Chapter 331: A deal with Dai Zhangye

He was almost a middle aged man now, way older than he was when he went into prison. All of his youth was gone, having spent the entirety of it within these walls. There were traces of silver in his hair and wrinkles on his forehead.

Time, life and prison had taken its toll on him. Despite all this, his physique was still impressive, it seemed like he still kept up the habit of training his body even in prison.

He was roughly forced to sit down across from her by the guard who brought him in. As he did so, the handcuffs on holding his hands together forcefully jingled like a dozen metallic bracelets being banged together.

"Take the handcuffs off." She told the guard.

The guard looked at her with disdain and answered, "Ma’am, this prison is home to thousands of the most dangerous criminals in this empire, prisoner 10082 inclusive. As long as he is out of his cell, the handcuffs stay on."

Once he said that, he stood in the corner and made no attempt to leave.

Chi Lian scoffed because she was extremely infuriated. Did these people know nothing about client attorney privileges?

She could feel Dai Zhangye staring at her intensely but for now she ignored him and gave all of her attention to the guard. "Sir, this is a private meeting between me and my client and you cannot be here."

"Hmph," the guard responded.

Chi Lian was not one to play and she took her phone out of her briefcase and dialed a number. As it rung, she said to the guard, "I am calling the police and reporting you for abuse of the empire’s law which gives a right to privacy between a client and an attorney. Once the police come and take you in for questioning, I will make it a point to dig into all of your activities inside and outside of this prison. I am sure I will find something and however small it is, I will work extra hard to see to it that you end up in this same prison. I wonder how much fun you will have rooming with these thousands of dangerous criminals as you have said. I don’t think they will be so kind to you."

The prison guard glared at her maliciously but her threat worked and he removed himself from the room.

"There is no bug or listening device of any kind host." T4 informed her.

Satisfied that they were well and truly alone except for the camera, she gave her attention to her client.

"Mr. Dai," she said.

"You are not a lawyer, are you?" he interrupted her with a question.

"What makes you say that?" she asked in return.

"Ma’am, no offense but when lawyers talk, they like showing off. When they are making a point, they will quote the actual law and sometimes they give examples of a similar crime and its consequences. Your go to was calling the police and making a general statement." He told her his observations and looked at her with a hint of cruelty in his eyes. "Who are you?"

"I am your lawyer." She deadpanned.

"I have not signed any paperwork designating you as my lawyer; you are here for something else. The quicker you open your mouth and say it, the faster this will move along."

He spoke articulately, quite sure of himself in a way that surprised her. Such a person usually responded to honesty with honesty. She would not be able to get far with him if she used deception; he had been trained to detect it.

She put her arms forward on the table and pulled her body close to say, "You are right, I am not a lawyer but I am someone who can afford to hire the most expensive lawyer for you. In fact, with one phone call I can have you pardoned and out of this prison today itself if I wished."

She was not shooting her mouth off randomly; she had a direct line of contact to the one man who could pardon Dai Zhangye.

Dai Zhangye chuckled and said, "There is only one person who can grant a pardon in this empire."

"Like I said, with one phone call I can change your life; however nothing is free of charge in life. I am not here to hand you such a big gift on a silver platter, I need something in exchange." she replied while exuding confidence.

Dai Zhangye scoffed and placed his hands behind his head. She noticed that he had a wolf tattoo on the inside of his bicep.

He hurried to put his hands down when he saw her looking at it.

"Do you know how many times people have tried to kill me in here?" he asked her. "Dozens, hundreds, thousands, I have lost count. For all I know, you could be sent here by my enemies to trap me. A man like me trusts nobody in this world and I have no reason to trust you. You are wasting your time with me, so thank you but I don’t need your help."

He sounded as if he was finished with her and he was ready to leave.

"Is that why you are appealing? Did someone come too close in the attempt this time? For over twenty years you have lived in this prison, always in solitary confinement. Every attempt on your life has been physical, never an obvious one like poison. I am guessing you have something you are holding over whoever you have been hiding from in here. If you survived a poison attempt you could easily detonate whatever bomb you have on them out of anger however a physical attack can easily be denied because people make enemies in prison.

The frequency of the attacks has increased lately so you want out of this place probably because you don’t feel safe within these walls anymore.

I am here to be your safety line Mr. Zhangye, if what you have is connected to the doctor Li Mo and his associates then we could be on the same page."

"You have something against the doctor." Zhangye was taken aback by her openness.

"And his associates." She emphasized. "I know that you were assigned to guard him for a while and a few weeks later your whole life turned to shit. My instincts have never once failed me and they say you know something."

Dai Zhangye rolled his mouth around as he contemplated upon her words.

She knew that he was still distrusting of her so she reminded him, "Your appeal has put you in a very dangerous position Mr. Dai. I am quite sure that if you do not die within these walls within two days, you will die on your way to court. To a person with something to hide, the only good keeper of their secret is a dead one. You need to die Dai Zhangye." She said seriously.

His nostrils flared and his eyes turned hostile at her last words so she continued to say.

"The difference between whoever is after your life and I is that if they kill you, you will die for real. But if I kill you, you will be resurrected; I will get you a new face, money and a new identity."

Her words piqued his curiosity and hostility went down a notch. "All this for what I know?" he asked curiously.

She nodded and said, "The enemy of my enemy is my friend. Right now, your enemy is my enemy and while you may not be able to deal with them, I can." She said this bravely with confidence. "I have been assigned by the universe to be your guardian angel, make a deal with me if you want to live Mr. Dai."
