Chapter 571: Ears in the air.
Lanta had truly disappeared to the underworld after leaving the castle and just as she told Scarlet she went in search of Severus. She searched for the energy of the hound and traced it to the lonely river village but she could not get in.
This place was hard to get into like the palace of the god of death.
"What to do?" She asked herself.
She sharpened her bird hearing and enhanced it in hopes of listening in on the conversations in the village. If she heard the hound’s voice, then she could send him a message through the wind.
Her problem was that there was a lot of loud fighting going in the village. She perched on the highest tree branch she could find and dulled all of her other senses except for hearing. She would find that hound no matter what.
Meanwhile, Severus and his father were still facing off. They had stopped circling around each other and were now standing still. The wind bristled past them both, passing through their fur.
His father had more fur than he did, and the hairs danced with the wind. His red eyes that had dancing flames which used to frighten Severus as a child now looked quite ordinary.
Severus’s own eyes had a flame dancing, an extraordinary green flame.
"So, are you going to attack me or not?" Severus asked his father.
"You should not play with things you don’t understand. That flame has made you arrogant." His father answered. "If you are not here to talk about resuming your duties then why are you here?"
His father sat down, a move which surprised Severus. Apparently he had decided not to kill his disrespectful son.
Had the lord hound mellowed with the years?
"I need to borrow five of your strongest hounds." Severus told him.
His father snorted and sneered. "You have become stupid during your time outside it seems. Why would I give you five of my strongest hounds? Do I need to tell you to look down again and see the reapers training?
What do you think my strongest hounds are doing right now? They are obviously training as well. Why would I pull them and give them to you?"
Severus teleported himself and sat down in front of his father, on equal ground.
His father sneered but did not move to push him away or attempt to kill him.
"Do you know what this war is about or have the deities asked you to prepare blindly?" Severus asked.
"Of course I know, all those natural born reapers down there know it too. Your female hound...er, human, no reaper is pregnant." His father answers.
Severus gasped and slid backwards. His body went tumbling down the roof but his father grabbed him before he could fall further.
The save was not appreciated by Severus because his father grabbed him by the back of his neck, holding him in the air like a small pup before returning him to where he had been sitting.
"Don’t do that!!" Severus scratched the back of his neck, more embarrassed than angry.
His father chuckled loudly. "A pup is a pup. I have thousands of years on you Severus."
If finding out that his father was aware of Scarlet’s pregnancy shocked him into sliding down the roof, being addressed by his name almost sent him into a faint. His father only addressed hounds he respected by their names. Everyone else was pup or some other name he deemed fit.
He slid down again and used his claws to hold on to the roof. His father, too eager to help, repeated the move of grabbing Severus by the back of his neck like a little pup and held him up, dangling him in the air.
"Hey guys, look, my son came to visit." He roared through the skies.
Most of the reapers on the river or in the village looked up and managed to see what Severus was sure was the most embarrassing moment in his life. The way his father had carried him reminded him strangely of a moment in that nature movie he watched with Scarlet. A mother lion was carrying her cub in the jaws of her mouth.
He was not in his father’s jaws but he was in his fangs, not much different.
This image was surely going to make it to the forum.
"Which one?" Someone yelled.
"Right, you have like a million of them." Another voice said.
"The thirty first." His father answered.
"Aah! The one who gives you body aches and headaches because he won’t mate." One of the reapers said.
The reapers laughed while Severus longed to bury his face in the ground.
"Put me down." He mumbled.
His father gladly did. He was in a very happy mood. Apparently, embarrassing his son had done wonders for his mood.
"Stop discussing me with your friends." He told his father as he scratched his neck.
Severus did not appreciate being the topic of the day on everyone’s lips in the underworld.
"Then stop making your mother worry. Do you know how much she talks my ears off about your poor life choices. The woman has thousands of children but somehow a week doesn’t go by without your name crossing her lips. What am I supposed to do about you not wanting to mate? Should I hold you down and force you to do the act with a female hound? You need to get your priorities straight son." His father responded.
There was frustration on his face which somewhat pleased Severus.
"She is not a woman." Severus said.
"Shhh!," his father told him. Then he growled out loudly as if he was about to attack. "Little bird, don’t make me pull out your claws." He said into the air.
Lanta, where she was, fell out of the tree. Not only had the lord hound warned her but he had also launched a spiritual attack.
"Fucking hounds." She muttered as she stood up and dusted her body off.
Severus’s father looked at him and said, "There were ears in the air. I think you best go now because one of Carnelia’s little birds is looking for you. We don’t want unnecessary eyes on the lonely river village right now."
Severus had a feeling that Lanta was the bird his father was referring to. But, he had come for extra hounds and he didn’t want to leave empty handed.
"I still need strong hounds." He told his father.
"Go and find your old friends Severus. I am afraid I have no hounds to spare for you right now. The generals have claimed them all as partners. And don’t just pick any hound to protect the children. Not all of them are as motivated or personally involved as you are. It’s better to surround those children with pups than adult hounds with personal opinions and already assigned loyalties." His father advised him.
His father raised a paw and flung him out of the village before he could say more or ask questions. He still wanted to know which deity had told him about the children and how many more reapers knew.
