Scarlet’s hands that were still waving around dropped, and so did her mouth as it fell open. There was no way she had misheard those words. Carolyn was having second thoughts about marrying the incoming crown prince of their empire.

"Oh God, she is going to get us all beheaded." Scarlet mumbled.

The emperor, no, it was the empress who would have them all beheaded if her son was humiliated before the moment of his glory arrived. The Su’s would be wiped out of the empire like the Varakas family. Scarlet would have to plan a rebellion and declare the Blue star an independent state.

"No you can’t. Grim reapers can’t involve themselves in acts that lead to massive death of humans directly." A voice in her mind reminded her.

"Thank you Severus." She replied sarcastically.

Carolyn grabbed Scarlet’s hands and said in a needy voice that begged for understanding. "It’s just that the whole thing is happening too soon and I don’t even get a say in anything. I can’t even choose what my own hair will be styled like for my engagement. Not even the lipstick for crying out loud!. I wanted red but I was told light pink would make me more relatable. How the fuck is that even possible? I feel like a doll being held down and then pulled in different directions by so many people. In the last two days I have cried a lot more than I did when we first moved here."

"You cried!" Scarlet said. Her voice held some surprise because this was the first she was hearing about it.

"Of course I cried." Carolyn answered loudly, and snappishly. "It’s not just you, Fey, Halley and mother that have a right to cry. I can cry too you know."

"Got it Caro, you can go ahead and cry as much as you want." Scarlet replied.

Carolyn nodded. "I have just been wondering you know. If I am crying this much before the engagement then what will happen when it’s time for the wedding or after? Should I be getting engaged with all this rage and doubt within me? Maybe the whole thing should be called off."

She was still talking when Scarlet out of the blue put her hands around Carolyn’s neck and stunned her into silence.

"What are you doing?" she asked her.

Scarlet tilted Carolyn’s head at a weird angle and replied, "When people are moving into a new house, they measure the windows for drapes. I am measuring your neck as I try to figure out which size sword will be used to slice your neck and mine off."

"Heey!" Carolyn drawled out a whimper and pushed Scarlet away. "This is why I didn’t want to say anything. I knew that no one would understand me, not even you."

Scarlet decided to get serious and address her sister’s fears, putting aside her own for a moment. This time round, she was the one who grabbed her sister’s face so that she could speak to her clearly while they looked into each other’s eyes.

"You are going to get engaged and you are going to get married. Do you know how I know that?"

Carolyn shook her head.

"Because you love that idiot prince the same way I love my Esong. Markay almost drove me insane when he revealed what I had done to you in the past. You were livid with him but you still stayed with him after everything. You stood by him even when Adler wanted to kill him and you defended him to the entire family.

That idiot, forgive me for calling him that but sometimes he can be an idiot. He plotted to protect his own sister by having her marry into our family after drugging Adler or Beord and all you did was cut off his hair and give him a warning. You still stayed with him anyway because you love him.

Most importantly, you are going to marry him because you want to protect us all. He is the next emperor and you are going to be the empress. We Su’s will be untouchable with your backing. Think about the way we were cast out of the capital in shame and mocked by other noble families because we had no power. Now, the family they mocked has produced the next empress and we will be returning to the capital in a blaze of glory."

Scarlet’s eyes glistened and she did what she usually did with Justin or Esong.

She brought Carolyn’s forehead to hers and their heads touched. Scarlet laughed and said, "You will be Carolyn the great. Stories will be written about you and songs in your honor will be sung. You will be the champion of change that this empire needs.

I know that you are scared because things are going to change but change is inevitable. Nothing stays the same forever sister, not even love. Sometimes it’s strong and sometimes it withers."

"I am so scared." Carolyn admitted. A lot of responsibility was going to be thrust onto her shoulders. She didn’t know if she could handle it.

"I know." Scarlet replied. "But you are a woman of the Su family. If our mother can produce nine children the natural way and I can rule the Blue star then you can rule the empire."

Carolyn’s shoulders started to tremble and suddenly, she started to cry. The two sisters slipped into a hug, holding each other tightly. Scarlet cried silently while Carolyn wailed loudly and bitterly.

Everything that she had been holding inside in the recent days came tumbling out of her in liquid form, pouring from her eyes in the form of tears. The emotions that the two sisters were expressing went beyond just comforting each other.

What Carolyn desperately needed to hear was that at the end of this uncertain road, she would not be alone. She was going to be required to spend more time in the capital now, away from her family and her home.

She would be among strangers and none of them could be trusted. In the capital, every servant in most households was a spy for someone. She needed family with her.

For a good ten minutes, they just embraced and cried until Scarlet felt a cathartic relief coursing through her body.

She kept on patting Carolyn’s back and said to her, "I will be there every step of the way, holding your hand. If it means moving to the capital with you I will move to the capital. There is nothing more that I can do for the Blue star now anyway."

"Swear it." Carolyn loosened her hold on Scarlet and faced her.

She did something very childish which made Scarlet giggle. Carolyn held up her right hand pinky finger and thrust it at her.

"Swear it." She demanded.

Scarlet hooked her own pinky around Carolyn’s and said in a calm reassuring voice, "I swear."

Carolyn suddenly wailed again and threw herself into Scarlet’s arms.

"Now what?" Scarlet asked her.

As she sniveled, Carolyn replied, "I used to think Adler was your favorite."

"Aah, this crazy bride." Scarlet mumbled. She could not resist laughing a little bit at Carolyn. Even in the midst of tears, her sister somehow felt the need to fight for favor or prove that she was the best sibling.

"You are my favorite sibling." Scarlet told her.

"Swear it." Carolyn said.

Scarlet slapped her on the back lightly and said, "Enough with the swearing. Let’s go ride some horses when you are all cried out. Later, at night, we can have a sleep over. All the Su siblings, just as we used to do when we were younger."
