Chapter 293: Mothers and daughters

In the kitchen, mama Chi sent all the maids and the chef out. Only she, Chi Lian and Mei-Mei were left in a tense situation.

Chi Lian’s head was bowed down and nervously she was clutching at her pants. She wanted to say something but she was scared, unsure of what to say first and worried that she could say the wrong thing.

She also didn’t want to see any signs of disappointment or anger toward her on her mother’s face. It would kill her to see that.

"Why aren’t you looking at me?" Mama Chi asked.

"Because, you are mad at me." Chi Lian blurted out in a tearful voice. "I just wanted to protect you mother, I had no intention of hurting you, I am sorry." She finished with tears misting over her eyes.

"Oh for God’s sake!" Mama Chi exclaimed.

Chi Lian felt herself being pulled into her mother’s embrace. Quickly, she wrapped her arms around her mother’s waist and cried, "Mother," "wuwuwuuuu," she cried, " mother, don’t be angry with me."

"Why are you being so dramatic?" mama Chi asked. "Who told you that I was angry with you?"

Chi Lian sobbed softly and replied, "You ignored me in the living room and you didn’t talk to me when you left the hospital."

"Did I talk to anyone?" Mama Chi asked her.

Chi Lian thought about it, and truly from the hospital, mama Chi spoke to no one. She did not even talk to their father, not even when he was escorting her upstairs to their bedroom. Indeed, she had over thought that situation and blown it out of proportion in her mind.

"But just now in the living room..." Chi Lian replied.

"You wanted me to discuss how I am feeling in front of the elders? Do you think I am that much of a chatterbox? My feelings are mine to deal with. You and your brothers will not understand how I am feeling even though I explain it to you.

Dealing with how I am feeling is my issue not yours to fix. I am sorry if I made you feel terrible for wanting to protect me. A mother should protect her child; it should not be the other way round." Mama Chi responded.

She was shedding a few tears of her own, feeling guilty because she had made her daughter cry.

The two women had forgotten about Mei-Mei who they were squeezing in between their bodies in the embrace.

The little girl made her discomfort known by letting out a loud cry which forced mother and daughter to separate.

Mama Chi quickly abandoned her daughter in preference of her granddaughter. "My beautiful granddaughter why are you crying?" She asked as she cooed Mei-Mei and bounced her in her arms.

"Maybe we squeezed her too hard." Chi Lian suggested.

There was a knock on the door and Old Tiger came in and stared at Chi Lian. He looked like he had something to say but he was unsure whether to say it outright or not.

"What is it?" Chi Lian asked him.

"Boss," old tiger replied, "Those guests that you have been expecting have arrived."

She knew what he meant immediately, the only visitors she was expecting were her grandmother, aunt and uncle or cousin, if she had been brought along.

"Which visitors were you expecting Chi-Chi?" her mother asked. "Are they staying for dinner and should I ask the chef to add more food?"

Chi Lian wondered what her mother would say once she heard that it was their wicked grandmother. She had only jus managed to calm down, was it necessary to put her through the whole thing again?

"Mum," she said nervously.

"What?" Mama Chi asked her.

Chi Lian shook her head and said, "Never mind."

Then she looked at old Tiger and said, "Send them to the gym, I am going to meet you there immediately."

There was a home gym in the mansion; it was in the furthest corner. The mansion was quite large so she was sure that they question these people without alerting her mother. However, she needed to create a good distraction and ensure that her mother stayed here.

"Mom, I want to eat your egg fried rice and chicken stir fry." Chi Lian suddenly blurted.

Mama Chi looked at her daughter and then at the gas and kitchen counter. The chef had already a variety of foods; this would be enough to satisfy the whole family surely.

"Chi-Chi, why are you suddenly having food cravings?" she asked. "The chef has cooked enough food tonight; I will cook what you want tomorrow."

Chi Lian sulked and responded like a child, "I won’t eat the chef’s food. I want yours, mum..." she whined childishly. "If you don’t say yes, I will run away from home." She threatened.

"You have been making that threat since your teenage days and you have not run away even once." her mother rebutted.

"I could not afford to run away back then, now I have enough money to do it. I will take the children and run away from home." She said.

Mama Chi gasped, "You are threatening me with my grandchildren."

"So I have discovered your weak spot." Chi Lian smiled villainously. "Mum, feed your daughter or say good bye to the sweet baby smell you love so much." She joked.

"Aiyooo." Mama Chi played along and acted as if she was scared.

"Anyway, mum I have to go and take care of something briefly with Muyang but he is also looking forward to tasting your egg fried rice. I told him that it’s the best in the world."

Chi Lian sprinkled a dash of lies on top of her request. Her mother could turn her down but she could not turn down her beloved son-in-law.

Chi Lian giggled and escaped the chicken as mama Chi called the maids in and asked them to put the ingredients she needed.

She found Spider standing outside the kitchen door.

"Are they there?" she asked him.

"Your brothers and brothers-in-law are there already. Do you need tools?" he asked.

Yes, his question reminded her about the most effective tool she needed and could easily access.

"T4, do you know what I need?"

"Purchased and sent to your storage already host."

She walked with a mission since she had what she needed, walking with determination with Spider two feet behind her. The cold look on both of their faces scared the butler who had seen four people being dragged off in that direction.

Something was going on because even the young masters had gone that same way.

As the butler of the family, it was his duty to maintain the safety and privacy of the family.

"Qi Qing," he called the nearest and most efficient maid, "Tell the others not to go to the East wing for a while. The young miss and masters are taking care of personal business. If anybody disobeys that order they will be fired."

"Yes." Qi Qing sped off to pass the word around.
