Transmigration: Lady Chi Woos The Ice cold Professor Jun -
Chapter 143: Sitting ducks.
Chapter 143: Sitting ducks.
The royals were carefully blocked so he could not get to them and yet he was patiently waiting in the tree like any good hunter. If he was here for them, he was here on an impossible mission.
"Come on, move." She willed the shifter to shake his body even slightly so that she could take him out. The waiting game was exhausting; thirty minutes had already gone by. She was not a soldier anymore; the thrill of the hunt was not as exciting as it used to be. She had served her days of waiting in bushes and darkness to take out the enemy, she would rather be cuddling in front of a fire watching the movie with Muyang.
Her smart watch vibrated and she briefly glanced at it.
"Which tree are you hiding in?" the message from Muyang read.
"How did he figure it out so quickly?" she wondered.
"You keep forgetting his large genius brain; he can analyze patterns and make connections other people don’t easily notice. I really love Muyang, I love him so much." T4 gushed and showered Muyang with praises and worship. If they could physically meet, the fox would be kneeling before Muyang in worship.
"Send him to me." She said.
It did not take long for Muyang to wheedle himself up the tree and find a spot close to her. She acknowledged him with a nod of her head and her eyes went back to the rifle immediately.
"You don’t look so happy up here." He commented immediately.
"Try being happy with a branch pressed against your ass." She replied sarcastically.
He giggled briefly, "Would you prefer me to be pressed against it?" he joked.
"Try it and I will kick you out of this tree. This is a serious situation; this killer is too patient, whatever mission he is on, he is not leaving without accomplishing it so I cannot afford to be distracted by your charms."
"Hmm," he smiled cunningly, "We will talk about my charms later." He commented. "For now, how can I best assist you?"
She handed him the binoculars and asked him to keep a strict eye on the tree where the shifter was hiding.
"You know, this can be broken down easily. The first thing we should figure out is in which direction the shifter is facing." Muyang suggested. They were running out of time and no movement yet.
"Well, he is facing the South from first glance."
"So who does that rule out?"
"Hmmm, "she said thoughtfully, "It rules out the celebrities and any commoners. It also rules out the royals and any member of the aristocratic families."
"Who is left?" he asked patiently like a teacher.
"Uhm, it can’t be members of staff, if it was them, he would have taken them out on the very first day. The only other special target here is Minister Su."
He lightly tapped her ass and said "good job."
"No distractions." She shook her body to throw his hand off. "Whoever is giving him information must be really good because no one in the empire is supposed to know where Minister Su is. He did not advertise his itinerary or movements so how did they find him?"
"One doesn’t aim a gun at the minister without having some serious backing." Muyang figured.
"Do you think it’s the rebels?"
"No," he said instantly, "It’s too risky and too soon after the bombing screw up. This shifter assassin is careful, patient and arrogant. These are traits of a well trained private mercenary; there must be another organization behind him."
The leaves in the tree where the shifter was hiding shook slightly and her index finger tightened on the trigger. According to the footage on the screen, the angle of the shifter’s rifle had slightly shifted.
"Muyang," she asked, "Who is the other person in the direct line of fire beside the Minister?"
"That would be the mad genius Mujin."
"It’s him." She said immediately, the shifter is not here for the minister, he is a busy and visible man that can be killed from anywhere when he is carrying out official duties but that mad genius, I assume he only leaves his lab once in a while." She figured.
"Shit." Muyang cursed.
"Why are you cursing angrily?" she asked in surprise.
"Mujin is one of the heads of the main military and scientific labs of the empire. He heads a lot of important projects, if he dies all those projects come to a standstill. The empire will take another step back technology wise allowing others to get ahead of us."
"Not to mention private corporations which would love to slow down the empires technology growth curve. Whatever he is working on, if they can produce it, they can sell it to the empire and other empires at a high place." she jumped in with her own theory.
"Just like your robots."
"Yes, just like my robots. Imagine how much I can make if I sell them to the empire for military use. I would be swimming in wealth for the rest of my life."
Muyang pulled out his phone and sent a text. She didn’t need to take a guess to know that he was texting Minister Su. The two seemed to have some sort of relationship that she had yet to figure out.
"Tell Minister Su that their sniper should take the first shot and disarm him as soon as the fireworks go off. That will be the best possible time for the assassin to take out the mad genius sneakily. It will be loud and everyone will be excited so it will take a while for people to notice that someone has been shot dead."
"He doesn’t like your plan."
"He has no choice, we have five minutes left. I intend to maim the shifter without killing him. He knows that my rifle shoots ice bullets, they will paralyze him for a while and he can be arrested and interrogated for information. They get a dangerous assassin and I get my diamonds back. It’s a win win for all of us."
"Ten, nine, eight_" Muyang started the count down.
The movie ended and the excited audience loudly clapped and applauded. Wu Lian and his fellow actors moved to the stage and waved wildly at the screaming crowd. As they received their flowers, loud fireworks exploded in the sky which diverted everyone’s attention.
"Now, host."
Bang! Chi Lian took her shot immediately after whoever was working for the minister took his. Her rifle was one hundred percent accurate so she was sure she had hit the shifter in the shoulder.
"Did I get him?" she asked Muyang who was watching the scene through his binoculars. She had yet to see him fall out of the tree or see some commotion around it indicative of an arrest.
Within no time, she saw what she was expecting, the shifter being carted away roughly by special soldiers.
"Nice shot." Muyang complimented.
"Not good host, the drones have caught wind of another shot being fired, it seems to be aiming directly at the shifter."
As soon as that shot went off, she warned Muyang. "Get down; there is another shooter, a long range sniper."
"What the_" Muyang ducked down immediately and warned minister Su.
Chi Lian gazed into the darkness, looking through the virtual screen to find the second shooter. How in the world did they miss such a vital detail?
The first shot whizzed right past her head and landed in the tree. Thankfully the shooter had missed but the danger was not gone. If they stayed in their current position they were sitting ducks.
"Dang it!" She cursed.
