Chapter 489: Grandpa Wang’s schemes.
Someone else that had troubles was Chi Wei. He went away to the army base to get away from women, train his body, find some solace and get his mind right. However right from the first day when he joined the capital base, one woman had stuck to herself to him like glue. Every morning when they were running as a group, she would coincidentally end up running next to him. During meals she would coincidentally be sitting opposite him. When he was training alone she would show up to train as well. When partners were being assigned for various activities she would miraculously end up being assigned as his partner. Either the universe was trying to send him some signals or he was standing in the midst of a very big conspiracy. Chi Wei was suspicious, the only thing that held him back from rebuking her was the fact that she hardly said anything to him apart from a greeting or a nod of acknowledgement here and there.
She never even introduced herself to him, he learned her name from a soldier, she was called Su Manchu. From what he had gathered so far, she was a daughter of the Su family, the minister of state for security was her cousin. He wondered often why the daughter of a wealthy family chose to join the army, but he had seen her fight many times and she was quite skilled. If he had not taken that serum which his sister made old tiger give him she would have kicked his ass many times over.
Chi Wei had just got out of one relationship and he did not think that he was ready for another one so soon but the proximity between himself and Su Manchu had caused him to think about her quite often. He even knew some of her eating habits now, like how she hated peppers of all kinds, whether they were red, green, yellow or orange. She could not stand them and she separated them from her food during meals. She had this routine where she would take three bites of food and one sip of water consistently in that order. One time he was tempted to ask her why she did it but she walked away before he could say anything. It puzzled him really why she was close to him but also far at the same time.
They were having breakfast and as usual she was sitting directly opposite of him, ’one, two, three’ he counted each spoon of porridge that she ate.
"I..." he suddenly said, "I am Chi Wei." the words came out of his mouth rapidly. It was almost as if he could hardly hold them back.
She stared at him blankly, put down her spoon and wiped her mouth, then picked up her tray and walked away without responding.
Chi Wei’s heart was beating fast from a nervousness which filled him out of nowhere.
"Aish," he whispered, "What was that?" He was even more confused because he could not tell if his self introduction was what prompted her to walk away.
"Brother Wei," one of the few friends he had made in the army rubbed his shoulder, "Don’t worry about Manchu, she is cold at first but when you get to know her she is a very warm and sweet girl. Manchu is the type of person who will have your back no matter what. If you want to hit on that beauty however, you should know that you have some strong competition. Look at all the soldiers that are glaring at you."
Chi Wei looked around and noticed a few unhappy faces so he picked up his own tray and stood up to leave. ’I am not hitting on her." he said strongly. He was simply being friendly.
"Right." his friend looked like he did not believe him at all. "You are not hitting on her." he raised a thumb up and winked.
"I really am not." Chi Wei emphasized.
"I believe you." his friend winked again and laughed.
Seeing that this was going nowhere Chi Wei gave up on defending himself. A few minutes later he was called because he had a visitor. Rushing to the main office, he saw his sister standing next to an army green car, a few soldiers were surrounding her and they were laughing.
"Uncle." Mei-Mei saw him first and she waved.
Chi Wei waved his hand and he smiled, hurrying over to hug his sister and the two little children.
"Sis, I have missed you." he said happily.
The other soldiers excused themselves and they were left to speak alone, privately.
"You cut off your hair." Chi Lian commented. He did not have long hair before but he had a head full of it. Now, he was sporting a buzzcut. Dressed in a green shirt and army green camouflage pants he looked like every other soldier on the base. "Have you embraced the military life fully."
"Haha," he laughed and he rubbed his head on his head, "When in Rome, do as the Romans do. I will be back after one month but grandpa was right, I feel better every passing day. He was also right about Jian Yu, we were not right for each other in the first place, I just didn’t see it at the time."
"Uncle hug." little Monk requested.
"En." Chi Wei carried him and then he carried Mei-Mei too before she could request to be carried. "Sis who is this?" he asked. The girl was standing next to his sister and looking at him shyly.
"This is Rose, she is your niece too, the daughter of a friend of mine." Chi Lian held Rose and she told her, "This is my eldest brother Chi Wei, you can call him uncle."
Rose nodded and she said, "Hello uncle."
"Oh, hello Rose." Chi Wei responded. "I will give you a red envelope the next time we meet."
"How are things here? Are you taking care of yourself?" Chi Lian asked him. He appeared to have lost some weight.
"I am, I have even made some good friends, when I leave I will keep in touch with them."
Chi Lian stood on tip toe and tried to rub his head, so he bent his head down and she did as she pleased. "Well at least you are happy, I was so worried when you left for the army base without saying good bye to me at all. But you should know that Jian Yu still works for us, you know me however, family comes first so tell me if you want her gone. I have a meeting with the president of glory entertainment tomorrow. It will be easy for me to transfer her over to them. It’s a bigger company than ours and she will be fine with them."
"No, that’s unnecessary, truth be told I have hardly thought about her since I came here. The other day her movie was playing on the screen and I was not bothered at all. That’s why I said that grandpa was right when he said we were not right for each other."
She was relieved, her brother was truly healing, the wisdom of the elderly was indeed not a myth.
"Oh, I brought you gifts from America but most of them can’t be used in the base so you will find them at home."
As they conversed, Su Manchu and a friend of hers, another female soldier were peeping at them from a distance.
"Su-Su, you might have to give up on your crush, he has a wife and children." her friend said.
"That’s his sister, grandpa Wang already showed my father and I their entire family tree." Su Manchu replied. Unlike the cold demeanor that she usually portrayed around him, she was staring at Chi Wei with stars in her eyes from over here.
"His grandfather is really tactful, matchmaking from an army base." Manchu’s friend said in wonder. "At least he is handsome."
"Of course he is, my Manchu’s future husband must be handsome, that’s my first rule. I think the strategy his grandfather gave me is working, Chi Wei is going to be mine."
