Chapter 688: A surprising title

One by one, the representative of every family stepped forward and received the documents, from Chi Wei, shook hands with the emperor and took a picture with him.

The Jun’s were given the rank of duke, which came as no surprise to anyone because of how their family was already ranked among the aristocrats. If they had been given a title less than that one, it would be a shame.

When her father’s name was called, Chi Lian paid keen attention, waiting to hear what title he would be bequeathed.

Minister Chi Rui loudly announced, "The new Marquis Chi, of the second rank."

"Woohoo!!" Chi Lian cheered and stood up abruptly and then, she started clapping enthusiastically. The titles were being awarded with plots of land in various cities, and she wondered where they had been given.

Papa Chi returned to his seat and gave his wife a one armed hug, Mama Chi wiped tears from her eyes, swallowing the loud shout of joy which she wanted to let out. When she married a struggling orphaned papa Chi back then, she had no idea that someday he would become a noble man.

She could not help looking at Chi Lian and holding her hand, with an appreciative smile on her face. It was her daughter that made all this possible by pulling them out of that slum single handedly.

Chi Lian squeezed her mother’s hand and she laughed. They would celebrate this big win tonight, in fact they should celebrate for an entire month.

Her fingers were quick to pay a short visit to weibo and add something else to her username.

@Official true Lady Midas Chi: [I am the young lady of a noble family, thank you everyone for your prayers and heartfelt wishes. Thank you mighty emperor for bestowing this glory on our family, may your reign be long and prosperous.]

She put her phone away and watched the matriarch of the Ai family pick up their marquis documents. The Ai’s and the Chi’s were on the same level now, it was unbelievable.

They were a part of some of the families that considered themselves to be true nobles and the Chi’s commoners. Now, the emperor had leveled the playing field completely.

"Congratulations." Chi Lian said loudly while the matriarch passed by.

The matriarch of the Ai’s nodded in recognition of her words and continued moving.

"We have just reduced your number of enemies, please stop working hard to gain new ones." T4 told her.

"I was not taunting her, I was being sincere." Chi Lian lied.

"Like I believe you." T4 scoffed.

One and a half hours later, the last name was called and the last document delivered.

If one to observe, they would notice that some of the Chi’s and the Jun’s kept looking at their watches. They had somewhere else to be, it seemed and they had to be on time.

"There are ten more names of individuals whose outstanding contributions to the empire have earned them royal recognition and a title. When your name is read, please come forward and recognition, a medal of excellence and royal title.

Professor Mo Tao, from hereby known as Lord Qing, Mr. Song Yen, hereby known as a baron of the first rank, Shang Tu Tu, hereby known as a count of the third rank." Chi Rui rapidly read names and titles and on the tenth individual, he looked up and said, "Miss Chi Lian, here by known as commoner princess of the first rank."

It took Chi Lian a moment to internalize the shock and then react to it.

Her mother was slapping her back lightly and telling her to get up, and Chi Zimo was saying something. She could see his mouth moving but she could barely hear a word he said. The shock had managed to throw her off balance.

"Congratulations host, I did a great job keeping this secret from you, right?" T4 said.

"Yes," she answered slowly.

"Get up, get up now." Mama Chi pulled her up to her feet and pushed her to the walkway leading up to the podium.

She heard someone cheering loudly, and recognized Muyang’s voice. On this occasion, they had been forced to sit separately as they were organized according to ranks. They had not even known ahead of time that the strict sitting arrangement was because of this reason.

She smiled and waved at him nervously, ignoring the minor tremors in her legs as she walked forward. For all her bravado, this would have been her moment to walk boastfully and proudly but she walked meekly and slowly, which most people attributed to elegance and posture.

"Husband, look at her," Madam An, in the crowd, sitting among the families of viscounts wanted to cry.

"You taught her well." grandpa Wang told her, proud of the way Chi Lian was carrying herself.

The old madam had joined Muyang in cheering, loud and proud while the old master sat back with a smug look on his face. His friends should prepare themselves for a night filled with boasting. They would never hear the end of it. His grandson was now married to a titled princess.

While some people were proud or happy for her, others were not because they were of the opinion that the emperor was doing this to elevate the status of the family his daughter married into.

Some of the daughter’s of the noble families frowned, or scowled, struggling to hide their displeasure. Among these were Yan Daya’s friends who loved to gossip about Chi Lian.

For most, the question on their minds was, ’What had she done to deserve this honor?’

If this question was paused to Muyang, he would gladly shout out loud all that she had accomplished and all she planned to accomplish. He had seen the plans for some of the technologies she planned to introduce, under her lead the bullet speed train project in F city was half way done. She had already purchased the land in Pindanshan to build the university. All that news in the empire about someone mysterious leaving boxes of money on the doors of orphanages was her work. Even public hospitals had received large donations which no one could make heads or tails of.

She had accomplished more than majority of what most people there had accomplished and no one was as worthy as her to receive that title.

T4 got busy, continuing to post.

The mighty Little peep star: [The biggest shock of the title bequeathal ceremony, Midas Chi has been named Commoner Princess of the first rank. She has gone from Lady to princess in a matter of hours, how did this happen?]

A short clip of her surprised face when the title was mentioned was attached to the post and the netizens rushed in with comments.

[Oh my God, the emperor is giving out princess titles!! Where were my parents when this was happening?]

[Wow, she must be excited, she has always wanted to be called lady Chi after all.]

[But, did the emperor have to add commoner to the title? Should I spell and explain the word common for everyone here to understand.]

[This is a joke I mean she is good business woman and all but what has she done to serve the princess title? Even if it comes without perks, there must be more deserving women.]

[I work for phoenix media, the only media house with two princesses’ in the empire. My ancestors must be so proud of me.]

[If one can get it, others can too so let me work hard this year and maybe I will be a commoner princess too someday.]

In the royal palace, Chi Lian received her documents and had her picture taken with the emperor.

"You are happy now, right?" The emperor asked her.

"I will continue to work hard for our empire, your highness, thank you for this honor." She answered.

She was the last individual to be given a royal title and the ceremony was concluded with a loud applause and the singing of the empire’s anthem.

As soon as the emperor left, the noise and chatter became louder as family members hugged, congratulated each other, took pictures and did all that they wanted. For sure, it would be the trending news all day.

The Chi’s and the Jun’s however were not part of those engaging in these festivities, and neither were their close family friends. They all had a different place to be and they were in a hurry to get there.
