Chapter 106: "Our master is an upright young miss with no special interests,"

When they entered the private room, they were greeted by the soft, golden light of the late afternoon sun streaming through intricately carved wooden screens, casting delicate patterns on the polished floor. The air was thick with the scent of sandalwood and jasmine incense, mingling with the faint aroma of tea.

At the centre of the room, a Kang table gleamed in the sunlight, set on a raised platform accessible by two short stairs adorned with plush, red cushions embroidered with golden threads. The cushions were scattered generously around the room, inviting one to sink into their softness.

The walls were adorned with vibrant silk tapestries depicting mythical creatures and serene landscapes, framed by fine woodwork that added to the room’s opulence and timeless elegance. The high ceiling, from which a grand wooden chandelier hung, accentuated the spaciousness, its carvings a dazzling display. In comparison to the brothel he grew up in, this place was luxurious and pristine. Whoever owned It invested so much into it.

Lian and Mei didn’t wait around for their master. Yi Nuo watched them settle onto the plush cushions without waiting for Peng Xiu to sit down first. They were nothing like the palace maidservants she had seen serve the princesses in the capital. They behaved like Peng Xiu was their mother, but the age difference wasn’t making sense, or maybe the kind-hearted princess had adopted them.

Xiang Yu sat down and found that the fabric of the cushions was quite soft and comfortable. He was about to stop the twins from hitting each other with the cushions when he saw that Yi Nuo was still standing there looking at the twins with some confusion. "Sister Nuo, please sit," he said and Yi Nuo snapped out of it. She sat down but she was still uncomfortable with this place despite how relaxing it was.

The young host knelt beside them, his hands trembling slightly as he placed one on his arm. His voice wavered as he asked, "W-what would you like to drink, young miss?"

Lian and Mei exchanged amused glances, finding his nervousness endearing. He wasn’t much older than them in the real world. Lian leaned forward, a playful smile on her lips. "Aren’t you supposed to tell us your name first?"

Mei nodded, cupping her face with both palms. The young man’s eyes darted nervously before he bowed deeply his forehead pressing against the floor. "I-I am sorry for making a mistake. Please don’t replace me. I will do my best to serve you."

Lian and Mei looked at Xiang Yu, confusion evident in their eyes. They had only been teasing him, but the young man seemed genuinely afraid. Xiang Yu’s gaze remained fixed on the young host; his expression unreadable. Throughout the years that he lived at the brothel, he saw plenty of girls brought in and out.

For a month they were locked in a room underground and beaten to submission. If the madam was unimpressed with them, she would sell them off to other brothels. Xiang Yu felt like they were even more pitiful than him so he would go to the nearby restaurant and beg the chef for any leftovers.

Sometimes, the chef was nice, but sometimes, he would chase him away. Xiang Yu would take the food to the small window and pass the food to them through the gaps in the bars. He wished he could save them but he was just a powerless young kid with a mother that hated him.

This was why he was liked by the younger courtesans. It was because when they were getting starved for disobeying the madam he fed them at the risk of getting caught by her. Xiang Yu could sense that this young man was going through the same treatment. The world was different but the principles were the same.

After what felt like an eternity, he came back to himself and finally spoke, his voice calm and measured. "You should stop kowtowing." The young man’s malnourished body quivered at his words.

Yi Nuo’s heart raced, fearing that the princess might be offended and that the young man would be punished. To her surprise, Peng Xiu’s lips curved into a gentle smile. "Relax. I don’t care about such little things. What is your name?"

The young man’s face flushed, and his eyes glistened with unshed tears. "Baihe, young miss," he stuttered.

Xiang Yu’s eyes narrowed slightly knowing fully well that wasn’t his real name. This was the name the madam assigned to him because he appeared pure and innocent thus the name lily. "What is your real name?"

Baihe hesitated, his gaze dropping to the floor. The madam had warned him not to reveal his true name. It was against the rules. He bit his lip, silently pleading with her not to press this matter further.

Xiang Yu noticed Baihe squeezing his sleeve, a subtle gesture that hinted at an injury. Not wanting to force him to talk, he said gently, "Okay, Baihe, please get us your finest wine and some jasmine tea."

He bowed and scurried towards the door. Once he was gone, Lian turned to her master. "Master, he—"

Xiang Yu pressed a finger to his lips, signalling her to remain silent. The walls had ears. This wasn’t him guessing that they were being spied on. He knew as a matter-of-fact that someone was listening to their conversation. Even in the brothel he grew up in, there were secret rooms in the walls that the clients didn’t know about. The madam used them to watch the courtesans especially when they were new. If they made a mistake she would punish them. This was an effective way to keep them under her control.

Lian nodded having understood her master’s meaning, but Yi Nuo was surprised. She asked curiously changing her address so as not to alert the spy on Peng Xiu’s real identity, "Has the young miss been to a place like this before?"

The twins immediately denied it on Xiang Yu’s behalf. What if this reaches Han Xin’s ears? Wouldn’t their master be dumped before the relationship even began? "Our master is an upright young miss with no special interests,"

"She loves reading books, and if she is not reading, she is hunting," they insisted, defending his honour. Yes, he would be hunting, hunting for demons who had attacked humans.

While they were defending their master, Baihe returned. His movements were a little nervous as he poured wine into small porcelain cups. He had delayed because the madam had stopped him, instructing him to milk as much money from his clients as possible. Baihe tried to say that he was too inexperienced but the madam said that they seemed generous and naïve.
