Chapter 247: Finally getting rid of the vixen

Agent Lu paced back and forth the phone pressed tightly against his ear. Each unanswered ring heightened his anxiety. He bit his fingernails his mind veering in an unexpected direction. He wanted to know why she wasn’t answering her phone. He couldn’t help but imagine her pressed against the desk by that evil tyrant. Just that thought alone intensified his urge to go and find her.

Finally, after what felt like an eternity, the call connected. He had already called no less than ten times and she had finally answered.

Peng Xiu’s voice crackled through the line, laced with irritation. "What is it? I have things to do," she snapped, exhaling a cloud of smoke and running her fingers through her hair. She was in the middle of preparing for an important meeting and had no time for his antics.

Agent Lu took a deep breath, his eyes darting to his colleagues passing by. He waited until they were out of earshot before speaking. "Xiang Yu got arrested," he said, his voice barely above a whisper.

A smirk tugged at Peng Xiu’s lips, a sense of satisfaction washing over her. She had finally managed to rid herself of the man who had been a thorn in her side. She had finally got that vixen away from Han Xin’s side. Her plan to make Xiang Yu suffer was unfolding perfectly. She had orchestrated his downfall meticulously, ensuring that the evidence couldn’t be traced back to her. Either Xiang Yu would rot in prison, or he would meet his end outside its walls.

But her triumph was short-lived. Agent Lu’s next words wiped the smile off her face. "You called the media, didn’t you?"

Silence hung heavy between them. Peng Xiu’s mind raced, calculating her next move. Agent Lu sighed, breaking the tension. "The chief is furious. He is worried someone might attack the bureau to get to Xiang Yu."

"Ah-Xiu, are you listening?" he pressed, his tone urgent.

"Yes... yes, I am listening," Peng Xiu replied, her voice softer but with a dangerous edge. "Are you going to rat me out? You know Xiang Yu is too dangerous to be left on the streets. I did the right thing."

Agent Lu ruffled his hair, his frustration evident. "No, I won’t rat you out. I was just worried about you. Can I come to see you?"

Peng Xiu had always known about Agent Lu’s feelings for her. He was a lovestruck fool, willing to do anything to please her, despite her cold treatment. She hadn’t expected him to figure out her involvement with the media. If he could uncover this, what else could he discover? He might even link they evidence they found in the warehouse to her. The thought made her uneasy.

"You know the rules, Xiao Lu. We can’t meet without the chief’s consent. I am undercover, after all," she said, trying to maintain her composure. Hearing her use his nickname, Agent Lu’s heart swelled with hope. She had always been so formal, treating him like just another colleague. This small sign of affection made him feel elated.

"We can meet without him knowing," he insisted, his voice tinged with desperation.

Peng Xiu’s eyes narrowed. "No one can know we are meeting, otherwise we will get into trouble."

"Okay, see you then," he said, his voice filled with anticipation.

Peng Xiu hung up the call, her jaw clenched. She had to deal with Agent Lu before he became a bigger problem. He was a loose end that needed to be tied up, and she couldn’t afford any mistakes.

Xiang Yu stretched out his legs in the interrogation room, leaning his head back to gaze at the flickering light on the ceiling. The harsh, fluorescent glow cast erratic shadows across the room, but Xiang Yu remained unfazed. Chief Xi, seated across from him, was growing increasingly frustrated with each passing minute of silence. Despite the Chief’s relentless questioning, Xiang Yu didn’t utter a single word. His demeanour was unnervingly calm, more relaxed than the Chief himself.

A sharp knock on the door interrupted the tense silence. Agent Shen burst in, his face pale with urgency. "Chief, it’s bad," he said, his voice trembling.

Chief Xi, assuming it was Xiang Yu’s lawyer, barked, "Didn’t I tell you to stall him?"

"It’s not that," Agent Shen replied, casting a nervous glance at Xiang Yu, who continued to stare at the ceiling, seemingly indifferent to the commotion. "Don’t mind me, I can wait," he said in leisurely tone.

Chief Xi stood up, his chair scraping loudly against the floor. "Don’t get too comfortable," he warned Xiang Yu. "This isn’t over."

Xiang Yu lowered his head, a faint smile playing on his lips, but he remained silent. Chief Xi, seething with anger, kicked the chair before storming out of the room. The sound of the key turning in the lock echoed in the small space, and Xiang Yu sighed. He knew better than to leave any incriminating evidence lying around. The warehouse they had raided was harmless, filled only with stock from Xiang Shu’s online business. The so-called evidence was undoubtedly planted by Peng Xiu. Too bad for her, she wouldn’t get what she wanted.

Outside, the entire department was glued to the TV screens, watching the live broadcast. Armed police were seen bringing in crates of weapons from the warehouse they had raided less than an hour ago. The young reporter on the screen was animated, reporting that nothing illegal had been found in the warehouse and that the crates of evidence were planted. She questioned the origins of the firearms and whether the Bureau of Organized Crime had them ready to frame innocent citizens. Her final words were a chilling warning: "Be careful who you offend as a law-abiding citizen, because next time, it could be you. If the warehouse had no cameras, who knows if the truth would have come out."

Chief Xi, watching the broadcast, was livid. He kicked a nearby table, sending everything on it crashing to the floor. His phone, along with every other phone in the department, began ringing incessantly. It was likely their superiors, demanding answers. Chief Xi had no idea that his subordinates had acted behind his back.
