Veilbreaker! Oops I Bleed Again -
Chapter 51: Pursuit
Chapter 51: Pursuit
Straight ahead, there was a metal train track embedded in the floor.
It seemed as if it was an escape route.
"Shit. When will this facility end?" Draven muttered, irritation creeping into his voice.
They had been running for over an hour, but the endless metal corridors stretched like a long tunnel.
As they did so, the atmosphere shifted.
The further they ran, the colder the air became.
Belle and Deka rubbed their arms, shivering.
"Hey, this isn’t normal," Deka muttered. "It wasn’t this cold earlier."
As they reached an intersection, they skidded to a stop.
There are two paths to take.
To the left there’s a heavy steel door.
Frost formed along its edges.
The temperature dropped significantly in that area.
Bella and Deka panted from running, catching their breath.
"Which way?" Belle asked.
Draven stared straight ahead.
He knew Commander Dex and Duke Marcus had gone that way.
They were the real enemies.
But his gaze shifted left.
A gut feeling clawed at him.
The cold wasn’t natural.
This place was hiding something.
Draven exhaled sharply.
"Tch... Let’s go left."
Bella’s eyes widened.
"Wait. What?! Why?"
Draven’s tone was firm.
"Because whatever’s in there is important."
Draven already has an idea of what is inside of this frozen room.
He turned his back to the escape route.
His black eyes gleamed as he faced the frosted door.
The closer they walked, the colder it became.
Their breath turned to smoke.
The air was so frigid that the steel walls creaked.
Deka clutched his arms tightly.
"Hey... we can’t go further. It’s too cold!"
Bella’s teeth chattered.
Even Draven, usually unaffected by temperature, felt the chill sinking into his bones.
"You can stay behind," Draven said.
The door loomed before them. Its metal was frozen solid.
Draven stretched his fingers, and his knuckles cracked.
Then he grinned.
"Guess I’ll just have to warm it up."
The sliding metal doors groaned as Draven forced them open.
A wave of cold mist poured out, curling at their feet.
The air stung their skin.
"You two can go back."
Draven’s voice was calm but firm, and his face was serious.
Bella turned to him, confused.
Then her eyes widened in realization.
"Don’t tell me... this room is..."
Her voice caught.
The horrible truth hit her.
Deka blinked, confused.
"I don’t get it. What’s wrong with this place?"
Draven exhaled sharply.
"That’s why I told you to stay behind. If you look, you won’t forget it."
Deka hesitated, then nodded.
"Fine. I’ll stay."
He raised a barrier behind them, sealing the entrance.
Bella gritted her teeth.
"I’m coming."
Draven didn’t argue.
They stepped inside.
And they froze.
It’s not from the cold but from the horror before them.
There were rows and rows of frozen people lining the walls.
On their wrists were green tags, identifying them as Verdants.
Their skins were pale and stiff, trapped inside thick ice.
Their chests were hollow.
Their hearts were missing.
Their heads were caved in, and their brains were gone.
Their bodies were withered and dried out as if they were drained of every last drop of blood.
Bella’s breath hitched as if it were caught in her throat.
Her trembling fingers clenched into fists, and her body shook with rage.
"Monsters... They were the real monsters..." Her voice trembled.
Her vision blurred with tears.
"Heartless demons! How could they?!"
Her scream echoed through the frozen chamber.
Draven kept moving, walking ahead in silence.
Bella sobbed in anger, trembling.
But Draven’s fury was quiet.
Suddenly, he stopped. And his eyes narrowed.
A different section was on the right side of the room.
It’s the experimentation zone.
There were dissected beast corpses, shattered monster skulls, torn-off claws, fangs, and tails.
All are carefully arranged, labeled, and studied.
Some were stitched together.
Hybrid limbs were fused with different species.
There was also a massive table in the center with half-formed creatures.
Their bodies were a twisted fusion of Beasts and Monsters.
Draven’s gaze swept over everything.
