Chapter 544: A cold war
Chapter 544: A cold war
Esong arrived a few minutes later and he came to the dining room immediately because Alex had informed him that Scarlet, Justin and his grandparents were having dinner. He found them there, eating quietly as they watched a cartoon called Bixy, the brave mecha. It was now Justin’s favorite cartoon ever since he got a mecha.
The trouble had been diverted obviously because Scarlet was there at the table watching Justin eat.
"I came as soon as possible." He said loudly, announcing his presence and keepinghis eyes on his wife.
Scarlet gave him a once over and looked at her plate. Her body language was loud and clear, she was not happy to see him.
"Hello daddy, welcome home." Justin in a more welcoming voice addressed his father. He had no idea that his mother and father had some troubles.
"Thank you Justin." Esong slid over casually into a chair next to Justin and touched his head, ruffling his hair. "I heard that you were giving your grandparents a hard time. What did I say I would do if such behavior occurred?"
"Boarding school in the capital." Justin replied in a small sad voice.
He was chewing food and the word boarding came out sounding like bwording. He looked at Esong with apologetic tear filled eyes.
"I don’t want to go." He said.
"Then be on your best behavior or it’s bye-bye mommy." Esong warned him.
The boy’s overly spoiled nature would become a problem in future if it was not rectified. He had seen many children of noble families become spoiled and useless that their families hid them away or checked them into different facilities were they were put to sleep in pods for a few years while their minds were rewired. He did not want this to be the future of his son.
Cecily noticed that Scarlet had not offered Esong any food. That was unusual for the wife who always had a smile, hug and warm food waiting for her husband. It seemed as if the husband and wife were experiencing some problems which turned the air in the room suddenly uncomfortable. Her eyes moved from her to him and then to Etienne.
"We should leave." She whispered to him.
Etienne looked at the plate of unfinished food in front of him. He was unwilling to leave it behind for any reason. Unless a mutated beast attacked, he had no plans of moving.
"Let’s go." She whispered again and picked up her plate.
Etienne looked at her arms and the plate then it clicked. They could actually go with their food, something he should have figured out sooner.
"We will be excusing ourselves." He said.
A series of good night wishes were traded and the two elders of the Wu family left.
Esong sighed and looked at his wife that had said a word to him for two days now. She was also not sharing a bed with him, taking baths with him or sharing her home cooked meals with him.
All these things, he was missing terribly. What he missed most was her sweet smile. He wondered when this cold war between them would end? Perhaps starting out with a neutral topic of conversation would dissolve some ice.
"General Sang has recovered so the news of his attempt to search your mind illegally will be officially released. All three agencies have concluded their investigations. Those tribunal officers will be leaving for the capital tomorrow."
"Go wash your hands and then join Eden and Tion." she told Justin.
Justin slid down from his chair and licked his lips.
"Thank you for dinner mommy." he said with an adorable smile on his lips.
Scarlet kissed his cheeks and he run off.
As soon as he left, she abandoned the table and carried the dirty dishes to the sink where she busied herself washing them.
Esong was unwilling to give up so he followed her to the sink and put his arms around her waist.
Scarlet used her elbow to hit him in the tummy and turned around. She pushed him away and stared at him with a burning glare in her eyes.
The frustration which had been bubbling under Esong’s surface for a while snapped. "Are you still fucking mad at me? It’s been two days for crying out loud." he bellowed.
"Are you still planning to form a team that will go into that space crack?" she asked him.
He run his hands through his hair and exhaled. "I told you that this is necessary for all of our sakes. The beasts are evolving and becoming smarter. Those wind dracos that we fought last winter attacked us in formation. We discovered a mutated beast in the water which can hide it’s presence by freezing itself. Imagine what would happen if a thousand of those came through the crack. The scientists said that we can understand the situation best by going inside."
"Then let the scientists go." she yelled with strength. "Why does it have to be you?"
So what if he was the mecha king? So what if he was a mecha warrior? He was her husband and she was pregnant. She needed him and the children would need him as well. What if he died in that mysterious world?
Esong felt guilty because it didn’t have to be him but a voice in his mind kept saying that it had to be him of the men who volunteered to go in there would not make it out alive.
He approached her slowly and touched her face. His dark eyes stared into her grey ones and apologized and they pleaded for understanding.
"Because, it must be me." he said in a soft voice.
He lowered his head and rested his forehead against hers. Slowly they breathed in and out together. One of his hands trailed downwards and he touched her stomach. He moved it in circles as he had seen her do many times before.
"It has to be me." he said again, in an even more determined voice than before.
Scarlet shoved him away and laughed dryly. "I guess the empire’s greatest mecha warrior is going to choose the empire over his family. The people are so lucky to have you." she said dryly.
They had already had this conversation and it had gone exactly as it was going right now. Between then and now, nothing had changed at all. He was still determined to go even though Mega X1 had not returned as of yet. They did not know what dangers awaited them in that unknown world. How could he have volunteered to go without talking to her about it first? That question had been heavy on her mind for two days now. So much for marriage being a partnership, she thought.
He took a step closer with a pained look on his face.
"Scar...." he called her name desperately.
"I don’t want to talk to you right now. I cannot deal with this, it’s too much. I will be sleeping with Justin tonight. You do what you want."
