Chapter 538: The end of a good conference
The last activity which would end the women’s conference soon started and it was open not only to the attendees of the conference but the public as well. For this reason, some CEO’S, particularly male ones made time to show up, visit booths and take many photographs. They wanted to prove that they were supportive of women in business to the public. It was just as He Weili said, chairman Jun was among those to show up and be open and loud. He praised more than a few ideas and inventions and at the end of the day, he even signed a contract on the spot and bought out one game from a female university student and her team.
Numerous pictures where taken of that signing and everyone was all smiles. What Chi Lian could not figure out is if it was real or Chairman Jun was just seeking attention from the media to hype Jun corporation.
It was around six in the evening when the conference was closed officially with a two minute speech from Chi Lian and another from the queen dowager who promised to set up a loan scheme designed to help impoverished women who were interested in business.
On a successful note, Chi Lian and the other women parted ways. She was driven to her family’s house by old tiger because she wanted to see her family before leaving for her long overdue honeymoon in two days.
Both of her parents and Chi Wei were home, watching the latest news on Phoenix television while mama Chi sliced some fruits for Su Manchu.
"Mother, father I am home." She announced her presence cheerfully.
Four heads turned in her direction, all of them with smiles that were eager to welcome her.
"My daughter." Mama Chi abandoned the fruit knife on a plate and got up to hug Chi Lian. "What is all this that you are carrying?" She asked when she noticed the bags in her hands.
"Watermelons from the orchid in pear park, they are all ripe so rather than selling them I decided to have them distributed to the old people in the town for free." They deserved something for putting up with all the construction noise and sudden influx of strangers into their town. This was a good way of buying some good will from them.
"Won’t they start expecting free fruits from you all the time now? Be careful with this kind of thing." Chi Wei was not on board with what she was doing.
Chi Lian shook her head, having thought this idea through thoroughly. She knew better than to give away free things easily now. "I made no plans to sell this season’s fruits because the park has just opened but next season I will sell them cheaply in the town or expensively to hotels and supermarkets. It will depend on how things go."
She sat down next to Su Manchu, Chi Wei’s bride of a few months. The two were very sweet to each other, projecting those newlywed vibes from their tactile behavior. They could not go a few seconds without holding hands, leaning on each other or gently touching each other’s back.
"Hi, sister-in-law." Manchu turned her attention away from Chi Wei briefly to greet Chi Lian.
"Hi, sister Manchu, how are you doing? Is my brother treating you well?" She asked even though she had the answer to that question.
Manchu nodded, "My husband is very good to me. So is mother-in-law and father-in-law, everyone is very nice."
Chi Lian’s eyes roamed over Manchu’s glowing face, the spark in her eyes she noticed was bright and she was cradling her lower abdomen.
"Sister Manchu, do you have good news to share? You can’t be glowing this much unless you do." Chi Lian teased slightly but her expression was partially serious.
"Oh!" Manchu was slightly stunned. "Does it show?" She asked Chi Wei.
Her body language could not have been more obvious and Chi Lian wondered if she should perhaps wait for Manchu to personally break the news but her mouth went ahead of her and she blurted out a question, "Are you pregnant?"
Chi Wei’s beaming face said yes before Manchu even responded with her mouth.
"It’s seven weeks now but we are not telling anyone because my mother said we should wait for the first trimester to pass. Sorry sister-in-law." Manchu crinkled her nose and held Chi Lian’s hand when she was apologizing.
Chi Lian held Manchu’s other hand and she smiled at her with excitement in her eyes. "Manchu, congratulations." She looked over at Chi Wei and repeated the same words. "You have been wanting this for so long, I am so happy for you."
Papa Chi who was smiling so broadly that his eyes were squeezed partially slapped his thigh twice and said, "Our Chi family is finally going to have a new generation. Next year a little Chi will be running around the house."
Now she could understand why her mother was treating Manchu like this, slicing fruits for her as if she had no arms of her own. Both of her parents were exhilarated at the aspect of becoming grandparents. This meant she would be an aunt soon and her children would have a cousin somewhat close in age to run around with.
Mama Chi came strolling in with two plates of sliced watermelon, one she gave to Chi Lian and the other to Manchu.
"Did you share the good news with Chi-Chi already?" She noticed their body language and suspected.
"She guessed mother-in-law." Manchu replied. "Sister-in-law is very good at observing this."
"I saw you cradling your belly belly, if you don’t want more people to know then you should avoid be so obvious. I will send old tiger over to bring you some good vitamins and other things to eat which are good for pregnant women. Will you continue working or take time off?" Chi Lian as always thought ahead of many things. She even thought about baby clothes, a crib and a nursery.
"Which hospital will you be giving birth from and who is your obstetrician? We need to make sure that both of these things are trusted and secure." She did not know if Chi Wei had shared the truth about how Mei-Mei and little monk came to be but after having met such an unscrupulous doctor who could sell eggs and babies, she realized that the oath to do harm was not respected by all doctors. For money, some could harm, kill and betray their patients that trusted them.
"She is going to the people’s memorial hospital, since your husband’s family owns a part of it we are sure that it can be trusted." Her father answered on behalf of Manchu.
"I will take time off work in my seventh or eighth month. I want to work for as long possible and finish as much of my work as I can before going for maternity leave." Manchu answered another one of Chi Lian’s questions.
Wen Yuesong’s pregnancy story crossed Chi Lian’s mind and she frowned a little. "Will your workmates be supportive? If anybody makes you feel uncomfortable just quit, you can work at any of our companies in any department of your choice. Do not feel the pressure to overwork yourself to prove a point. Think only of yourself and the baby." She touched Manchu’s belly gently and advised her. Indeed she had not lied at the conference when she said they all had something to learn from each other. She would also be making some changes in the company to make it a safe and comfortable working environment for pregnant women. No female employee in Phoenix should ever feel the desperation to terminate a pregnancy as a means to staying employed.
"Thank you sister-in-law, I will take care of myself." Manchu held Chi Lian’s hand and squeezed it gratefully.
Having visited, eaten something and received good news, Chi Lian went home. Her own husband had been sending her sad face emoticons for ten minutes.
