Chapter 514: Ridiculous ministerial positions
The old master and the the rest of the men in the family escorted the royal butler to the car and bade him farewell. Chi Lian and the rest of the women stayed inside the house, looking at the brown envelope in her hands.
"Are you going to open it?" The old madam asked her.
"Not right now grandmother." She replied, "I have not exercised for three days now I am going to swim. I have never used the swimming pool in the house, it should be fun."
"Okay, I will ask the maids to bring you some refreshments and food. Don’t worry about these things," she pointed at the dresses and crowns which were being organized carefully under He Weili’s supervision. "I will take care of them until you need them."
"Alright, thank you grandmother." She hugged the old madam abruptly and started going upstairs to have a quick bath before going to swim. She could hear the old madam still speaking and giving out orders.
"Take the children for their bath, Rose come and help me in the kitchen. I will teach you how to prepare your grandfather’s favorite rice pudding. But why do you want to learn anyway?"
Cherry hurried to follow Chi Lian," Younger sister-in-law do you need company? I too enjoy swimming."
"Sure, let’s meet in ten minutes." Chi Lian told her. And then she continued on her way to the bedroom where she showered and grabbed a towel and a swimming costume. She would change from there, just because the swimming pool was in the house did not mean she could parade around the house in a swimming costume. On the way to the pool, she bumped into Muyang who said he was coming to join her. With a smile on her face, Chi Lian hummed until she reached the swimming pool in a separate part of the house. It was actually more like a pool house because it was attached to the house since you went through a long corridor to get to it but it was also a bit outside of the house. In a way the corridor was like a bridge connecting the pool house to the main house. Cherry was already there, sitting on the edge of the pool with her legs dipped in the water.
"You are here finally." Cherry said, "You didn’t change from the bedroom?" She said in a voice that told Chi Lian that Cherry was curious.
"I didn’t want to walk around the house with my long legs exposed." Chi Lian replied.
"Ho," Cherry laughed, " Did you have to mention the length of your legs?"
"They are my best feature, it would be a shame not to show them off."
"That’s true," Cherry responded and she waited for Chi Lian to change in the bathroom and come out. "You know that you could have put on the costume underneath a long free dress and simply taken the dress off from here."
"Ah!" Chi Lian slapped her forehead lightly, "Why didn’t I think of that?"
"You came with the envelope I noticed." Cherry pointed her mouth at the envelope lying on the pool side chair.
"I will open it after swimming," Chi Lian twirled her leg and then she jumped into the pool with a scream. There was a big splash of water and she raised her head up at once, throwing her long hair backwards.
Cherry laughed and she also jumped into the swimming pool gently as compared to Chi Lian.
They took turns challenging each other in different strokes and competing in turns of speed.
Twenty minutes later, Muyang and Muchen joined them. They were dressed in bathrobes which they took off and remained in swimming trunks. One after the other, they jumped into the water competitively swimming immediately. The women were forced to leave the unassigned middle lanes for the men. Ten laps later, both men relaxed and tapped their hands together in a high five.
"We have not done that in two years." Ringo laughed.
"Because I always beat you." Muyang replied.
"You are so delusional little brother." Ringo replied.
"How about a little men vs women competition." Cherry proposed. "I bet the two of us can beat you."
"We don’t have a judge, maybe it should be you vs your husband. I will monitor and keep score." Chi Lian suggested.
"I am in." Cherry was quick to respond and she looked at Ringo with a challenge in her eyes. "Can you take the heat?"
Ringo laughed and run his hands through his hair. "Bring it on."
No one knew where Chi Lian got the whistle from but she stepped out of the swimming pool, whistled and the competition was on. Both Ringo and Cherry took it so seriously that it took twelve rounds to force them to stop.
"Ringo won seven out the twelve rounds so he wins." Chi Lian announced.
"I can keep going." Cherry announced.
"Why are you so competitive?" He asked her.
"I grew up with more than two dozen brothers and uncles. Everything is a competition in my family." She replied.
"Three brothers and I got princess treatment." Chi Lian pointed at herself. Then she swam toward Muyang, went around his back and tried to dunk his head in the water playfully. A new game ensued between husband and wife trying to dunking each other.
Cherry looked at Ringo and she laughed before attempting to recreate Chi Lian’s results. Ringo grabbed her around the waist and she failed in her attempt. One hour later, play time was over and four people were gathered around small tables with the pool chairs rearranged in a circular manner. They were eating food and enjoying the cocktails which had apparently been mixed by the butler.
Chi Lian finally opened the brown envelope and took out one piece of paper.
Cherry was so curious that she immediately asked what it was.
"My brother is marrying the princess and the emperor wants him to take an official position."
"What position?" Ringo asked her.
Chi Lian laughed and said, "The most ridiculous ministerial positions I have ever heard about. Listen to this, Minister for happiness."
Cherry laughed, Muyang guffawed and Ringo coughed because his drink almost choked him.
"I am not done, Minister for human rights."
"Eeeh," Muyang said and he moved his head left and right.
"Minister for life conservation." Chi Lian said.
"What the hell is that?" Ringo asked.
"Minister for the royal office." Chi Lian read, "Minister for animal rights, Minister for lost culture, Minister for foreign trade and attractions and last on the list, Minister without portfolio."
"So, do the animals get to vote him since he is representing their rights?" Ringo chuckled.
"Minister without portfolio could work." Cherry said. "He does nothing at all but he earns a minister’s salary and wields the power and influence of that office like any other Minister in the empire."
"He does nothing so he will be disrespected," Ringo wagged his finger slowly, " As Minister for the royal office he will be dragged into palace politics. Foreign trade and attractions is also dangerous because he will be used by many people with hidden agendas."
"Life conservation makes zero sense." Muyang added.
Chi Lian looked at the paper and said, "That leaves human rights and lost culture."
"Well," Cherry said, "Maybe it was no coincidence that you discovered the lost bones of an ancient empress. It could propel him into a successful career as Minister for lost culture."
Chi Lian could see the chests of jewelry waving goodbye and she shook her head, " Isn’t a minister for human rights respected more?"
