Han Xin stared at his father who lay on the bed, glaring up at him his eyes puffy and red. His mouth was foaming with anger wishing he could spring up and kill this heartless bastard.

He wished he had strangle him when he was born but that woman had hidden the child from him. Now it was already too late. His body lay there paralysed, unable to move. He was like a prisoner in his own skin.

"You will lie here for the rest of your miserable life," Han Xin said, his voice cold and unyielding. "Your bones will be broken, and just before they heal... they will be broken again and again and again. Don’t worry, I have a professional for that. He will keep alive until I am satisfied."

Han Jing’s eyes trembled with fear and rage. "You can’t do this to me! My wife won’t let this happen to me! She will tell the world what you did," he yelled, his voice cracking.

Han Xin chuckled, a sound devoid of warmth, the smile not reaching his eyes. "Your wife? Ah, I forgot to tell you... I gave that woman a choice to stay here with you or take a million and leave the country with her son. Do you know what she chose?"

Han Jing gritted his teeth, the blood vessels in his eyes nearly bursting with the effort. "You are lying," he spat.

"Am I?" Han Xin said, pulling out a document on his phone before showing him. "Here see.... she just signed away her medical spousal rights. From now on father... your health is in my hands. I don’t want to hear you call me unfilial again. I am a great son unlike your favourite who chose the money and left you here to rot."

Han Jing’s world shattered. He couldn’t believe it. His wife had left him here under this vile son’s control. He was truly delusional. Despite everything he had done to her he still couldn’t fathom that she would actually leave him. He cheated on her throughout their marriage, had multiple children outside and to add the cherry on top he had secretly arranged a hysterectomy for her so she wouldn’t be able to have more children. He had thought she would never find out, that she would continue to believe she had failed him and their family by not being able to carry more children.

Seeing the disbelief and despair on his father’s face, Han Xin smirked slyly. "Oh, she now knows," he said, his voice dripping with satisfaction. "She knows you went behind her back and took away her right to bear more children. She knows you made the doctor make her feel ill to better explain why she couldn’t have kids."

Han Jing looked away, his eyes vacant, lost in the enormity of his betrayal.

"Don’t worry about it," Han Xin said, taking another drag of his cigarette. "She is better off without you." He put out the cigarette on the plaster in his father’s leg before turning to leave.

His footsteps echoed in the silent room like the last echoes of hope for Han Jing. Just as Han Xin reached the door, his voice, weak but desperate, stopped him. "Just... just kill me," Han Jing pleaded, his voice breaking.

Han Xin stared at the ground, lost in thought, before slowly turning around. "No," he said, his voice firm. "I won’t. For my mother, my uncle and aunt, and my father-in-law. For everyone, you caused pain and suffering. Death would be too easy for you, too easy..." He paused, letting the weight of his words sink in. "And by the way, the pain medicine will wear off in thirty minutes. From now on, you will feel the pain until your death."

Han Xin turned again, ignoring the screams of his father as he closed the door behind him. The room was soundproofed. This meant that Han Jing could scream all he wanted, but no one would hear him. No one would come save him.

Outside, Han Xin found Old Song sitting at a desk, his fingers tangled in his hair as he scribbled notes. "I will leave him to you," Han Xin said.

Old Song leaned back, a grim smile on his face. "Don’t worry, I will make him feel so much pain he will beg for death."

Han Xin nodded and took a step to leave, then halted. "You and Xiang Shu..." he began.

Old Song smiled slightly, a rare softness in his eyes. "He was my boyfriend."

Han Xin had intended to ask if Xiang Shu would approve of his relationship with Xiang Yu, but Old Song’s revelation caught him off guard. "Does Yu Yu know?" he asked.

Old Song shook his head. "That’s why I treat him like my son. So don’t... don’t break his heart. Otherwise, you will join that monster in there."

Han Xin smiled, his sincerity evident. "I will protect him with my life."

Old Song seemed satisfied. Just as Han Xin was leaving, Old Song added, "Oh, and please please do not let him anywhere near a haulage truck. The entire bumper is hanging by a thread."

Han Xin chuckled. "I will try."

Old Song knew that no one could control Xiang Yu, so he casually waved his hand. "Go go, before he gets into trouble again."

Han Xin walked out, still finding the situation amusing, a small smile playing on his lips.

Xiang Yu sat in his office, the soft hum of the air conditioner blending with the quiet scribbles of the girls drawing on their tablets at a small table nearby. He didn’t have to come to the tattoo parlour today, but with Han Xin busy, he decided to work and pick up the girls, who had begged to go to school, while he was at it.

In the background, the television blared breaking news that the Die clan leader’s wife and her sons had been arrested for trafficking.

The day Han Jing was dethroned, the clan leaders voted Han Xin as the new Dragon Head. They also declared the Die clan as dead weight that needed to be cut off. The Die clan was completely severed from the triads, and Han Xin had handed them over to the Bureau of Organised Crime. Chief Xi was currently on the screen, holding a press conference and being commended for his efforts.
