Chapter 463: What is marriage?
She was on the phone with Muyang until he left to give his speech. Because it was being shown live on television, T4 was able to access it and she watched part of it while eating ice cream and chips. Eventually, she fell asleep during the question and answer part.
The sun rose and morning came with it, the first thing she did was hit the gym and work out intensely for an hour. Twenty minutes into her work out Ximeng and the models arrived to do yoga and stretch. While she lifted weights like a body builder, they gently stretched their limbs like swans. Wenli that had come to run on a treadmill laughed at this scene.
After working out and having breakfast she gave Wenli the cream to deliver to Mrs. Smith as she escorted the models for the last photoshoot. when they were gone she set up microphones and recording equipment outside the house in the Zen garden and told CindyxRella and Ling Ling to practice the new song whose video they would be shooting tonight.
With all preparations in place Ian showed up with a well known music video director and an entire crew with equipment to set up while they went shopping.
Even if she did not need it, she bought jewelry for herself and her family, bags, perfumes and cute Pokémon designed winter coats for the children.
In their fifth shop, Ian sat down in a chair with a very grumpy look on his face. "You have turned me into your official servant." He complained. He was holding at least five shopping bags in each hand and none of the items bought were his. This reminded him so much of shopping with his mother.
"I can buy you lunch." She offered. "And I will give you a gift after we return to the house. In fact, it’s coming to midday, perhaps we should return right now so that I can give you the gift.
He looked at her suspiciously, eyeing her from the corner of his right eye. "Are you sure that you are not trying to trick me into transporting all this for you?"
"You were my ride here, of course you have to transport me and my shopping back to the house. But I sincerely have a gift for you because I want to thank you for all the time you have spent helping me out on this trip." she answered.
"You still have to provide my lunch." he mentioned as they got back into the car.
"Definitely." she answered.
As he drove they talked about other random things. "We saw your husband on World wide news last night, the fact that he was the youngest key note speaker at that forum was highly emphasized by the news anchor."
"My husband is so eloquent." she replied. "He looked so dashing in that black suit up there on the podium. I really married the best looking man in the world." she spoke so proudly when she talked about Muyang. Her eyes always lit up and she would smile as if she was lost in a wonderful dream.
"Is marriage that great?" Ian asked her. "I have met too many unhappy couples to be convinced that it’s a bed of roses."
"Your parents have a great marriage." she answered. From all the research and what she had witnessed physically the Smiths were very happy together. Could her judgement have been wrong?
"My parents have their good days and bad days, mostly good. But my great grandfather fell in love with a mermaid, my grandfather fell in love and had an affair with a woman half his age when he was fifty and my older brother once dated a married woman in his early twenties. If her husband had not threatened to go public and shame the Smith name he would probably be married to her now and miserable."
"I don’t know what to say to you right now." she told him honestly.
"I don’t think I want you to either." he replied. "I just see how happy you are and I think I want that for myself but given the history of infidelity’s in my family...."
"Has your father cheated?"
"No." Ian answered immediately.
"There you go, instead of dwelling on your grandfather and his father’s actions look at those of your father and mother. Maybe your great grandfather was ill, and your grandfather I don’t think anyone could witness what he did without being affected at all. Your older brother is not the first young man to fall in love with a beautiful, married older woman, it’s a lot more common than we like to admit. He should have controlled his lust and stayed away from her, you said it yourself if he had married her he would have been miserable. Marriage is something that happens when two people desire it and choose it. Every morning when I wake up I choose my husband, I choose to make him happy, I choose to love him and he chooses me similarly in all these ways and more. On the good days and bad days we choose to be each other’s anchor. When you make that choice be ready to continue making it everyday." To Chi Lian everyone had their opinion on what marriage was and to her it was a choice. She chose to fall in love with Muyang, to marry him, to raise a family together until death parted them. She felt as if she had said a lot but she needed him to understand that marriage was a choice and if he wanted it, he could make it.
"A choice," he said and laughed dryly.
"Yes, there is that line from a movie which says we choose our easy or hard. Marriage is both easy and hard, nobody should ever tell you that its only one or the other. But to me it’s a good thing because being alone is lonely and hard, I have experienced it. However if you do not feel ready don’t force yourself to go for marriage. Do what makes you happy."
They arrived at the house and he parked the car, allowing the maids to take the bags inside while Chi Lian went upstairs to bring his gift.
When she returned she gave him a scroll that he opened. "It’s a painting." he said , truly marveled by the beauty of the ancient trees and mountains..
"Yes, a landscape painting by Li Tang, if anybody asks you bought it a private auction. When you mentioned that you love paintings I recalled that I had this stored in my luggage somewhere. Take very good care of it." It was one of the many ill gotten items of the dead Prince Long Genghis.
Ian hugged her abruptly for she was not expecting it. "Thank you." he said. "I think you are shooting for the position of my closest friend. I will but one hundred copies of your magazine when it’s printed."
"I will email you as soon as it’s released." she said and laughed. "Prepare your credit card to make the payment on that day."
"If I lie I go to hell." he said and she pushed him away so that she could laugh properly.
"By the way you have officially arrived at the restaurant where we are having that lunch which I promised you." she spread her arms out and looked left and right. "Tada." she said while laughing again.
"I knew you were making me come back for a reason." Ian hissed at her dramatically.
"Mistress, the neighbor next door would like to talk to you." Butler Davies approached them and informed her.
