contained all the nutrients alphas needed, dismissing the need for anything else.

Lian’s eyes welled up with tears as she savoured each bite. The cake’s texture was smooth and velvety, with a slightly glossy finish that made each mouthful melt like a cloud of caramel heaven. Mei, equally entranced by the taste, found herself unable to think straight. "Master, can we stay here with you?" she asked, her voice filled with longing.

Xiang Yu took a sip of his tea, the warmth spreading through him as he placed the cup down. "Don’t you want to experience how it feels to stay with a family that cares about you? You have a mum again and a grandpa who loves you."

Lian shook her head, her voice firm. "We already have a family."

Mei nodded in agreement. "Yeah, we have you, Brother Xin, Brother Zhan, and Brother Bai."

Xiang Yu smiled, his eyes softening. "Yes, but it doesn’t hurt to have even more family, don’t you think?"

Mei was about to reply when a familiar figure approached them. Lian’s jaw tightened, and Mei’s fists clenched as they glared at the intruder. Xiang Yu turned to see who had captured their attention, his expression turning cold as he recognized Peng Xiu. She had a knack for appearing at the most inconvenient times, just when he had almost forgotten she existed.

She glided across the garden, her cream dress with gold embroidery shimmering in the sunlight. Her hair was styled elegantly, and her demeanour was graceful and charming enough to fool those who didn’t know her true nature. She approached with a practised smile, her eyes glinting with hidden intentions. "Brother, I didn’t expect you had guests," she said, her voice smooth and sweet.

Peng Xiu’s visit was far from coincidental. She had intended to remind Xiang Yu of their agreement, but upon hearing that the Wu twins were visiting, she couldn’t resist the opportunity to assert her presence. The entire Republic had watched the twins make a fool of Xiang Yu, and Peng Xiu had played her part, paying bloggers and content creators to mock her brother and turn him into a laughingstock. This unexpected development, however, was something she hadn’t anticipated.

Xiang Yu’s voice was cold and unyielding. "Get lost."

Peng Xiu’s expression shifted to one of feigned hurt. She lowered her head, her voice soft and apologetic. "I apologize for my brother’s rudeness. He isn’t normally like this."

Lian, feeling safe for the first time with Xiang Yu by her side, spoke up. "You heard him. He said get lost."

Peng Xiu’s smile froze, her confusion evident. This was an unexpected turn of events. Mei, still a little scared of Peng Xiu, remained silent but glared at her with fierce determination.

Peng Xiu’s anger simmered beneath the surface, but she knew better than to show it in front of Wu Lian and Wu Mei. She forced a tight smile and said, "I truly apologize for disturbing you."
