Chapter 526: A world of science

And just like that, in the blinking of an eye, the air transformed and the sweet breath of spring gave way to the warm cuddle of summer. The yellow sun in the sky above cast it’s golden rays powerfully on the earth seeming almost too harsh to be enjoyed. People got rid of their jackets and they donned the lightest outfits in their closets. There was a boost in the cold beverage business, hand held fans were in the hands of almost every shop owner as if the air provided by modern air conditioning was not enough. In this season, the flowers blossomed, blooming and filling the air with their fragrance. It was hot, but the heat was loved and welcomed more than any other season.

On this fine sunny day, a few ministers, the grand emperor and the prime minister were some of the important people who gathered in the cold town for the opening of two things. One was a scientific park which they had been assured would be the home of the greatest scientific discoveries in the world and two, a bridge across the cold river that connected the cold town to the capital. It shortened a two hour trip by forty minutes, there were many arguments about it’s importance by a few ministers but because it was privately funded, all arguments fell on deaf ears.

The pear scientific park was an actual park, with the exclusion of the large circular shaped buildings, it was filled with tall trees, flowers and orchards. There were little benches, roads, and even a few animals like squirrels and birds which had turned the park into their home.

It’s beauty was so breathtaking that a few people were traveling to take a look inside ever since it was featured in the Phoenix magazine. Unfortunately, it was private property and only employees or people with special access could get inside. This did not stop those that had bad intentions from trying to sneak in and steal whatever was inside.

These important visitors had been given a tour by Chi Lian and a female professor that Bear head hunted from Crimson University named Zhu Wen.

During the tour, one person in particular made a fuss, the mad genius Mujin who wanted to borrow the telescope until he was told that the astronomy lab on the upper floor belonged to Jun Mengze. When he learned about Jun Mengze’s identity, he looked at minister Su with grievances in his eyes. How could a two and a half year old boy own a lab with a telescope which should be used by the empire’s national space station. Did this make sense to anyone? Minister su simply shrugged, none of the things in here belonged to the empire. They were all private property and they had to request nicely if they wanted to use them. Like all the robots he had seen whose duty was to carry and clean things. Or the assimilation room whose technology superior to anything he had ever seen.

"I want a lab in here." Mujin informed Chi Lian.

"It can be discussed," Chi Lian told him "But you should also know the policy of Phoenix labs, we will fund all of your research but we own sixty percent of whatever it is." Some people would view this kind of contract as unfair but it was the policy. She was providing the money and tools, no matter how long the research took to bear fruits, she would pay the researcher a salary. It was justified that she reap the bigger portion of the fruits.

"You work for the empire Mujin, calm down." Minister Su reminded him.

"They have cutting edge technology, we will go further if we work with them." Mujin insisted.

"In that case," Chi Lian suggested, "We can enter into an understanding of sorts with the empire. In case you are interested please contact me minister Su."

"Doesn’t this fall into my department?" Another minister, the one who was in charge of technology asked.

"No, military related technology falls under the purview of the minister of defense. Even minister Su here can only intervene so much in the affairs of that department." The prime minister replied, amending all their wrong thinking.

Professor Zhu Wen halted the excited in her heart, military projects in the lab would raise their profile nationally and internationally. "We will be happy to have you Professor Mujin, a mind as talented as yours will thrive here in phoenix labs. Have I showed you the new prosthetics lab?" She led Mujin away by the hand.

Minister Su looked at the two very worried, and on his face was a small frown.

"What worries you?" Chi Lian asked him.

"Mujin is the kind of lunatic that will tender his resignation if he is charmed by your lab. Don’t get too excited however because we have no intention of letting him go."

Chi Lian shrugged, they would sort themselves out. "What do you think about my little lab minister Su?"

"I think there is nothing little about this place, the facilities are top notch, some of the research projects that you have allowed us to see are phenomenal. In your own words, this is a world of science, I think a lot of good will be done from here. You have already started fitting prosthetics on disabled orphaned children for free without advertising it. Every once in a while you do something that amazes me given how money minded you are."

"I will take that as a compliment." she replied. "I am considering charging the prosthetics at different prices. All the prosthetics are excellent but some are advanced. Others are modified beautifully, the equivalent of a form of plastic surgery. The money for operations on those orphaned children has to come from somewhere after all."

"Ah," minister smiled, "I knew there was a catch somewhere."

"There is always a catch minister Su, that’s how I found myself owning ten acres of land so close to the emperor’s lake." she smiled proudly. She traded treasures for a private manmade beach in the most expensive living area of the empire."

"You realize that there will be many eyes on this place?" The prime minister asked her. Pharmaceutical companies, research companies, enemy nations, the emperor himself. Anybody that wanted to get a piece of the money would be watching the lab like a vulture.

"That’s why I am formally requesting for the empire’s support. It would not be so bad if I have a few armed reserve soldiers guarding the park."

The prime minister smiled cordially and replied, "We will consider your request.

"We should probably take that picture now." the minister for technology who had been left out of the conversation for so long stepped in and suggested.

"Yes we should." Chi Lian agreed. It was about time to end the tour anyway.

This visit was being covered by only two NBTV and phoenix tv, even if other media houses cried foul, it was her lab hence her right to pick and choose which media had access to it.

The reporters had visited some of the labs which were not restricted and their cameras also followed the ministers closely during the visit. When Chi Lian posed with the ministers at the entrance to the lab, they snapped as many pictures as they could. From there, the ministers proceeded to do a little Q&A session while Chi Lian went back inside.

Just like the phoenix building, this one too had a number of lounges, one specifically on each floor. Right now, Muyang and the children were in the astronomy room, it was the only one with a lounge, a bathroom and a bed inside. She had prepared it like this in case little monk grew up someday and decided to study astronomy on his own as a career. Even if it was a hobby, he could spend his nights in the lab comfortably.

"It’s done." she entered the astronomy lab and announced. "Pear park is officially opened for business."
