Chapter 591: A rat vendor

The old master, grandpa Jun temporarily settled the issue of the Rai family’s housing. As it turned out, a wealthy family like theirs would have no need to move into another family’s home, they had other plans already.

With that matter settled, she ate, showered, dressed, went to her office and picked up Sally. The two women disguised themselves while a curious Sally asked Chi Lian where they were going to.

"We are going to a place where I might be in need of your skills." She replied.

Spider drove them to the old ancient antique street, where the building She needed to clear out stood. The ancient street was even less attractive than it appeared to be in pictures. It was more like an old run down neighborhood that needed redevelopment. Most of the buildings were short and they still maintained the old designs which did not match the modern aesthetic feel of the capital. The tiny cobble streets were overcrowded and narrow, resulting into people squeezing together uncomfortably as they walked. This area had to be a pick pockets best dream.

"It’s amazing that places like this still exist in the capital, right? Sally said.

"Makes me wonder why it has not been brought down yet." Chi Lian answered.

"They tried a few years ago I think but some organizations made loud noise and demonstrated outside the palace for days as they claimed that this is a historical street which should be saved, in reality everyone knows that it’s a den that harbors all sorts of riff raff and should be eliminated. Despite looking like this, millions are exchanged in this place daily from all sorts of illegal businesses. You would think that with all that money the street would be beautified at least, but no." Sally shook her head and tsked, it was so unbelievable to her.

"Mmm," Chi Lian mumbled, as they walked further to the inner and central area of the street where the building was.

She stopped and stood, which made Sally stop as well and both women looked at the building. It was painted brown, the downer parts of the building were used as offices but as one’s eyes travelled further up, they would see clothes hanging out from balconies which also made it an apartment building.

"Are you looking for someone in there boss?" Sally asked her.

"Something like that." She answered vaguely, not elaborating further on her true reason for being here.

Sally was wise enough not to ask anything more and instead she said, "How can I be of help boss?"

"You have a good eye and what I need is your keen observation on the occupants of the building or it’s surroundings. I have looked hard but I can’t seem to find the true owner, its owned by an overseas corporation that owns nothing else. Even then, the owner of the corporation exists on paper but physically they are a ghost. I am curious, who owns it?"

"Eh, boss if you want information in this kind of place the best place to get it is in a drinking spot. Not the fancy looking ones, an old place run by a healthy talkative old woman, man or a young exhausted one that does not fit in. Their is a term for such people in this place, they are called information sellers or rat vendors. And you cannot just speak to any of them because they can’t be trusted too, you have to speak to the right one. Let’s go, I will wow you with my skills today." Sally looked confident, she even took a hairband out of her pocket and tied up the long black hair. "Boss lady, follow me, I will do all the talking. Just sit back looking unimpressed and disdained by this place like a rich snob, when I hold my hand out, bring out a wad of cash. We should put on gloves as well, don’t touch anything unnecessary with your bare hands."

Since she brought her for her expertise, Chi Lian nodded and did as Sally asked as they went from one small restaurant or bar to the other. They visited ten places before turning around and Sally led her into the third place they had walked into but left previously.

This tiny restaurant had a maximum of six tables, three on each side which left the middle part clear for movement. Each square shaped table could sit a total of four people at a time. It was an old but clean restaurant with one refrigerator in the corner filled with mostly cheap alcoholic beverages. At the moment, it was devoid of any hungry customers and only three people were inside, Chi Lian, Sally and the young woman who was reading a book from where she was sitting behind the counter. Sally led Chi Lian to the table which was closest to the counter and both of them sat down.

Usually, Chi Lian would have approached the woman directly and asked questions but since this Sally’s playbook, she sat back and waited.

The young woman acted unlike most restaurant owners who dashed over eagerly at the sight of customers to welcome them and take their orders. She took her sweet time coming over to meet and speak to them.

She was younger than she appeared when she came closer, not older than Chi Zimo, Chi Lian assumed. And yet, she wore thick make up which made her appear more mature and older than she appeared.

"People like you do not eat from places like this." was the first thing the young woman said as she slid into an empty chair opposite them. "What can I do for you customers?"

"Two bottles of Moutai." Sally said.

The young woman scoffed, brought three bottles, not two and she brought small sized drinking glasses as well.

"We will not need the glasses." Sally said.

"Why? Do you find them dirty?" the young woman scoffed before she asked this. She poured herself a glass and downed it in one sip.

"We are not interested in leaving traces." Sally answered. It was not unusual for people like this to save those glasses and if the right person came looking , and paid the right price, your DNA would be used to identify you.

"So you are seekers," she said and leaned forward, "I knew you were here to bless me the moment you walked through the door. What do you want to know? And before you speak keep in mind that every ten words costs ten thousand yuan."

In her mind, Chi Lian heard T4 cackling, obviously, he found the girl’s words to be ridiculous. Ten words cost ten thousand yuan!!

"It’s ridiculous, hell it’s theft." T4 said.

"It’s the price of doing shady business." Chi Lian replied to him.

Sally on the other hand whispered to Chi Lian, ’Boss, now you hand over the money."

She gave Sally a big bundle of money which she put down on the table directly, "This is fifty thousand, it buys us fifty words."

Smiling, the young woman’s hands danced towards the bundle of cash, she touched it and sniffed it. "I hope you won’t mind if I check it first and ensure that it’s authentic, one can never be too trusting these days."

They waited for the woman to check as much as she wanted and then, they watched her walk towards the doors and lock them.

"Now, we can do business." she said and she sat back down. "Where should I begin?" she asked.

"This building." Sally said, handing her a picture which Chi Lian handed to her. "We want to know everything you know."

The young girl looked at the picture, then she looked at her two guests in surprise. She slid the picture back to them and said, "Sorry, this is not something fifty thousand can buy."
