Chapter 245: Chi Lian has contraband
After two hours of skating fun, they went to the designated dining tables to grab some food. The tables were squeezed together closely to ensure that parents kept track of their children at all times.
Other families were there with their little ones eating or waiting for their food to be delivered.
Chi Lian and Muyang sat the children in toddler seats and secured them before taking their own seats.
"Wasn’t that fun?" Chi Lian asked Muyang.
He nodded and agreed with her. "Who knew that spending two hours teaching my son to skate on a five minute track would be so enjoyable?" He laughed after saying it.
It seemed quite ridiculous to anyone that someone could spend two hours teaching somebody to accomplish something like that. The toddler training course on the ice rink was really so simple and yet to toddlers, it was like scaling a mountain. It was difficult and it took forever.
And yet, somehow Muyang felt invigorated rather than exhausted and bored.
"Mummy food." Mei-Mei’s demanding food came from the little chair next to hers.
She rubbed Mei-Mei’s head and said, "It’s coming dear, be a little patient."
She looked at little Monk who was sitting with Muyang but his eyes were glued to her expectantly.
"You too dear, your food is coming." She told him.
Muyang frowned and asked playfully, "Why don’t they ask me for food? Daddies can provide too you know."
Chi Lian picked up the baby bag on the table and answered, "But mummies always carry the bags with the snacks. Can all these fit into your pocket?"
She opened the bag which had cookies, crisps, yoghurt, juice, milk and a tiny container of fruit salad.
"See, mummies rock." She praised herself after seeing the stunned look on his face at seeing all the snacks in the bag.
"You know that they don’t allow personal snacks in here, right?" he looked at her with disbelief in his eyes. "How did you sneak all that contraband in?"
Muyang knew the business strategy of this ice rink. Most of their money was not made on the ticket sales, those were quite cheap. That’s why this place was always crowded.
However, they did not allow people to bring in outside food which forced parents to purchase food and snacks from them at a high price.
Chi Lian found it amusing that Muyang was calling the snacks contraband. One would think she had snuck in actual drugs.
"Our little luggage went through a scanner, how did it miss the snacks?" he lowered his voice this time around while he inquired further.
"Have you forgotten about my adjustable storage containers? They can hide almost anything. At first I felt guilty for sneaking in snacks but after being snubbed by that boy at ticket booth I am guilt free." She answered confidently.
She tore some packets of crisps and handed them to the children. She also gave them some strawberry and banana milk.
"Excuse me," a voice interrupted their family time from behind Chi Lian and she turned around.
There was a young woman carrying a sniveling toddler. The young woman looked so guilty for coming over but she must have been stuck in a hopeless situation.
"Yes, can I help you?" Chi Lian responded politely with a smile.
The woman looked around before requesting, "Can I please ask for a snack if you have some extra? I overheard some little tidbits of your conversation and I am in a hopeless situation. It takes around twenty to thirty minutes for food to be delivered to a table and my Bao-Bao is very hungry. The snack carts are awfully expensive and we have already paid for food."
Chi Lian looked at Bao-Bao who had a snot filled nose from too much crying. The little girl must have really been very hungry to cry to that extent. Not all families could afford to eat from here, a one Yuan snack outside cost twenty Yuan here. And those were the cheap ones; most snacks started at twenty Yuan and went up from there. A good plate of food could cost between five hundred to ten thousand Yuan.
Given the way Bao-Bao’s mother was dressed, she did not seem to be in a very good financial situation. Her clothes were worn out and the soles of her shoes appeared to be down to the last layer.
"I can pay if you have something for three Yuan." Bao-Bao’s mother quickly said. She appeared to be slightly desperate and exhausted.
The young woman reminded her of herself at marine world when Mei-Mei was crying for a snack and that judgmental woman made some rude comments to her.
"You don’t need to pay." She answered the woman with a smile. "I have plenty of snacks here; my little ones can’t eat them all. First wipe Bao-Bao’s nose and calm down."
"Thank you." The woman sagged with relief. She quickly found a seat on the empty table next to theirs and cleaned up her daughter.
Chi Lian handed her cookies and milk for her little one.
As Bao-Bao happily stuffed herself on the snacks, her mother looked at Chi Lian and smiled gratefully. "You don’t know how much you have helped me. My husband went to see what the hold up with the food was but he has not yet returned. By the way I am Liu Yifei"
"Oh, I am Chi Lian and this is my hus..." Chi Lian stopped herself just as soon as she realized what she had almost said. She had almost called Muyang her husband so naturally. "My fiancé Muyang." She corrected herself.
Muyang also smiled at her almost mistake. He had no issue with being known as her husband; in fact he would very much love it.
"Hello, nice to meet you." Muyang nodded at Liu Yifei.
Just then, Yifei’s husband came back with a grim look on his face. "We have to wait." He told her.
Yifei smiled brightly and answered, "Husband, it’s okay, these kind people gave our Bao-Bao some snacks."
She pointed her husband to Chi Lian and Muyang.
"Thank you so much." Yifei’s husband looked at them with a grateful smile. "Our Bao-Bao looks very happy."
"Of course she is happy; she is eating snacks and milk worth thousands of Yuan." T4’s voice was laced with unnecessary sarcasm.
But the hundred Yuan valuation was because the milk came from cows which produced the sweetest milk in the world and the cookies came from the virtual farm. These things certainly deserved the high valuation he attached to them.
"I am Cong Liang," he introduced himself to Muyang and they shook hands.
The two families sat closely together after introductions had been made. Bao-Bao and Mei-Mei quickly became friends, sharing toys and happily laughing together.
When the food finally arrived, both families ate happily while sharing information about each other.
Yifei was a masseuse while her husband worked in construction. It was evident that while they were not well off, they still made sacrifices to make their daughter happy. Like this trip to Nanjing for their daughter to ski.
Chi Lian invited them to the ice fishing trip which would take place tomorrow and they gladly accepted.
