Chapter 545: The women’s high tea society is condemned
Nobody was more surprised than Chi Lian the next day when just as they were about to leave and escort the elders to their new apartment in the cold town, the personal maid of the matriarch of the Ai family showed up with a bodyguard, a lawyer and a briefcase of cash.
When she saw the bundles of cash which totaled up to five million Chi Lian raised her eyebrows and looked at the maid in a questioning manner. ’What’s this for?’ her eyes conveyed.
"The matriarch says she would love it if this incident did not make it past the walls of the two houses. She sends her sincerest apologies, the little master will also be receiving a different kind of education to set the crooked branch straight."
"T4, scan the money first, for all I know there could be a bomb or poison in this briefcase." She had been seriously intending to sue them for the crimes of kidnapping and attempted murder for her cat. The matriarch of the Ai’s was wiser than she looked for plugging the leaking hole quickly. The leaking hole in this case was Chi Lian who had a video of the crime.
"Please sign here if this settlement is agreeable." The lawyer handed her a well prepared document which was clearly an NDA.
"Aaaah," Chi Lian said slowly, "I don’t know if this NDA offends me more than it displeases me. I will accept the money in exchange for payment of treatment for my cat but I will not be signing the NDA." She gave the briefcase to Qi Qing who handed it to old tiger and Caizu who were moving cases out of the house. "Tell your matriarch that if my lips and hands were loose, I would have aired the video already. I own a media company after all. Like I said back in your house, I am not in the business of punishing children. The boy is five years old and unless he exhibits certain disturbing traits then he has simply been led astray by the adults. I heard that the maids were instructed to kill the cat which scratched him and in my thinking this instruction was given by an adult. Deal with the adults to save the child." She tore the NDA into pieces and stood up. "Please show yourselves out, we are going for a trip as you can see."
The lawyer looked at the maid and she pursed her lips as she watched Chi Lian walking away, unsure of what to do. She took her phone out of the pocket in her coat.
"Did you hear that matriarch?" She asked. The phone had been on the entire time and all that Chi Lian said, the matriarch heard clearly.
"You can return." Was the matriarch’s response and the maid hung up.
"Let’s go." She told the lawyer.
Watching them leave, the old madam and Weili peeped from a window on the side of the kitchen before coming out to bombard Chi Lian with questions.
"Are you really letting them go?"
"They don’t deserve to be forgiven."
"How much money were you given?"
"Grandma, uncle says we are going to be late." Rose interrupted Chi Lian’s interrogation session by the two women. "Grandpa says that we will leave without you."
"We are coming, go and stall for a few seconds." He Weili answered her.
"Uncle said that if you stall for time he and and aunt will go to the docks immediately and set off." Rose added.
Muyang had decided that they should leave for the honeymoon today since the elders were also moving with the today. In one hour’s time, they would be setting off on a yacht that would send them to the sea.
"First he changed the day when they are setting off and now he wants to just kidnap Chi-Chi before we can say a proper goodbye." The old madam mumbled. "He is as impatient as his grandfather."
Still, even as she mumbled, the three women walked to the cars which set off immediately for the cold town.
When they finally reached the new bridge, the old madam said to Chi Lian, "I hear that the city wants to start collecting a toll fee from all vehicles that enter and leave the town using the bridge. Is it true?"
"Mmm," She nodded, "It’s because the number of cars coming in has increased significantly."
"You paid for the bridge construction and they want to make money from it when they opposed you in the beginning. If this is not greed, I don’t know what is." The old madam sneered.
"It’s okay," she shrugged, "It’s not as if I simply constructed the bridge out of the goodness of my heart. If I was not doing business in this town I would never have done such a thing. But now that I think about it, there are poor areas in the empire where the people are still struggling to have access to good roads. Maybe our women’s high tea society could do something about it. I was reading up on most of the charity work the group does and every year it’s the same thing. Plant flowers, paint hospices, wash clothes in orphanages and donate some money. I am not criticizing the good work you have all done over the years grandma because it’s good but maybe we should also undertake a few big projects that enrich entire communities. A lot of people online say our group’s charity is just a cover for photo ops and shady deals between the wives of aristocrats. I would argue that they are wrong but last week madam Shan gifted the Winter Sun painting secretly to madam Go and this week madam Shan’s son was admitted to Beijing arts university where madam Go sits as a trustee on the board. It’s obvious that this was a bribe, madam Shan paid for that admission with an expensive ancient painting. These two women are not necessarily bad people because they donate to charity a lot and madam Shan even reads stories to children in Wukong hospital’s cancer ward secretly, she buys them toys and throws them parties but what she did is also not just. For her son to get into that university, an actual talented child from a normal household was pushed off the list. This is not the only kind of shady deal among the women in the high tea society and I have no plan to intervene in how things are done. The group was established for the madams of aristocratic families to help each other where necessary after all but while we help ourselves, let us help many others more."
Chi Lian could not hypocritically condemn these women when the old madam also used the connections of this society to kill Du Moxi’s endorsements. As soon as companies started shunning her, she was completely done. Maybe she could have made a come back using her voice and acting repentant but the word had already spread that she offended the high tea society.
Women in this group were not just wives of powerful men in the empire alone, it also included the queen dowager, crown princess, empress and the princess. Who could go near a person that might have offended royalty?
The old madam’s face held a hint of a frown and Chi Lian quickly said, "Grandma, you don’t have to make any decisions, just think about it. Hope foundation has constructed three domestic shelters so far and it’s being praised for it’s genuineness. We on the other hand are secretly condemned, people are afraid to point fingers but I discovered a hidden online page which has been posting about the high tea society in a negative light. Eventually, one fearless reporter will pick up this story and even though we can delete the articles online we can’t delete them from the people’s minds."
