Chapter 566: I have done much, I expect much
The prime minister tapped his fingers together after reading through the list of demands given by Chi Lian and Muyang. He found it quite curious how these two did not realize that right now, they were acting no better than the pirates. They were holding the treasures hostage unless their demands were met. Between husband and wife, the prime minister wondered who was having a worse influence over the other. He could see this being Muyang’s strategy but was his wife innocent?
"We can rescind this negotiation you know, we do have the authority to take what you have found and you will not be able to do anything about it." he said calmly.
"You can try." Muyang answered with a challenging gaze aimed at the prime minister. "You know better than me how that will play out."
"You two are playing with forces beyond your control." the prime minister replied.
Two kitchen staff came by with the chef and they placed the food around the table, bringing the conversation to a brief halt. When they left, all the royal guards stepped away, giving the three complete privacy.
Muyang took one perfectly fried piece of chicken and placed it on the prime minister’s plate. Then he said, "I am confident in myself, are you?"
The prime minister did the same, taking a piece of chicken from his own plate and adding it to Muyang’s plate. "Do you have to take it this far, brother?"
Chi Lian looked at both of them, thinking to herself that this was like playing a game of tennis with the ball going back and forth between these two. They were speaking cryptically as if she was a spy among them. Fed up of this, she tapped her plate with her chopsticks and said, "Everyone, can we speak clearly, I am part of this negotiation too. What is too difficult on this list of demands for the emperor? I found the treasure and the law says I can keep it but because of complications, here we are. To be frank, I am being haughty but ever since the crown princess belittled me, I have been been holding a very big grudge. Her insincere apology did not even cut it. I checked the law, since ancient days, the emperor has the right to bestow on a gifted and outstanding individual that has created great positive change in the empire a title. I have found a treasure worth billions, ergo positive great change. I have planted farms for the emperor, I cultivated Da Hong Pao for him, I caught a strategist for the rebels for him. My lab has made a great scientific breakthrough that will be a positive contribution to human health worldwide bringing glory to our empire and most importantly, I stumbled onto a conspiracy to kill the crown prince and I have been doing my best to save his life in the dark. Call it entitlement but the King of the British empire rewards his citizens that make significant changes to the empire. He makes them knights or gives them titles, why isn’t it the same here? I appreciate all the land, gold and silk the emperor has rewarded me with but half of it is used for farming under his direction. I need my family’s status to be elevated a bit. Let us be sincere towards each other."
"You stumbled on what?" the prime minister asked in a surprised voice.
"Aiya!!!" she mumbled, "I was planning holding on to that card a bit longer." She did not mean to reveal it yet and she had not even shared this information with Muyang yet. "I will not say anything more." she stubbornly shoved a piece of chicken into her mouth.
"You need to continue talking sister-in-law, what’s this about an attempt on the life of the crown prince?" The prime minister changed his way of addressing her now.
"She doesn’t have to say anything." Muyang answered.
The prime minister nodded and wiped his mouth slowly. "I guess I am not the most suitable person to handle the negotiation in this case. It seems there are matters of greater importance than this treasure to deal with tonight."
"Humph." she replied and continued eating her food. But before forgetting, she pulled Muyang closer and whispered to him, "Hubby, I was going to discuss the conspiracy with you when we got back, it just slipped out accidentally because I don’t feel their sincerity."
"We will discuss this when we are alone." he whispered to her.
’Oh crap! another spanking.’ she thought.
The three people at the table ate the dinner while classical piano music played from the speakers. The prime minister’s indecipherable body language made Chi Lian squirm for a while. Had she gone too far? But dammit, she wanted that stupid princess or outstanding lady title. Either that or a title for her father, one that would make their family true aristocracy which they were not. This was Muyang’s idea but it awakened the desire in her. If she was not Muyang’s wife, she would be looked upon as a servant by many of these families. They only respected her because of the Jun attachment otherwise the Chi’s alone were not worth much. When it came to wealth, the Chi’s were still on the bottom among the wealthy families in the courts. She alone was wealthier than her entire family put together, it would take some years for the infant Chi family to crawl their way up even if Chi Rui married the princess. Nobody said it aloud but the princess was a girl at the end of the day, she was more valuable to the Chi’s than the royals, or so most people thought.
When they finished their dinner, the plates were cleared away and desert was brought out. Because she was a big desert lover, the entire table was filled with many varieties. There was lemon ice-cream, sorbet, coffee cake, rice pudding, cinnamon cookies and chocolate dipped strawberries. They were in small quantities to ensure that one did not over eat.
Their wine glasses were also taken away and light colorful cocktails were brought.
Chi Lian started by dipping the cinnamon cookies in lemon ice cream and the prime minister gave Muyang a look which conveyed, ’What in the name of God is she doing?"
He shrugged and scooped a soft spoonful of coffee cake.
"Should we begin?" the prime minister asked and he took a bite of the chocolate dipped strawberries. He pout a small rectangular black box on the table. It had a small lens, which gave it the appearance of a camera. "This is something Mujin our nations brightest has been working on." he explained and he pressed something. A purple light appeared and the emperor joined them in the form of a hologram.
"Finally," the hologram said, "Can we begin breaking down this ridiculous list of demands. Wow, how can you two hold your empire hostage like this? I feel so betrayed mouse Chi."
"Sister-in-law, don’t surrender, I support you fully." Rize’s voice joined the conversation and she squeezed her face next to the emperor’s.
"Stay out of this." the emperor pushed her head away with one finger.
"No, I refuse." she returned forcefully. "Sister-in-law, my father has no idea how hard I hold in my anger everyday when I don’t slap those idiot women who say my marriage is worthless. Who has ever seen a worthless marriage of a princess? Someone said that by marrying a commoner, I was by virtue becoming one so I should lose my title as imperial princess. If my father-in-law has a title, no matter how low it is, our family can hold it’s head up. And my children will be aristocrats not commoners, sister-in-law, no surrendering."
