Chapter 289: The old master to the rescue

"Mother saw me and asked me not to tell anyone but it killed me to keep that secret from you all. What kind of logic is that, one child existing to work for the well-being of the other like an ox? Now we know why aunt boldly made such ugly entitled statements like your money belongs to me, mother is not her sister." Chi Zimo said in conclusion.

He was shaking his head in total disappointment over the hand that life had dealt his mother.

For a while, everyone remained silent, not knowing what to say or do about the situation at hand. The only sound in the house was that of Pearl who was mewing loudly and persistently in her basket.

The maids brought in tea and snacks and then they left quietly. Mei-Mei too had returned with her mouth dirty, covered in red strawberry jam.

"So what is your mother saying about all this?" the old madam asked after a while.

"She is in shock." Chi Rui answered.

Qi Qing returned with a warm towel and Chi Lian wiped Mei-Mei’s face despite the little girl’s struggles not to be cleaned.

After Qi Qing left, the old master asked Chi Wei, "What is your next step because you need to find out if your mother was adopted or stolen. Do you know that all members of aristocratic families register their DNA with the hospital here in the courts because back then the rebels came up with a plan of infiltrating the families by switching out the true descendants for their own children children who would later be activated to destroy the roots of the empire?

The plot was discovered when a maid was caught swapping the crown prince for another child. She confessed everything after interrogation and then all hell broke loose."

"I remember this," the old madam interjected with her own recollection of events. "All families were gathered in one place here and samples were forcefully taken. It turned out that in almost every family an impostor was living under the disguise of the real child. You should have seen the after math, so many arrests were made.

A lot of people were involved in the scheme from doctors and nurses to servants in the homes. From then on, DNA tests are done on the children immediately after birth. Some families even do them before the child is born."

"Anyway," the old master stepped in once more and said, "What I meant to drive at with that is the fact that there are places where DNA of many people is stored, even the police keeps the DNA samples of people who report their loved ones missing. You can take a sample of your mother’s DNA to the police and the hospital here, if she has any relatives whose DNA is in their databases they will find them."

Just like that, the old master provided the first tangible solution for the moment.

"Do we need anything special for the hospital here to use?" Chi Wei jumped up and asked. He was ready to start the process immediately.

"Just some hair, blood or saliva, anything that can be used in the process will work. I am going to make a phone call and tell the doctor to expect you." The old master answered and proceeded to make a call.

"I still have a sample of mother’s hair." Chi Lian said, dashed upstairs and returned with three strands of hair which she gave to Chi Wei.

Chi Wei impatiently waited for the old master to hung up and give him instructions on how to proceed when he got to the hospital.

As he was waiting, everyone’s eyes were turned to the corner where Pearl was briefly. The cat was still mewing and it was becoming louder with each minute that passed.

"What is wrong with that cat?" the old madam asked.

"I don’t know," Chi Lian answered. "T4, do you know why it’s making such weird sounds?"

"How should I know?" T4 asked her.

"I don’t know, analyze the sound and check on the internet for anything matching. We are discussing important business here and it’s distracting us."

Chi Lian stood up and went to check on Pearl, she was a member of the family after all.

As she was doing so, Chi Wei received instructions and dashed out of the house with no hesitation.

Chi Lian squatted down and looked at the cat, "What’s wrong Pearl?" she asked.

The cat mewed weakly in response.

"Are you sick? Did you eat something bad?" she asked the cat.

The old madam joined her and she tried to touch Pearl’s belly but the cat hissed and the old madam took her hand back quickly.

"Chi-Chi, I thought Pearl doesn’t like men, why is she suddenly hostile to me? I am a woman right?"

Chi Lian held back from laughing when the old madam looked down at her chest as if to confirm that she was still a woman.

"Uhm, host I suggest you call a vet or prepare hot towels because according to the internet that sound and the sudden hostility could possibly mean that your pregnant cat is going to give birth."

Chi Lian jumped up shouting, "Babies, babies, babies."

"Chi-Chi, what are you shouting about?" the old madam asked.

"I think Pearl is about to give birth." She said again loudly, while pointing to the cat.

"Old man," the old madam turned around and shouted to her husband, "Call the doctor, my kittens are about to be born."

Chi Lian who was shouting was suddenly forced into speechlessness. As far as she knew, Pearl was her cat; shouldn’t the kittens belong to her as well?

"Which doctor?" the old master asked.

"Uhm, the family doctor." The old madam said hesitantly.

Chi Lian smacked her own forehead with her hand. Were they trying to call a family doctor for a cat in labor?

She already had a vet on call, he had been to the house twice to check on the all the animals. Chi Lian had named him ’doctor do little’ as a joke because he worked with animals.

"T4 call doctor do little."

"Already done, he is five minutes out host." As always, T4 handled the problem before she could even ask.

"Grandma, we should give Pearl some privacy." She tugged at the old madam’s arm.

The old woman was reluctant to move away and her eyes were looking at Pearl anxiously, filled with worry.

"But the kittens." She said.

"The kittens are not yet born grandma." Chi Lian answered. "Besides, we are going to sit over there where we can keep a close eye on the situation." She assured the old madam. "Besides we still have to talk about what else to do to help mother find her real family."

As the old madam reluctantly walked away with Chi Lian, she made a suggestion, "Just bring the old witch here and interrogate her. If she won’t talk, bring her daughter here as a hostage, I can assure you nothing will pry her mouth open faster than threatening her daughter. You should whip, slap or pinch her here and there to sell it efficiently."

The old madam made this threat so nonchalantly but everyone else around minus the old master was shocked.
