Chapter 352 Furong Cake
Chapter 352: Chapter 352 Furong Cake
Finding Liu Suqing’s address was not an easy task.
She didn’t know her birthdate, only finding her photo and birth month and year online.
With just this information, one couldn’t pinpoint someone’s exact location, so Jiang Li had to resort to using copper coins for a long time before she determined a place.
Whether it was the right place, they would have to depend on their luck.
The car carried them towards the south of the city, until it headed towards a small mountain and finally stopped at the foot of the mountain.
The driver looked at the rugged mountain path and the huge trees on both sides, his face full of apology as he turned around.
"Madam, miss, there’s no road up the mountain, the car can’t make it, you might have to climb up yourselves."
"That’s okay, you can go back now, no need to wait for us."
Jiang Li had expected this.
For that reason, before they left, she had specifically asked Lin Man Ru to change into a proper and comfortable set of clothes and shoes.
Fortunately, the mountain was not very high, and the terrain was not steep. Moreover, the weather was quite good today, it was almost autumn, the sky was high and the air was refreshing, quite pleasant.
Jiang Li opened the car door and got out, then extended her hand to Lin Man Ru, "Mom, let’s treat this as exercise, to relax a bit."
"Okay."
Lin Man Ru also got down from the car happily.
It had been a long time since she had gone mountain climbing alone with her daughter.
The last time was when she was little, back then she was innocent and cute, constantly clinging to her like a little tail.
She didn’t know what happened later, how such a lovely little girl turned into a rebellious person.
Fortunately, the sensible and well-behaved her had come back now.
Lin Man Ru happily took her hand, more excited than ever, and the two walked and laughed along the way.
Even the three-hour journey passed very pleasantly.
Near the top of the mountain, a small bamboo house came into view.
The bamboo house was elegantly built, not large, but fully equipped; there was even a water wheel at the door, creaking as it operated.
A woman dressed in a long gown, draped with a cloud shoulder, and light in figure, was bending over in the small yard, carefully tending to the flowers that filled the yard.
Every movement she made carried grace and ease.
Even though she looked somewhat different from the photo online, Jiang Li recognized her at first glance—that was Liu Suqing.
She had aged quite a bit, her hair had turned white, and her face had more wrinkles, but her spirit seemed still robust, her eyes flowing with a brilliance that the years could not wash away.
Soon, Liu Suqing also heard some noises, lifted her head to look their way, and immediately showed a wary expression.
"Who are you?"
Lin Man Ru quickly pulled Jiang Li and said, "Hello Master Liu, my name’s Lin Man Ru, this is my daughter Jiang Li. We’ve long admired your name, and came specially from the Capital to visit you."
Liu Suqing’s initial instinct was to send them away.
She could see right away what these people’s goal was.
She also disliked dealing with outsiders, finding it bothersome.
However, for some reason, when she caught sight of the mud on Lin Man Ru’s shoes and her tightly held daughter’s hand, her heart was suddenly moved.
After hesitating for a moment, she took off her gloves, lowered her eyelids and said, "Alright, come in."
Lin Man Ru was instantly overjoyed, but she still managed to act calm and with a single "Ah" she led Jiang Li into Liu Suqing’s yard.
Only when they got closer did they realize her yard was actually not small. It was filled with various flowers and plants, fragrant and refreshing, a sight that instantly lifted one’s spirits.
Liu Suqing walked to a wooden table, picked up a teapot on it, and took out three cups to pour some water.
"This old place of mine doesn’t get many visitors, it’s not easy for you to have found it. Sit down and have some tea to quench your thirst."
Lin Manru didn’t hesitate and boldly sat down opposite Liu Suqing.
This couldn’t help but bring out some good feelings in Liu Suqing.
She hated those who obviously had great desires but acted coy and pretentious.
This one called Lin Manru was straightforward.
Jiang Li also tasted the tea in front of her, and after a moment, her eyes lit up as she slowly said, "This is made with mountain spring water and pine needles, isn’t it?"
Liu Suqing finally showed a hint of surprise on her face.
Then she examined the extraordinary-looking girl from top to bottom.
"You’re so young and yet you know about tea?"
Jiang Li set down her teacup and smiled, "I learned a bit previously, I also love reading the ’tea classics,’ and I like making my own tea when free."
Liu Suqing nodded, "It’s rare these days for young people to have the patience to delve into such matters."
Seeing Liu Suqing’s softened attitude, Jiang Li then placed the box she had been carrying onto the table.
"Miss Liu, this is a gift my mother and I brought for you, a little token of appreciation. We hope you won’t disdain it."
Liu Suqing’s expression changed immediately.
She coldly glanced at the box and then turned her head away in annoyance.
"Take your things and go, I don’t need them. I kept you here to drink tea not because I agreed to help you with your affairs, but because I saw how tired you were climbing the mountain and didn’t want you to die here."
Jiang Li was not discouraged, but instead pushed the box forward a bit.
"Miss Liu, you misunderstood. What’s inside the box isn’t anything valuable, just some confectionery my mother and I made."
"You, living secluded in the mountains all year round, rarely get to taste things from the outside world. Though the pine needle tea made from mountain spring water is fragrant, it has a bitter aftertaste, and goes well with sweets, enhancing their flavor."
Liu Suqing’s excitement was piqued by these words.
Jiang Li wasn’t lying.
It had been almost a year since she last left the mountain, and although one could find some meat here, it mostly consisted of game which had a strong scent.
The vegetables here were too bland.
Such sweet, soft confectionery was indeed a rare treat.
Liu Suqing shifted her body slightly and glanced at the box.
"What kind of confectionery is inside?"
"It’s Furong Cake," Jiang Li said as she opened the box, "It contains caramel, honey, and osmanthus, and is topped with a layer of soft white sugar. It’s crumbly without being greasy. Miss Liu, you might want to give it a try."
Liu Suqing took a piece of the cake that Jiang Li handed her and took a bite.
Indeed, it was crisp and not greasy.
The sweet aroma of honey and osmanthus blended well together, with a delicate scent of lotus when savored.
With another sip of tea, it left a lingering fragrance on her lips and teeth.
Liu Suqing ate with satisfaction and finally took out a handkerchief to wipe her lips.
"You can make tea and such confectionery, you must not be an ordinary person, tell me, what is your purpose in seeking me?"
She could see, this girl called Jiang Li was no ordinary person.
She must possess some exceptional qualities.
Lin Manru brightened up.
They say this Miss Jin Zhen had the most dreadful temper, could her willingness to converse mean she was relenting?
Lin Manru was just about to pull out her prepared blueprint when suddenly a rough male voice interjected —
"Master Liu, I am here again!"
