Chapter 307: Toddler teeth as currency

The first group of people to taste the soy milk was the children in the play room. When she delivered the milk along with the maids, Mei-Mei who was looking adorable in her red dress insisted that she be carried out.

"Don’t you want to play with your friends?" she asked.

"Want mummy." Mei-Mei answered, holding on to her legs and refusing to let go.

Chi Lian picked the girl up and looked at little monk who was sitting with Fu Jui, dismantling a new toy that Chi Wei had given him.

"Baby, do you want to follow me too?" she asked.

Little monk looked at her, and then he looked at his new friend and the toy. "No." he replied.

"Okay," she replied, "If you want to find me tell the nanny to bring you to the parlor or the living room."

As she was walking away, the youngest prince shouted, ’Auntie, wait for me."

He came running to catch up with her. In his hands was a plastic glass of sweet soy milk with a straw.

"Slow down." She told him when he caught up. "If you run around with drinks you will spill and someone could slip and fall."

"Sorry auntie." He replied. This apology was accompanied by a big smile and she noticed that he had a missing tooth.

"Oh, my prince, you lost a tooth." She said.

"Yes." He opened his mouth widely to make sure that she could view the gap properly. "Grandma said that I am going to be rich because of my missing tooth. Auntie, does it mean that every time I want money for a new toy I should just take a tooth out?" he asked her with that hopeless curiosity of a child.

"No, if you want money you can ask your father." She answered while laughing loudly. Since when were toddlers milk teeth a currency?

"Father says money must be earned." He replied with a cute pout.

Chi Lian giggled as she was lost for words. What could she possibly say? She could not say that the emperor was wrong for he was right, money must be earned.

"Auntie what kind of milk is this?" he asked.

"Soy milk." She replied.

"Auntie what is soy?" he asked.

"Are you always this curious about everything?" she asked. He had questions about everything.

"Royal grandmother said that I should be like a sponge, I should soak in knowledge like it soaks in water." He replied informatively.

They arrived at the parlor and she went inside with the young prince walking behind her like a little tail.

The soy milk had already been delivered and placed around the long table in the room. The guests were already helping themselves to it.

"Auntie, I like coming to your house because everything here is sweeter than the things in the palace. I am going to live here with Mei-Mei forever." The young prince declared loudly.

Loudly, he sipped his soy milk joyfully and licked his mouth with glee.

Those who were close and heard his innocent words laughed. Others who were previously not interested in drinking soy milk were tempted to taste it and they picked up a glass immediately.

Of course, once they had the first sip, they fell in love with the taste and simply had to have more.

In the meantime, Chi Lian’s eyes were roaming around the room in search of her mother and she quickly found her. She was sitting with Muyang’s mother and to her other side was the matriarch of the Wang family, holding her mother’s hand affectionately.

How and why had this happened so quickly she wondered? Just where were her brothers who were supposed to be close by?

"Host your brothers are in the living room along with Muyang, his brothers and most of the younger crowd. As you have noticed, most of the people in here are the probably forty and above. "T4 said to her.

She noticed that her mother was waving her over so she slowly walked over to her with a forced smile on her face.

"Chi-Chi," her mother said with a smile on her face, "Come and meet Madam An, she has been looking forward to meeting you and Mei-Mei."

Her eyes could not resist moving over to Madam An slightly and in her head she quickly realized that if her mother was calling the woman Madam An then she had not been given any emotionally turbulent information like who she actually was.

She smiled and bowed slightly, "Hello, Madam An, I am Chi Lian, it’s so nice to meet you."

Madam An responded with a bright smile on her face, "Chi-Chi, don’t call me Madam An, call me grandma."

She was looking at Chi Lian with this affection and longing in her eyes.

"Eh..." Chi Lian said. Her eyes moved to her mother with questions and plenty of puzzles.

"Go on Chi-Chi, just call her grandmother, she is going to insist on it." Muyang’s mother said.

"Grandmother," Chi Lian called madam Wang softly and to her surprise, an abrupt tear rolled down the older woman’s eyes.

"What’s wrong?" Chi Lian asked as if she was puzzled.

Another voice also asked the same question, a male voice which belongs to Wang Shiqing. He had been standing opposite Chi Lian for a few seconds.

"Wife, why are you crying?" he asked. There was an obvious hint of worry and concern in his voice for his wife.

Madam Wang wiped the tears away with a smile on her face which had stayed on the entire time as if it had been stamped into her face.

"Don’t mind me, I am just overly sensitive lately." She replied. "Chi-Chi called me grandmother and I became so emotional." She reached out and grabbed Chi Lian’s hand. "Girl, I hope I have not made you uncomfortable at all." She said.

Chi Lian shook her head and answered, "I am not uncomfortable at all."

"Mummy milk." Mei-Mei who had been ignored this whole time demanded. Her hand was pointing at the glasses of soy milk on the table.

"Mummy." Madam An said with shock in her voice.

"Yes, this is my daughter." Chi Lian told her. "I have a son too, they are twins."

Muyang’s mother stood up, poured a little milk for Mei-Mei in a plastic glass and gave it to Mei-Mei.

In the meantime, Chi Lian was wondering why Madam An was shocked about her having children, It was public news. Did the Wang family tradition of staying away from people in the media and show biz keep them this disconnected from ordinary news?

"So I am a great-grandmother." Madam An whispered and sniveled, the tears which had just been wiped returned once more.

The women close by looked at each other with wonder in their eyes. What was wrong with Madam An, they wondered.

"Wife, calm down."

"What is her name?" Ignoring her husband’s words, Madam An kept her overly affectionate gaze on Mei-Mei who was dipping her tongue in the milk glass playfully.

"Jun Meiyang but we call her Mei-Mei."

"She is so pretty," Madam An said. "Mei-Mei, come and sit with great grandmother." She called eagerly.
