Chapter 518: My devious husband
Chapter 518: My devious husband
The emperor’s speech was concluded and a female singer of folk music took to the stage, singing a song that was beloved by the older generation. With the speeches over, the stiff environment became somewhat freer. Conversations were launched among the people and interactions ensued. The foreign dignitaries went forward to greet the emperor, shake hands with him and take pictures. The princes and Princess too took part in this ritual, clearly very used to the proceedings as they needed no direction.
"Do we have to go infront and greet them too?" Chi Lian asked Muyang.
"No." he said softly, we can simply sit here and wait for directions to the buffet. Or servants can deliver our meals to us depending on one’s choice. Either way, if you are hungry you can now eat the snacks I am sure you managed to sneak in."
Chi Lian opened her mouth to deny but she just laughed in the end because it was undeniable. Muyang knew her too well and he also knew that no matter which bag she carried, she somehow managed to have something to eat, a drink, sweets and a toy, in there.
"Okay okay," she said in surrender, "You caught me, I have snacks in here."
Muyang pushed his body closer to her and he said, "Tell me something, how are you able to carry so many things in such a small bag?"
She stuck her tongue out at him playfully and whispered, "It’s my secret, I am not telling."
"Not even me!" He feigned shock.
"Mmm, in future I will share all my little secrets with you." She said after a few seconds of thought. "We should probably check on the children now, right?"
"What are you worried about? Your cousin Bolin is good with kids, if something was wrong we would have been called already." He assured her.
"We should have come with them, but I can understand the emperor’s decision on making this a child free occasion. Mei-Mei would have made a fuss and cried already if she had to sit still for three hours without eating or playing."
"And our son would have endured it until that moment when he crumbled like a soft cookie and started wailing abruptly." He added to her words.
"By the way, Wenzhe told me that you bought the company which was started by the husband of that rude woman from the mummy and me class. I forgot all about those people, what are your plans for it?"
"I am putting the company in Mengze’s name and keeping her husband on, since the wife called my children bastards she will have to bow before them for the rest of their lives if she wants her husband to continue making a living. You should see that couple now, they are meek like toothless tigers."
"Nice," Chi Lian complimented him, " You are more devious than I am, you called me petty for the crown thing but you are pettier." She laughed and shook her head. Truthfully, she was impressed with the way his mind worked, she would not have thought this far ahead. Usually she wanted her punishment to be meted out swiftly and instantly. Muyang, it seemed preferred to prolong the cruel punishment over time. It was not bad, being protected by this man.
The two were speaking alone with their heads close and their hands held together on Muyang’s legs. Occasionally Chi Lian would laugh and lean her head on his shoulder.
Cherry sneered in disbelief and she asked Ringo, " Do those two actually realize that there are cameras rolling. They are lost in a world of two, acting as if the rest of the world doesn’t exist."
"You sound jealous." Ringo commented. "Why, do you also want a man that holds your hand without a care in the world about time, place or appropriateness?"
"Yes." Cherry responded.
Ringo’s mouth fell open in surprise. He had been expecting her to say no or something else that was layered with sarcasm.
"What? You thought I would say no?" She asked him.
"Um, yes." He responded, then he laughed softly and put his right hand on his chin. "Every time I am with you I never fail to be surprised."
Cherry frowned and replied, "I may be a little bit nuts at times but I am just like any other woman my age. I want a relationship, I want to go on dates and be fed. Then I want to pout cutely and have someone rub the food smudges from my face. I want to go shopping and come out of the dressing room with someone nodding yes or no. I want to receive pink gardenias, my favorite flowers. I want to receive jewelry and other gifts with little notes reminding me of how beautiful I am or how much I am loved or appreciated."
"And what does the man that does all this for you get in return?" Ringo asked her.
"Me, he gets me. I will reciprocate the love and care I am given of course, just like them." She looked at Chi Lian and Muyang.
Ringo looked at them too and then his gaze moved back to Cherry that was watching them with envy in her eyes. On her face was a small smile, one of admiration and a bit of hope.
Ringo moved and blocked her view of his brother and his wife.
"Move." Cherry attempted to push his head away but he caught her hand and refused to let go when she attempted to retrieve it.
"Do you know that my sister-in-law wooed my brother?" He asked her.
Cherry looked doubtful, with the way Muyang loved Chi Lian, no way. "Eeeh, no way!" She responded dismissively. She even shook her head vehemently because that was how much she doubted his story.
"I am serious," Ringo came closer because the music was becoming louder. "She used to send flowers to his work place, house and the university. She would send him snacks and specially made sweets, he made a big fuss when I took one of those orange candies back then. I think she also initiated their first kiss. In the old days my brother would rather have died than associate with any woman. She was successful in winning him over because he gave her permission to woo him. You said you like men like me so I am giving you permission too, woo me."
Cherry rolled her eyes and she used her other hand to cover his face while laughing. "You want to be wooed, I also like being wooed." She informed him. "You should be the one to step up if you want me."
The emperor looked down from high on his seat where he could see clearly the first few rows. What he saw dumbfounded him so much and he turned to his empress and asked her, "What is wrong with the Jun’s? Look at the sons with their wives. Did they come for dates in my palace?"
"They are newly weds, what do you expect?" the empress replied. "Pay them no mind, Muyang’s wife worked hard to make us all look good today. All of our crowns and robes came from her, and Rize said that she almost lost her life to blood sucking bats finding that lost crown. We are lucky to have such citizens that love our empire so much."
The emperor looked at the empress with a little bit of pity. Only his wife would believe that mouse Chi almost lost her life in search for the lost crown. Moreover, she wanted to exchange those bones and whatever she found for land. She was a good citizen but a sneaky one, very sneaky.
"Princess," the emperor looked where Rize was supposed to be sitting so that he could share his small grievance about the Jun’s Unfortunately, his daughter had gone down to join her fiancé. He turned back to the empress and said with a sigh, "A grown girl really can’t be kept in the house. When did she lose her mind completely because of that boy?"
