Chapter 146: Betrothal gifts

The two families were simply addled, what exactly where they supposed to do next? It was not exactly a proposal but a betrothal was probably the next best thing.

The women looked at the old master, as the patriarch, it was sort of in his department to handle the situation. The old master stepped in as expected.

"Uhm, in-laws," he said to the Chi’s "as you can see Muyang has made up his mind. We as the adults support his decision so I have nothing much to say except that we cannot wait to officially welcome Chi-Chi into our family as our daughter." He concluded his words with a humble bow.

"Yes, in-laws," the old madam added, "We have been waiting for this moment for a long time. With a betrothal we can all be contented knowing fully well that their future together is certain. What Muyang has given, we are prepared to give more."

"No...No, no please this is already too much; we don’t dare accept anything more." Papa Chi waved his shivering hands around nervously. A betrothal gift worth hundreds of millions, what would happen when it came to exchanging engagement gifts? Their family could not afford something of equal value. "I am afraid we don’t have much that is worth what Muyang has given Chi-Chi." He explained. His eyes were remorseful and guilty.

"What are you talking about in-laws, all those little gadgets and medicines Chi-Chi has are worth billions. If we are to count them, she would quickly be one of the one hundred richest people in the empire. We value her so much and we are desperate to bring her into our family. We will make sure Muyang does right by her." He Weili said.

Mama Chi sobbed silently and wiped tears from her eyes constantly. Papa Chi was doing his best to calm her down. This was all they had been waiting for, some sincerity for their daughter. The Jun’s had just done that. Their Chi-Chi was loved and valued, she would be very happy.

"Then since Chi-Chi already gave birth to Mei-Mei we can consider her the betrothal gift." The old madam joked and everyone laughed.

"No," mama Chi wiped some more tears away, "we have to do things the right way. Since we are exchanging betrothal gifts, we have to show our sincerity as well. We will provide something in exchange as well. Chi Rui, come here with a piece of paper."

Chi Rui took a paper from Wenzhe and a pen because he figured she wanted to write something down.

Mama Chi scribbled some words on a paper and handed it over to the old madam.

"Elder, I know this is not an official document but my husband and I will be giving Muyang ten percent of our shares in Phoenix entertainment and phoenix toys. They may not be as valuable as the shares of Jun investments but to us, it’s all we have." She said sincerely. The shares had been given to them by their daughter and they could use them to secure a better future for her.

"And we accept it." The old madam took Mama Chi’s hand and rubbed it carefully. "From now on, to us here Chi-Chi and Muyang are engaged." She said with finality.

Chi Lian could only silently watch as her future was decided for her. Not that she was against it but could someone at least ask her what she thought?

"Host, isn’t this a good thing?"

"I am not sure." She responded.

"Don’t worry host, I am sure for both of us. It’s a good thing, now all you need to do is have a baby and leave the rest to me."

"Shut up." She told the Jolly system. He kept yapping about having a baby as if he would carry the pregnancy or do the baby sitting.

"From now on, you are mine." Muyang whispered into her ear. "I promise that I will propose in a much grander way than this. Everything that happened today just scared me so much which made me suddenly rush my plans. I don’t want to lose you ever, not to death or another man. And you need to always remember that there is a man and a child at home waiting for you so that you don’t jump into fires with two feet."

"En." She squealed and covered her mouth.

Her heart was jittery; knowing that a proposal would be coming in the future was exciting and unnerving. Everybody assumed that she did not know what some wealthy aristocratic women were saying about her but she did. She knew that she was being called cheap, a gold digger, loose and immoral. Knowing that soon she would shut all their mouths up was satisfying. All those women who had their eyes on Muyang, they didn’t even care that he had a child. They would not care if he had ten children, given his wealth, status and looks they would come running if he called.

But she had to admit, it did feel good to be loved and protected by him. Before she died, she never experienced the love and protection of any man. It felt so wholesome to know that someone was waiting for her at home. That she would never have to go home to an empty house because he and Mei-Mei would be there.

She squeezed his hands and leaned against his arm comfortably. "Thank you." She whispered. It had not even struck her that honor was a big deal to families in the empire until she saw her mother crying. T4 had told her about the conversation between Muyang and her brother. Now she knew why mama Chi had been pushing for the relationship to become serious. She was protecting her.

"Okay everyone, those who are heading home tonight please start packing immediately." Chi Rui announced to the family. "The event is officially over, there is nothing left to see."

"Should we leave?" the elders asked each other.

Most campers were leaving tonight. Most people had work the next day; some had to return to their cities and others to their families.

"Chi-Chi, should we leave tonight?" the old madam asked.

Chi Lian looked around, if she left, who would pack up the tents? She needed to get her shields and all the technology which she used.

"No, we can leave tomorrow. There is a lot of cleaning up to be done; I need to take back the tents. Besides, all the phoenix employees who worked the event are on leave for two days. There is no pressing need to be in the office tomorrow." She said after some careful thinking.

"In that case, we are going to help the guards with check out. A lot of people are leaving tonight; we don’t need stories of stolen property to be the conclusion of a perfect event."

He looked at Muyang and smiled, "Congratulations brother-in-law. We should grab a drink sometime." He left immediately after saying that.

"Congratulations brother-in-law." Chi Wei said and he followed Chi Rui. He may not have looked happy but he smiled briefly as he walked away. It was a good thing that he had an honest conversation with Muyang. From now on, his fist would happily kiss the lips of anyone that dared to badmouth his beloved sister.

"Congratulations brother-in-law. We should also grab a drink sometime" Chi Zimo was the last to step forward and he run after his brothers before his mother could pull his ear for daring to drink at his age.

"Should we go and help as well?" Papa Chi asked his wife.

"No, in-laws, stay behind, we need to drink and toast to such a happy union." The old master insisted. His butler had already delivered the special wine from Chi Lian’s barrels. "Tonight, we drink until we fall." The old master declared.