His jaw tensed, and his fingers twitched.
He continued and stepped forward, and that’s when he saw something.
A cart.
A large steel cart rested at the far end of the room.
It is big enough to carry humans and beasts alike.
It seemed to be a transport system.
Bella followed his gaze.
"Let’s go," Draven said, his mind racing.
This place was massive.
The sheer effort and time it took to build this facility...
This wasn’t some temporary hideout.
It was a long-term operation.
As they stepped outside the frozen chamber, Deka noticed Bella.
Her eyes were red from crying.
But her expression...
It was murderous.
Deka hesitated to ask.
Bella walked past him without a word.
Her silence felt louder than theirs.
Draven, meanwhile, lifted the heavy transport cart.
With a single motion, he set it on the metal trail.
It fits perfectly.
Obviously, this cart was used to transport them here.
He glanced ahead.
The tracks stretched endlessly.
’How far does this road go?’
"Get in here." Draven’s voice was firm.
"Huh? With this?" Deka asked, blinking.
But Bella climbed in immediately without a word.
Deka followed.
Draven placed both hands on the cart, and a small grin formed.
[Gale Glide!]
"WHOOSH!"
Draven launched forward, flying low and pushing the cart at insane speed.
The wheels spun wildly as they rocketed down the tracks.
The air howled and the wind pressure slammed into Bella and Deka’s faces.
"S-SLOW D-DOWN S-SIR."
Deka struggled to form words with the wind pressuring his face.
Even Bella, who had been furious moments ago, was now gripping the sides for dear life.
Draven laughed.
"Damn, I miss my big bike."
He remembered the feeling of cruising at top speed after a fight at the Pentagon, just for the thrill of it.
"Just trust me, guys. This is not my first time!" He shouted through the winds.
After two hours, Draven narrowed his eyes and activated [Hawk’s Eye!].
His vision extended ahead.
Still, there was nothing.
"Tch. I still can’t see them."
Draven’s brows furrowed.
’That fireman and the rich guy. Are they faster than me?’
Draven clicked his tongue in frustration.
"What the hell? Are they running at 200 kph?!"
Suddenly, he felt something.
There’s a slight wobble beneath the cart
Draven’s gaze dropped to the wheels.
They were shaking. And the metal was groaning under the speed.
"Tch. This cart won’t last much longer."
Draven slowed down and then narrowed his eyes.
Ahead, the road split into two.
To the left, the metal trail continued endlessly into the darkness.
To the right, there was a closed, large metal door again.
Draven slowed the cart, his mind calculating.
He examined both paths.
They had raced at full speed for two hours.
And still, there was no sign of Commander Dex or Duke Marcus.
"Let’s check this first." Draven pointed to the door.
Bella frowned. "Are you sure? Shouldn’t we keep going after them?"
Draven’s gaze darkened.
Something wasn’t right.
"Think about it." His voice was low, serious.
"We were moving at over 100 kph, but we did not overtake them. Not even a trace. No footprints. No damage to the tracks. No hidden exits."
Draven’s realization hit.
"It doesn’t make sense. Unless they didn’t take this path at all," he continued, "which means this tunnel is full of secret passages."
From the start, the two push buttons that needed to be pushed together at once, the camouflaged window, and even the wall door at the battlefield.
This facility wasn’t just for experiments.
It was designed for something else too.
It seemed like this place was too hidden and they did not want it to be discovered by the outside world.
Draven exhaled.
"Think about it. The kingdom allows Verdants to be enslaved. But they don’t care beyond that."
"But this, they were experimenting on Hybrids. Shouldn’t humans stay away from them because of their danger to humanity?"
Bella’s eyes widened.
She understood.
"So this was illegal."
"I think so. This is certainly illegal."
Draven nodded before turning toward the metal door.
"We need to see everything, including what’s inside."
They all went to the door.
And as Draven opened it, they were surprised that it was not what they expected.
