Chapter 601: Mega Su’s popularity.
Her laughter son died out and she took a deep breath. "My response to that is that you have lost your damn mind and maybe next time___, perhaps. When you make it back safely it will be the first thing we do together."
Esong actually expected her to turn him down straight away. Her response impressed him. She would not be counted out of an adventure like that just yet.
"You will be amazed with how freeing it is." he told her.
Then, he said nothing more to convince her but held his pinky finger out.
"Let’s make a promise, or swear on it."
Amused, she looked at him. "Pulling the hook like children, really?"
He nodded.
"You never cease to amaze me Esong Wu." she told him.
She put her pinky in his and they pulled the hook as he wanted, giggling silly just before she yawned.
It didn’t escape his eyes that she had yawned. She had probably had a long day but she would not be closing her eyes as long as Justin was awake and Justin was probably not going to sleep any time soon. No unless he exhausted himself.
He turned his head back and peeked around the pillar. Justin was still whispering to those crickets. If his son had that much to say, he must have been keeping a lot stored up inside. As long as he was getting it off his chest, Esong didn’t mind spending all night on the roof, waiting patiently. If Scarlet wanted, she could sleep right here in his arms.
"How are things moving along?" She tapped his thigh and asked.
"Fast. We are in the final days. Have you heard anything from Mega X1? It’s been months now of waiting. I am beginning to think that it lost it’s way or it was captured."
And yet you still plan to go, she thought. She didn’t share that thought though and said,"It’s making it’s way back. I just don’t know if it will be in time to find you here or there. I told Alex to start data extraction as soon as possible. If we can get the data even before he returns....."
She could hardly continue as another yawn escaped her lips.
"You are beyond exhausted." he told her. He shifted her body and put her on his laps. "Just sleep."
She twisted her body around in search of the most comfortable angle. A complaint couldn’t help rumbling from her mouth. "I am always exhausted lately, cranky, moody and puking often. How have you not noticed all these changes in me? I swear when they say men are blind, they mean one man, you."
He shook his head, denying her accusation. "I notice things. Like your sister Carolyn. She was so excited to see Markay two weeks ago that she pushed a horse accidentally and it kicked her. She got up and pretended that she had simply bent down to pick up her ring."
"Tch!" Scarlet responded.
Why was he noticing random useless things instead of her swelling stomach. She decided to test the extremes to which he was blind.
"Have you noticed that my mother’s pregnant belly is now visible? Everywhere she goes on the Blue star, people congratulate her."
Esong snorted and followed the snort with laughter. "Your mother is famous. Not just on the Blue star but the empire as a whole. According to Folsom, gossip among his sisters is that a few noble women have started considering natural pregnancies.
Oh and the commoners, apparently have a new saying. When one is asked if they want to have more than three children, they respond, ’Who am I, labor queen Mega Su?"
Scarlet wanted to laugh at that, but she couldn’t because she was the reason as to why that saying had become famous in the first place. She had said it as a joke to her friends, Jelly and Mina. One of them must have repeated it and then it continued to travel at the speed of a racing horse escaping a wild fire. If her mother ever came to know that she was the one who started it, she would pinch her ears surely.
"Let’s go bike riding." he said, suddenly.
"Again with that." She answered with a very loud eyeroll.
"No, not that. What I mean is that Justin’s crickets are flying away so let’s go as a family right now. One bike, Justin at the front, me in the middle and you at the back. He will love it and he will go to bed with a smile on his face."
She lifted her body slowly and sat upright. The suggestion he had just made, she was considering it seriously. Anything that would put a smile on Justin’s face she was willing to do.
Justin himself was already running back to them but he was careless in his movements and he tripped over his own foot. The angle in which he was meant to land was too close to the ledge that one small mistake would send him over it. Scarlet lunged forward without thinking, shrieking something about him watching out.
She must have forgotten about her pregnancy in that moment as the instinct to protect Justin took over all of her senses.
Esong used his mental strength to pull them both back, shocked out of his mind.
"That’s it, no children on the roof." he declared. He carried Justin in one hand and Scarlet in the other. "We are going bike riding, that’s it."
"I am not a child." Scarlet declared.
While she made the declaration, she winced and twisted her shoulders. Something was causing her some discomfort at the back. It almost felt like an intrusion of something but when she used her powers to peek, there was nothing.
It must be the stress, she thought. She didn’t dwell on it because the irritation went away just as easily as it came. More importantly, her mind was already on Justin who needed talking to and a stern reminder.
"Baby, you cannot go around running carelessly. You must always be careful especially in dangerous places. Do you know what would have happened if you fell in the wrong direction? Do you want mommy to get a heart attack? Don’t you know that you are my number one?"
"I am right here." Esong said.
"Shhh!" Scarlet told him.
Father and son both endured a very long talk on personal safety which somehow spilled into fire safety tips and stranger danger warnings.
When she finally finished, they were getting onto the motorcycle and Esong was biting back the urge to remind her that he was also not a child. Stranger danger advise to Justin sure, but to him, it was a waste as he was an adult.
He strapped a helmet on Justin and wrapped a cloak around his body. Then, he did the same for Scarlet.
"Now let’s talk about safety tips around a swimming pool." She peeked over Esong’s head and said.
Justin moaned and Esong stepped in. "Scar, my dear, it’s your turn to shush so that we can enjoy this family bike ride. Hold on tight because we are going to go at the speed of light."
"Not so fast, unless you want to hear about the dangers of over speeding." She warned him.
Esong bent his head down and whispered to Justin, "Next time, we will leave her behind. It will be just us men. "
Like a flower blooming in the spring, Justin’s face lit up because he had been called a man.
"Yes, just us men." he repeated back to his father.
