Chapter 237: Achilles heel
Chapter 237: Achilles heel
Muyang indulgently shook his head and tightened his hold on her. His little minx certainly knew how to assuage him expertly. She had mollified his anger within a few seconds, how could he fail to make such a promise. All he had been trying to do was scare her, perhaps he had gone too far.
"I am sorry; I won’t ever do any those things again." He said softly. He gently caressed her hair as he made that promise. "But it doesn’t mean that I won’t punish you if this ever happens again. You are only escaping today because of those tears."
Chi Lian smiled slyly, she would simply cry again next time to avoid the punishment. Now that she knew it was his Achilles heel, she would exploit it to get herself out of trouble whenever possible.
"I am really sorry too; I will be more forth coming from now on." She really meant these words; she was going to be as honest with him about the threats to their family as much as she could.
"By the way, I got you something." She pulled herself out of his embrace and gave him the gene editing serum.
Muyang looked at the vial with a blue liquid with a little frown on his face. He knew that things which came from her were always special, this was probably special too. He took the vial from her and he shook it from left to right. With the way he was doing it, all that was missing was glasses and a white gown to make him look like one of those lab scientists.
"What is it?" he asked.
"It’s a gene editing serum, taking it will increase your strength, speed, vision...." she recounted what T4 had told her.
As she was talking and counting the benefits of taking the serum off of her fingers, she missed to see the stunned look on Muyang’s face. His eyes were blinking continuously, his eyes were wide open and so was his mouth.
His hands were shaking, if he was not careful, the vial drop out of his hands at any moment.
"So far we have only been able to produce two superior gene editing portions, the rest are poor or of medium quality. I already took one and I saved the other one for you." She said in conclusion and looked at him with a bright smile on her face.
He was not moving, he was in frozen in place, kind of like a sculpture.
"Muyang." Chi Lian called his name and poked him in the abdomen. "Yang-Yang, what’s wrong?" she even used the nickname he hated so much.
Right on cue, he frowned and squinted his eyes at her. "I hate that name." he immediately said.
"I know." She answered. "Are you going to take the serum or not?" she asked eagerly.
Muyang looked at the vial and started doing that tapping movement with his fingers. He seemed to be considering or weighing the pros and cons of taking the serum.
"Who made this?" he suddenly asked her.
"A friend of mine." She answered. Well T4 was technically her friend. He may not have made the serum but he had provided it.
Muyang thought of all the people he knew that counted as Chi Lian’s friends but none of them had the expertise to do this.
"Can I meet this friend?" he asked. "The empire has a department of the sciences which has been working on this for years but they have made zero progress. If your friend could help us then he or she will be well compensated for their help." he explained the reasons for his questions.
This was the kind of science which would create a better world he believed. Diseases like cancer which were sometimes passed down through genes could be eradicated. Perhaps they could even rebuild broken bodies and solve the issue of mental illnesses. This serum had so much potential to do so much good in the right hands.
"My friend has not yet stabilized the process, secured the ingredients. These two were just a fluke, but I can get some of the failed serums later, maybe you can start with those for research." She said as an afterthought.
T4 had said the poor quality gene editing serums were cheap. They probably did not have much of an effect anyway.
He nodded and downed the serum. He even went to the bathroom to look at himself in the mirror.
When he came out, he had that same confused look she had on her face after she took the serum. "I don’t see a difference in my body physically." He said.
Chi Lian observed him while scratching her chin. After a while, she said, "Your muscles look to be more defined."
Muyang looked at his arms and shook his head. "I don’t see it." He disagreed with her. "All I feel is warmth in my lower abdomen."
He touched his stomach right below his navel. "Is it supposed to do that?"
"Yes, it does that until your body grows accustomed to the changes and energy. We have to be physically active to burn off the energy so from now on, we must work out as much as possible." She informed him.
She also got the boxing techniques that T4 gave her and showed them to him. The set of moves was written down in a note book. Besides the detailed description of each move was a figure demonstrating the action.
"Host I can also give you video footage of our soldiers training in those moves." The system offered gladly.
Chi Lian agreed immediately. The footage would come in handy later if she failed to comprehend what she read.
Muyang rolled on the bed and pulled her down. They were lying close together, just listening to each other’s heart beating strongly. For one small moment, they enjoyed some peace and quiet.
"We have not finished that talk about the threat the children are facing. "He brought the topic up again breaking the wonderful rare moment of tranquility.
The gene editing serum had distracted him for a while but they had not come to an agreement about how to handle the issue.
"I want you to stop looking into it for a while, tell your people to back off, I will start from where you have stopped." He said.
Chi Lian pursed her lips and pouted. She longed to say absolutely not but she had just managed to dig herself out of the hole. She needed to frame her words in a way that they would be perceived as understanding but wise. Was that even possible?
"But I have made so much progress." She said in a tiny hopeful voice. Surely this would be like the police pulling one of their best detectives off a case.
