Chapter 257: The enemy strikes
They had been back for five days now and already, Chi Lian had made some changes to her routine. Part of her new routine was running at night, four times a week. Ever since her body was changed by the gene editing serum, she was filled with this immense energy which she often the need to burn off. Her body had become leaner thanks to these nightly runs.
Chi Lian enjoyed running in the cold wind, she loved the way it brushed past her face, cooling off the hotness and sweat her body emitted. She could run for hours steadily in the snow without feeling tired at all.
Just to be safe, Muyang insisted that she run with Blackguard, the big dog was her steady companion on these runs.
With music in her ears, she sang along to rock and pop music play list that T4 had put together, looking like she was having the most fun in the world.
However tonight, she was running with a different purpose, T4 had discovered that there was someone who seemed to be trailing her every time she came out for her run. It wasn’t one of Muyang’s secret men nor was it a soldier in the emperor’s courts. This was someone else, someone that carefully hid their face and gave her a wide berth.
According to T4 this person was carrying a knife and a semi thin rope, the kind some assassins used to take out their targets and Chi Lian seemed to be the target.
This all made Chi Lian wonder, how an assassin was able to get into the emperor’s courts in the first place. This residence was filled with cameras, trained dogs and highly skilled soldiers so where did this individual pass?
The only reasonable answer was that this assassin either lived in the emperor’s courts or they had been let in by someone in the aristocratic families.
Chi Lian had always known that she had an enemy within these walls but having an assassin sent after her so close to home really scared her a little bit. That’s why she chose to start running even on days when she was not scheduled to run. She wanted to personally confront this individual and finally know who her hidden enemy was.
"T4, do you think it will be tonight?" Whenever she came was running, she wondered if that night would finally be the night they would end this little game of cat and mouse.
"Well, he is closer than usual; perhaps they have finally picked up the courage to face you. Whoever it is, they are still not carrying any electronic device that I can hack."
Chi Lian stopped and jogged in one place, looking for the dark spots she had previously marked off in her mind all these nights. Ever since she took the gene editing serum, her mind was much sharper and her memory clearer.
Even her vision and hearing were sharper. However slow the assassin was moving, she could hear his tentative steps.
"Black guard, come on, you look like you want to take a piss." She held the dog’s chain and led it a darkish corner close to the shopping complex in the residence.
When she stopped for Black guard to pee, the dog simply looked at her in confusion and barked twice.
If it could talk, it would ask her "When did I say I wanted to take a piss?"
"Blackguard, listen carefully. If anybody lunges at me, don’t interfere until I tell you to. Run away and hide until you hear my special whistle." She whispered to the dog.
As she was whispering the instructions, she pretended to be massaging the dog’s neck like any loving pet owner does. "Go now." she sent the dog away.
"Host, he is coming at you fast."
"I am ready." She replied confidently with a smirk on her face.
Right as she was standing up, a dark figure that was fully covered from head to door except for two holes around the eyes grabbed her and threw her down.
Chi Lian let it happen, not bothering to fight back. Black guard was whimpering a distance away from her where he was hiding in the dark.
"Please, don’t hurt me." She pleaded in a small voice. Looking into the strange colored eyes of her assailant, she pleaded emotionally. She was like the most harmless creature on earth, one that anyone could not resist saving. Her gaze was steady, focused only on the assassin’s eyes.
The reason as to why she was keeping her gaze focused on the assassin’s eyes was because the eyes fascinated her. One was pure black and the other was blackish with blue on the inside. Who in the world had eyes like this? Was he a foreigner?
"Host, this person has a camera inside their eye. If you can stay in this position for a few seconds, I can trace where the signal is coming from and who is watching. Whoever is receiving the footage must be the one who sent him."
So it was a fake eye, she thought. No wonder it was shiny and blue.
To buy T4 time, she stayed in that position, with her back on the cold frozen ground, pitifully looking into the eyes of the person whose hands were intent on suffocating her. She was fighting weakly to remove his hands from her throat.
She coughed because she was choking; even pretense could be physically painful if it got to a maximum point.
"T4, are you finished?" She asked. She was not willing to die after all.
"Twenty more seconds host."
She asked her assailant in a breathless voice as she was struggling to breathe, "Why are you doing this?"
"Because you offended someone you should not have offended." The assailant answered her. "I was told to make it hurt so prepare yourself, this is going to be excruciating."
"Host, I am done." T4 finally said.
As the assailant reached into his pocket and brought out a knife, she swung her legs up and caught his neck in a choke hold.
He tried to stab her but she caught his hands and pushed back against him. She could easily have snapped his hand but because he had a camera in his eye, she did not want her enemies to get an idea about her strength.
This also meant she could not take any of her special weapons out of her storage unless she was out of his direct eyesight.
They struggled in that position until she managed to make him drop the knife and then she punched him in the nose really hard that she heard it breaking.
With his nose bleeding, the assailant lost focus on her and she freed herself. The fight ensued while they were both on their feet.
The assailant was determined to get the job done. He took the rope out of his pocket and wrapped it around his hands while giving her a vicious determined look.
Chi Lian smirked and used two of her fingers to call him forward. She was ready for him.
She fought him using the moves she had learned as a soldier, making sure that he did not get any chance to grab a hold of any part of her body and at the first chance she got to go for his eyes; she used all her energy to dig into the eye with a camera really deep. She ripped the eye out and tossed it into a heap of snow. Then she used wrath to knock him out since no one was watching her anymore.
She enjoyed seeing the lost look on his face when she swung a bat at him out of nowhere.
"Host, it’s the Chu family. The ones with the insane woman who was in love with Muyang, they are the ones who hired him."
