Chapter 181: The hidden enemy

"I have made up my mind Muyang, I will go alone. It will be a three day stay at most. By the time I return, one of us will have an answer that brings us closer to our goal."

Her reason for insisting that she go alone was because she was also going to do her mission. The killer she was supposed to photograph and reveal was in that town. It had been trending news all over the empire lately that the killer had struck again. This prompted the countdown of her mission to begin. She could not afford to push it off anymore. She needed T4’s help to find her son; if she failed the mission perhaps T4 would be deactivated.

She was not willing to risk it. First thing to do tomorrow morning was set off for Xunwai town.

While she and Muyang made plans, someone else also made plans. The Jun family had made it no secret that they were searching for their lost child. Some of the privileged families were already discussing this new big news.

In one of the houses in the Emperor’s courts, the woman who had ethereal beauty with a black beauty mask on her face was sleeping in a lounge chair besides a swimming pool. Her subordinate was kneeling before her and updating her on the situation at hand to do with Muyang.

Once the woman heard that Chi Lian had a son, she screamed loudly, grabbed a glass from the table next to her and smashed it on the floor.

An older woman came running and asked, "Daya, what’s wrong, did someone make you angry tell your mother, I will have that person removed from this world."

The woman named Daya ignored her mother; instead she slapped her subordinate across the cheek heavily. The ring on her finger cut the subordinates cheek and a small trail of blood made its way down her cheek but the subordinate did not flinch or move.

Daya looked at her own hands in disgust and looked around for something to clean them.

Daya’s mother ordered a servant to bring a napkin and Daya wiped her hands carefully as if her subordinates blood contained bugs.

"Find the child before they do and kill it." Daya ordered the subordinate.

"Yes Ma’am." Her subordinate responded and left the house through a secret tunnel.

Early in the morning, while the clouds were still dark with heavy snow falling, everyone including the Jun family members gathered to send Chi Lian off to Xunwai town. Mama Chi and He Weili were trading information about the calamity of the missing child. It was Mama Chi that told He Weili that Chi-Chi was going to Xunwai because she had a possible lead.

That said, the old lady and He Weili had to be forcefully held back when they heard about it. They too wanted to follow her but Muyang refused them. He said they would delay her because she would need to take care of them along the journey however on her own, she could move faster and protect herself easier.

He himself only gave up on following her after he learned that Piggy and squirrel, who were expert fighters among her new guards, were going with her.

She had told her family about the secret guards and the tunnels in the basements of different families. She also told them that they had to be careful in the capital because the waters run really deep. She encouraged them to recruit talents for the family and she gave them all cards that granted them access to the basement.

Chi Wei and Chi Rui promised that before she returned they would have recruited at least one more talent each for the family. Chi Zimo made the same promise but everyone ignored him. What talent could a student possibly bring in?

Chi Lian’s reason for not hiding any of these things from them was to make sure that they had some self-preservation. Her parents in particular were weak, easily frightened and soft hearted. Just take a look at the way her father had given up on hunting for the man who defrauded him!!! The same man who was the reason for their moving to the slums and her almost being raped.

They needed to become strong on their own. She would not always be their crutch to lean on.

After stuffing the land rover with food stuffs, Mama Chi tearfully hugged her daughter. One after another, her brothers hugged her too and so did the old madam and He Weili. Muyang was the last to get a hug.

"Come back safely." He whispered while holding her so tightly that she had to gasp for breath.

"I will." She promised. "Take care of our daughter."

"I won’t take my eyes off her." He promised. And he meant it. She would go with him everywhere when she was not at home.

Piggy whose real name was Chu Ximeng, a young man in his early twenties who did not look anything like his code name started the car as Chi Lian waved goodbye to her family. She was fighting back the tears over the overwhelming love and support she was receiving. Everyone was acting as if she was moving to another empire when in reality she would be back probably before the week ended.

Unknown to her, as soon as her car exited the emperor’s courts, another car trailed them carefully, keeping an eye on their every stop and turn.

When the car was fading away in the distance, the old madam looked at Muyang and asked, "Do you think she will find something?"

"I hope so." He replied calmly, "Or we find something. Whichever comes first doesn’t matter, what matters is that we find our son."

The old madam suddenly started crying again, ever since she found out that she had a missing grandson who was possibly in danger she had hardly stopped crying. She would pause, eat something, sleep, wake up and cry again. Everyone had tried to comfort her but all in vain.

"Mother, you need to stop crying, think about your health." Chairman Jun came all the way from the back and told her. He used a handkerchief from his pocket to wipe her eyes.

Out of everyone that came to see Chi Lian off, he was the most unexpected person to show up. It was no secret that he did not like Chi Lian and he was rooting for her and Muyang to break up. The man had never even carried Mei-Mei in his arms, given her a gift or spoken to the child. And yet when the family rallied behind this new cause he showed up. He was even making phone calls, asking for help from his powerful friends to find doctor Ouyang’s associates or anyone that privately funded his research.

"Son, "the old madam cried, "I can’t help myself. When I think about what my grandson could be going through out there, my heart breaks into millions of pieces all over again." She suddenly gripped Chairman Jun’s arm and bent down. Her legs were shaking; she had all lost all of her energy and could barely support herself anymore.

"Mother." Chairman Jun called out in an alarmed voice.

Everyone turned to the old madam and she was carried inside the Chi house very quickly. She was laid down in a chair and Qi Qing came in with a glass of water for her.

"Is grandma okay?" one of the triplets asked anxiously.

Ringo did not even ask if his grandmother was okay, he punched the wall fiercely and strode out of the house in anger.

The old master stayed by his wife’s side, holding her hand in fear. "Wife, you cannot be like this right now."

"I know," she replied still crying, "I can’t help myself, I am worried. What if...." she stopped herself from talking because what she was thinking was too grave.

"Wife, you cannot think like that. If the children hear you say such a thing, what should they do? Chi-Chi and Muyang are depending on us to be strong and encourage them. We have to go to the temple today and pray for the safe return of our grandchild so eat something, regain your energy and think of only positive outcomes."

His words woke her up form her stupor, she could not afford to be down and weak, the children needed her support.
