Chapter 135: "You... you... you are a fox demon!"
He would even take the opportunity to take advantage of him all in the name of guiding his path. For instance, if there was a rock on his path Han Xin would hold his hand or waist and pull him out of the way. Xiang Yu felt like a weak damsel who needed her prince to guide her everywhere.
Feeling if they stayed in this place any longer, he might end up exploding on the love-sick fool, he called out to the Divine Emperor in his mind, asking for a way out of this place. The Divine Emperor soon answered, his voice resonating in Xiang Yu’s mind. "What is it?" he asked sounding like he had been interrupted while doing something very important.
"Your Holiness, may you please show me a way out of these tunnels," Xiang Yu replied, his tone unusually polite.
The Divine Emperor sensed something was off. Xiang Yu always called him old man and his tone was always playful. Him being this polite and respectful was so out of character that he couldn’t ignore it. "Sure," he said his voice tinged with authority.
He sent Xiang Yu memories of the tunnels’ layout and the path back to the surface. Memories flooded Xiang Yu’s mind like vivid brushstrokes painting a map. "There you go. I will tell the girls where to meet you."
"Thank you very much. You are quite magnanimous," Xiang Yu said, his voice still uncharacteristically courteous.
The Divine Emperor’s suspicion grew stronger. Something very bad must have happened for him to be so well behaved but what could it be? "What’s going on, Xiang Yu? Why are you being so... nice?"
"Nothing. Why?" Xiang Yu responded, trying to sound nonchalant.
The Divine Emperor was not convinced. He would be the stupid one if he believed it. "What did you do last night?"
"Nothing, just slept late," Xiang Yu replied lying effortlessly like he was used to it. His act was perfect, and if one was being honest, he might win an award for it, but the being he was addressing wasn’t easily fooled.
"Are you sure nothing at all happened? You just slept late?" the Divine Emperor pressed like a mother questioning a toddler about missing cookies. Xiang Yu was the toddler in this case, lying that they didn’t know what happened to the cookies, yet he had crumbs on his cheeks.
"Yes, nothing happened," he insisted.
The Divine Emperor remained silent for what seemed an eternity before fading away momentarily. His silence was so loud. Xiang Yu could almost hear him say you better tell me the truth before I go and check myself. He vanished from his mind, and the guilty venerable one exhaled deeply, but his relief was short-lived.
Two minutes later, Xiang Yu heard the sound of screaming in his head. It turns out the silence before was just the calm before the storm. He froze mid-step, and Han Xin behind him halted, too, his brow furrowed with concern. "What’s wrong?" he asked his voice soft yet urgent. He stepped closer as though to instinctively shield him.
Xiang Yu forced a smile and said, "It’s nothing. Let’s keep going. I think I know the way out." Han Xin didn’t doubt her words. In fact, he had also figured out a way out using the sound of the water bouncing off the cave walls. He just didn’t say anything because she seemed to have figured it out, too.
Xiang Yu said it was nothing but it wasn’t. The Divine Emperor’s voice was yelling in his mind scolding him to the high heavens. "You... you... you are a fox demon! I told you to keep your paws off of him! You seduced my son! How dare you! Let me see how you are going to explain it today. This was clearly not an accident wuwuwuwu."
Xiang Yu was busy questioning if this Divine Emperor was really legit. Why was he crying like he had murdered Han Xin? They just made out. What was the big deal? Soon he found out how much of a big deal it was. When he heard the word son his eyes widened in shock. "Wait, wait, wait. Your son?... Han Xin is your son?"
The Divine Emperor realised he had slipped up, revealing a piece of information he never intended to divulge. He snorted, trying to change the narrative. "Look who needs their ears checked now. What son?"
Xiang Yu was about to refute the old man when Han Xin seized hold of his arm abruptly yanking him aside. An explosive force blasted through the tunnel wall where Xiang Yu had just been standing. Debris flew everywhere, and Han Xin hugged Xiang Yu tightly as they hid behind a cave wall, shielding themselves from the flying rubble.
After a while the dust settled, and the tunnel was eerily silent. Han Xin’s grip on Xiang Yu tightened, his breath warm against his ear. "Are you okay?" he whispered; his voice filled with concern.
Xiang Yu nodded, his heart still racing from the close call. "Yes, I am fine," he replied, his voice steady despite the turmoil inside of him. He glanced at Han Xin, their faces inches apart, and felt a surge of protectiveness.
He reached out to touch Han Xin’s temple, noticing a small trickle of blood. "Are you okay? Is your arm fine?" he asked, his voice filled with concern.
Han Xin was about to assure her that he was fine when she suddenly spun them both away. The wall they had been hiding behind shattered into pieces as a massive snake burst through it, its scales glistening ominously in the dim light. The creature’s eyes glowed with a menacing intensity, and its hiss echoed through the tunnel.
Xiang Yu gritted his teeth in anger, his hand instinctively reaching for his dagger. He was ready to charge forward and confront the beast, but Han Xin grabbed his arm, stopping him. The snake reared up, growing taller and taller until it towered over them, its forked tongue flicking out menacingly.
"Wait," Han Xin said, his voice calm but urgent. "I have a plan."
Xiang Yu, who was used to fighting alone, felt a strange sense of trust in Han Xin. Despite the chaos around them, he nodded his head, signalling his agreement.
