Chapter 217: The companion doll
"Oh. It’s so cute." Chi Lian gushed. "You said it can walk on its own, right?" she asked T4.
"Yes host, the pingu companion doll is the most preferred companion for children and adults who live alone. It can be used as a conversational aid for toddlers who are struggling to talk. All you have to do is upload what topics you want it to discuss and it will do the rest." T4 explained.
Chi Lian studied the penguin; she remembered that back on earth in the old days there was a cartoon on television with a Penguin called pingu. Was it a coincidence that this doll was also called Pingu? Could there be a traverser on T4’s world?
"Host, the uploading point is on its ass, just lift the short tail and connect a flash drive. The companion can also be used an educational tool if you upload educational data to it. I think it has the potential for mass production and use in this world, the software is quite simple and it can hold basic conversations I think the market will be large for it."
"I agree." She replied and then she gave the companion doll to little monk.
The little boy looked at the toy in curious wonder and then he looked at his mother. His eyes posed the question," What do I do with this?"
On the Penguin’s stomach were two buttons, one green for on and one red for off.
She pressed start and the penguin started talking, "I like the snow, do you like snow?" it asked Chi Lian.
"No, I think it’s cold and uncomfortable." She answered.
"Have you considered taking hot chocolate? A cup of hot chocolate in the cold weather is very satisfying." The doll answered.
"I don’t like chocolate." She answered.
"Then perhaps some marshmallows," it counter suggested.
Chi Lian could see how it worked, T4 had loaded with basic information about life. "T4, the children cannot hold such conversations, did you add anything else."
"Host. Command it to switch to toddler settings, it can be voice activated."
She did just as T4 said and a childish girl’s voice came from the doll this time, "Hello, I am your friend."
Suddenly Mei-Mei scrambled from where she was and reached for the doll with her grubby hands.
"No, baby, this is for your brother." Chi Lian lifted the doll high.
Mei-Mei responded by crying and trying to jump so that she could snatch the doll out of her mother’s hand.
Muyang came in and that was the sight which met his eyes. Mei-Mei quickly looked at him and wailed even louder than she had been doing before.
"What’s going on?" he placed the tray of breakfast assortments on the table and came to comfort his daughter. "Why is she crying?" she asked Chi Lian.
"She wants her brother’s doll." Chi Lian handed the penguin to little monk. "I am going to get her one of her own but she is too impatient. I wonder where she gets that from."
"Not me." Muyang denied immediately without hesitation. In his arms, Mei-Mei was pointing to the Penguin and then looking at him as if saying "Go and bring it for me."
Little Monk lifted his hand and held the doll in Mei-Mei’s direction. Quickly, the little girl wiggled, leaving her father’s arms and returning to the bed were she gladly took the doll from little monk and pinched its cheeks the giggled.
"She doesn’t even know its use." Chi Lian sighed.
"What does it do?" Muyang asked curiously. All he saw was an ordinary penguin, was there something special about it?
Chi Lian said, "Companion, play the old McDonald had a farm."
The beat came from within the doll and the song started playing with the doll singing along. Mei-Mei knew around three words in the song but she shouted along, singing off key and completely out of tune. But she was happy, what more could a parent ask for?
"Oh," Muyang said. One of his hands moved to his chin and scratched it. "A voice activation system, is it similar to the one in the RV?"
"It’s less complicated, this is a basic conversational device meant to keep adults and children company. I used to think this invention was useless until little Monk came along. I want it to encourage him to talk."
Muyang nodded then he brought the breakfast tray to the bed. He buttered some bread for her and gave it to her.
"Is it going to be mass produced?" he asked after she swallowed.
"That’s the plan." She replied after taking a sip of milk. "By the way, I ordered a special breed of cows, are we allowed to raise animals in the emperor’s court?"
"It depends; most families don’t do it because they can’t stand the smell of animal waste and the noise. But your case is different, this mansion is isolated so you don’t have neighbors who will complain about it and the emperor gave you all this land. If you don’t mind the smell and noise, it should not be a problem." He replied.
She nodded and ate a chocolate chip cookie ravenously. She was like a squirrel, a packet of ten cookies and six had already disappeared into her mouth.
Muyang found the way she was chewing with her eyes closed happily really funny and adorable.
"By the way, I don’t know if you are aware but there is a picture of you and the twins online. People are speculating about why you suddenly went from having one baby to two." He informed her. He assumed she was not aware because her hands had been full since she left the hospital.
"I know, I gave grandmother permission to share it. It solved the share dropping crisis. Everyone now thinks that grandfather was in the hospital to visit me and the children because one or both of them were sick." She answered.
"What are we going to tell people about our son by the way?" he asked her.
"Just say he was born sickly and he has been getting treatment and he has recovered successfully." She replied nonchalantly.
Muyang laughed softly. "Your ability to lie spontaneously amazes me. It makes me wonder how often you lie to me." He said craftily.
Her head which was bent looking for something else to eat on the almost empty tray popped up suddenly.
Muyang pinched her cheeks with his hands, "Do you lie to me?" he questioned.
She shook her head with her eyes widened. "No, not about the things that matter." She said truthfully. The system was none of his business. It was not anybody else’s business apart from her. Maybe someday in future she could tell him about it but not now.
"Okay." He smiled and kissed her on the lips.
The door burst open and the old madam and master came in. "See, I told you he was up to no good." The old madam said accusingly.
