Chapter 281: Eternal Mirror of Torment

Chapter 281: Eternal Mirror of Torment

The Divine Emperor stood at the precipice of the underworld, his thoughts a mess. He was contemplating returning to the divine realm and finding out what happened that had shaken his core but he also needed to find that demon’s soul and question it.

Just as he decided to return to divine realm, three shadowy figures materialised before him, their forms like black wisps of smoke, embodying the relentless and mysterious nature of the underworld.

These dark figures, known as the Veiled Furies, exuded an aura of dread and mystique. Their presence commanded both respect and fear, for they were the enforcers of the Lord of the underworld’s will. When they spoke, their voices merged into an eerie echo that sent shivers down the spines of even the bravest souls. Yet, the Divine Emperor seemed more irritated than fearful.

"Your majesty, he is not here," the Veiled Furies intoned, their voices reverberating through the air like a haunting melody.

The Divine Emperor sneered, his eyes narrowing with disdain. "How could that demon not be here? After every crime he committed, he doesn’t have the right to go through reincarnation."

The Veiled Furies’ response was calm, almost indifferent. "Have you tried asking his successor where he put his father’s soul?"

The Divine Emperor’s eyes widened in surprise. He had not considered that Xiang Yu might have kept his father’s soul. What could he possibly want with it?

"Can we help His Majesty with anything else?" the Veiled Furies asked, their voices chilling in harmony.

"No," the Divine Emperor replied curtly. With that, the Veiled Furies vanished, their forms dissipating into the shadows from whence they came.

The Divine Emperor’s figure disappeared from the underworld, reappearing in Xiang Yu’s palace. The palace was a gloomy and black oriental structure, its architecture a testament to the dark power that resided within. He had stopped time in this world, and the servants in the palace were frozen in place as though trapped in an ice cap.

In his mind, the Divine Emperor called out to Xiang Yu. The young successor was in the trenches, sitting on a chair and chatting with Old Song. Xiang Yu’s demeanour was relaxed, a stark contrast to the tension in the Divine Emperor’s voice.

"I will go get some fresh air outside," Xiang Yu said to Old Song, rising from his seat.

Old Song nodded, his eyes twinkling with a knowing smile. "Go to the rooftop. The view is quite nice." Xiang Yu nodded before heading up the dim stairway.

As he made his way to the rooftop he responded to the Divine Emperor. "You finally show up," he replied inwardly, his tone steady. "How may I help you?"

The Divine Emperor’s essence flickered with unease. He had a nagging suspicion about Xiang Yu’s recent activities, but he dismissed it. Time was short, and there was a more pressing matter at hand. "Where is your father’s soul?" he demanded, his voice that of authority.

Xiang Yu’s brows furrowed, curiosity mingling with irritation. "Why are you asking?" he asked as his expression shifted.

"I sense someone is helping Peng Xiu," the Divine Emperor explained, urgency lacing his words. "It ties back to your father. Remember, he chose your mother for a reason. After she gave birth to the two of you, he took only her, and then she cultivated speedily before ascending to the divine realm. A grand scheme must have been in motion. I need to speak to that demon’s soul."

Xiang Yu opened the metal door leading to the rooftop. A soft breeze from the sea brushed against his face, carrying the salty scent of the ocean. He slid his hands into his pockets, his demeanour cool yet guarded. "If you want to ask him anything, you can find him in my study. I dragged him out of the underworld myself and sealed him in the Eternal Mirror of Torment."

This mirror was an ancient relic, black and glistening, framed with twisted vines that seemed to writhe in their own darkness. When a soul was captured within its surface it relived the souls darkest deeds for thousands of years. Xiang went through hell to obtain that mirror almost losing half his life. But it was worth it. Whenever he was in a bad mood, he would watch his father suffer a hundredfold the pain he inflicted on others.

"The mirror is there," he said, his tone flat. "You can speak to him, but I doubt you’ll get anything out of him."

The Divine Emperor was taken aback. He had always known Xiang Yu detested his father, but this level of hatred was unexpected. The thought of Xiang Yu’s father not being in the underworld puzzled him. The deep pits of hell were notorious for their torment andnothing could be worse than that he thought. But he was wrong. This mirror was way worse and it would tear one’s soul to shreds.

With a wave of his hand, the Divine Emperor materialised before the Eternal Mirror of Torment. As he looked within, a fragile, trembling soul came into view. The figure quivered like a leaf in a storm, beaten and broken by the relentless cycle of its own past.

Xiang Yu stood at the edge of the rooftop, the wind tousling his hair like a restless spirit. In his mind, he said, "If there is nothing else, I have to go."

Suddenly, the Divine Emperor’s voice pierced through his mind. "Wait. Did something happen between you and Han Xin?"

A smile crept across Xiang Yu’s face, but he remained silent. The Divine Emperor pressed on, urgency creeping into his tone. "You might as well tell me because I will soon find out."

Xiang Yu’s resolve hardened. "Then I won’t spoil anything."

The Divine Emperor’s eyes widened in disbelief. "Xiang Yu!" he called again, but Xiang Yu chose not to answer. The Emperor’s voice echoed in his mind, a broken record of frustration, just as Han Xin appeared on the rooftop.

"What are you doing up here?" Han Xin asked a playful glint in his eyes. He wrapped his arms around Xiang Yu’s waist, pulling him closer.

Xiang Yu responded instinctively, wrapping his arms around Han Xin’s neck. "I just needed some fresh air."
