Chapter 397: No more blind dates

"Well I forbid you from moving to that kingdom, try it and I will drag you back your tail like a cat." The old madam threatened.

Chi Lian snickered because she imagined the old madam dragging him back like a misbehaving cat.

Triplet one exhaled thankfully when his grandmother moved away from him and she directed her next words at his other brother.

"You," she looked fiercely at number two, "You showed up to your blind date with another date on your arm. You told the poor girl that you wanted a polygamous marriage."

And you, she turned the look on number three "I cannot even describe what you did on all those six blind dates that you are bragging about. "You went for a speed dating event not a blind date. I told you to sit with one girl for just one hour and instead you chose six girls to meet you at the same time and each of them was given twenty seconds to talk about themselves."

She looked at all three grandsons and said, "If the three of you are going to keep acting like this then stop going on the dates instead of embarrassing me out there. I am the one the mothers of all those girls call to complain and I have had it up to here, from today no blind dates." she declared. She would have kept going but it was breakfast time.

The chef and some maids brought in teas, foods, snacks, juice and placed it all around on the table. One thing that Chi Lian had observed in the Jun house is that when the maids were finished serving a meal to the family, they walked backwards like palace eunuchs in television dramas and only turned around when they were at the door.

These aristocratic families were really different, their maids were certainly extremely well trained.

She was about to touch the eggs when she noticed that nobody was moving a hand so she held herself back.

"What’s going on?" she asked herself.

She observed that old master Jun picked up his chop sticks first and then he said, "Let’s eat."

"Oh my God!!!!" Chi Lian screamed in her mind. No wonder her grandmother had hired a teacher to teach her all that etiquette on these families. In their house, everyone went for their food as they wished. Nobody waited for her father to touch the plate first.

She was sure that her grandparents knew about this kind of etiquette but it had never been introduced to their family. Even the old master and his wife never behaved this way in their house.

Had they been looking at their Chi family with disapproval during meal times? Was it a when in Rome do as Romans do situations? Many ridiculous thoughts crossed her mind.

"This must be how those poor women feel when they marry into such families." T4 commented. "I am always watching those dramas with you and this is exactly how it is. The poor new bride struggles to match her behavior with that of her cultured and rich disapproving in-laws."

"I am not poor and my in-laws approve of me highly." she answered.

"Thank you for the meal." people around the table answered.

Quickly she added her voice to the response to theirs before finding herself as the odd man out.

"Is this winter melon soup?" the old madam asked.

"Yes," the chef who was standing to the side replied. He had to be there to get rid of any dish that did not meet the approval of the old madam and old master.

"The new young miss brought some high end vegetables including the winter melons and the young master asked us to make winter melon soup." he explained.

"It’s tastes wonderful." the old madam nodded and approved. "Boil some with sugar later on make a winter melon syrup for the children."

"Yes old madam."

"You can all be excused now." The old master told the chef.

He along with the chief housekeeper and two maids that were still in the dining room excused themselves.

What followed next was a silent but enjoyable breakfast. The loudest sounds at the table were chop sticks hitting a plate and Mei-Mei sucking milk out of a bottle loudly. Occasionally, she would stop sucking and open her little mouth them the old madam would feed her some fried eggs or a small pinch of cake.

Little monk was similarly being fed by the old master only he was eating normally unlike his sister who was acting like a baby.

"Umm, mother the winter melon soup is actually better than I expected." He Weili commented.

"That’s because my grand daughter-in-law has the best source for the tastiest foods in the empire." the old madam bragged.

"Have you ever considered opening a restaurant?" Muyang’s father directed this question to Chi Lian.

She could have sworn that he asked her this exact question once before.

"She has her hands full." Muyang replied.

Chi Lian kicked him under the table, why was he answering for her as though she had no mouth or thoughts of her own?

"No, father-in-law," she answered, "I do not have such plans right now. If I can grow some of my crops on large scale then I might consider becoming a raw foods distributor."

Muyang’s father nodded and he went back to his food.

Break fast in the Jun family was a somewhat cheerful affair but in the Chi family, it was a somber affair. Rize had returned to the royal palace early in the morning, Zimo had gone to the tea shop and Chi Wei and Chi Rui were sleeping in.

Mama Chi was sitting at the over sized dining table with her husband. It was just them two and it was lonely.

Mama Chi could not stop sighing. She was suffering from empty nest syndrome despite her nest not being empty.

"My wife, children leave the nest, it happens." her husband said.

"Our nest is empty now, look around you, we are in this big house silent house with three sons but it feels as if we are alone. I could hardly pass by the children’s room without breaking down." she explained to him.

Papa Chi understood her situation because he was similarly in the same boat.

"Maybe we should take a vacation after the festivities. Winter has come to an end and we can go anywhere in the spring."

Mama Chi sighed and she put her head down on the table.

"We can go and see that London bridge, or the beaches in Greece. We can also take a tour of those ancient churches in the Vatican."

Mama Chi rolled her eyes and asked her husband, "Are you just mentioning things from a travel brochure."

Papa Chi smiled like a silly dog caught stealing a piece of meat.

"I met someone distributing one of the flyers one week ago. I kept it because we can now afford to travel even if it’s just for a week."

A series of barks and ’No’s’ coming from the entrance of the door made them stand up and go to take a look. Why did it sound as if a fight was about to break out between the dogs and the butler.
