Chapter 533: Detective Scarlet.
On Nordem, Scarlet who was supposed to be tracking the shard of misfortune ended up finding something else instead, a person of interest in her investigation into Esong’s secrets.
She was certainly happy to see the suddenly less than talkative Frost who had not responded to a single text of hers since he left the Blue star.
Frost turned around and attempted to escape but Scarlet was quicker and she trapped his leg.
Slowly, she pulled him towards her and said, "I was right about that good feeling, the south has a gift for me."
Frost scratched his ear like a guilty man and smiled weirdly.
"Look what we have have here, Frost the rare reaper." she said sarcastically.
"Scarlet, how is your son? Has he opened the gifts yet? I got him a really cool spinning snowmobile. It can also be used on water and in air."
"He loved it." Scarlet lied.
Justin had not yet opened his birthday gifts.
"Awesome, now how about you let me go so that we can locate that shard and wrap up the mission." he said.
"Not before you tell me how you know my husband Frosty. I want all the details, don’t skimp on anything."
"It’s nothing really." he said in a high pitched voice. He also scratched the tip of his nose.
She could tell that he was lying. People scratched noses or their voices became pitchy when they lied. It was human psychology.
"I can keep you with me forever if you refuse to talk. I think you have forgotten that we are immortal Frost. Perhaps you could take a vacation on the Blue star. As the pet or favorite of the gods in our realm I could make such a request."
"Is that really necessary?" he asked her.
"Answers Frosty, why are you avoiding me?"
He lowered his hand and sighed. "Fine, I will tell you. I met him when he was on some kind of mission with other mecha warriors from your planet. We were all searching for energy mines on unclaimed planets. That’s it, there is no secret that I am hiding."
"I don’t believe you." she told him.
Why the change in his tone or body language if he had nothing to hide?
"What world is it?" she asked.
"Don’t know, like I said, it was an unclaimed planet." he answered casually with a shrug.
Inside, he sighed in relief because there were many such worlds. Some were empty and others were barren. There were those that had civilizations but poor ones. Sometimes, such worlds had minerals which they didn’t know about and could not protect. Stronger empires were always searching for such worlds to conquer.
"Where was it located? Give me the coordinates." she used her fingers to ask for them.
Frost blinked and stared at her in disbelief.
"Coordinates!!’ he said, outraged.
Why was she asking for so many details as if she was an investigator.
Scarlet nodded.
"I don’t know. There was nothing useful on that world so I erased it from my memory. Besides, when your husband and his men arrived, we were leaving. It’s not like we talked much or shared a meal. I barely remember the man."
Scarlet held up her hand and started counting down the facts he was aware of.
"You don’t know the name of this mystery world, you don’t remember where it is and you hardly remember my husband. Your mind seems to be a blank slate Frost, a very convenient blank slate."
"But I am telling you where I met him on this world. I have left nothing out." he assured her. "Maybe he remembers me because of my snow white hair. Look, my eyebrows are white too, and so are most Terans. It’s not difficult to remember someone who looks like me. Unless you meet us in a group then it becomes weird because everyone has snow white white hair."
She tilted her head and said, "You are talking too much."
"Mmm." he answered.
"When people talk too much they are lying." She moved in closer and invaded his personal space. Curiously, she studied his face as she wondered what it was that he was not saying, "What are you hiding Frost?"
"Oh-hooo, why is one of our friends interrogating the other?"
Scarlett’s little interrogation session was broken up with the arrival of Ezrah, who she had not come across on this world before. Coincidence___, she thought not. She let Frost go, albeit unwillingly.
"What are you doing here Ezrah?" she turned her gaze on the friendly warrior reaper.
"Reaping." Ezrah’s hands moved around in a circular manner. "Look around you, this shithole world sent out a cry for help for every available reaper that has some free time and I happened to have some free time on my hands."
If she thought that Scarlet bought that excuse, then she was lying to herself. As far as she was concerned, Frost had sent out a cry for help.
Ezrah came around and laid a hand on Scarlet’s shoulder. "I can see why you guardian reapers are having a hard time finishing your mission. You are playing around, or so it seems. Should they have given the job to us?"
Scarlet used her powers to throw Ezrah’s hand off her shoulder. "If you are trying to piss me off, I should inform you that you are slowly getting there. In the time you have wasted here, that evil soul has gobbled up ten souls."
Ezrah shook her head and shrugged.
"They outnumber us here and they don’t care if we are around. While I am getting rid of one, another two feet away is doing the same thing. They are not even collecting anymore but stuffing themselves as if they are preparing to hibernate for the winter."
As Ezrah was completing her words, Flan dragged the evil soul over and Scarlet collected it. Even as it was being dragged by a hound, the evil soul refused to let go of the soul it was eating.
"Not your job, friend, no-no. Yours is the mission." Ezrah reminded her.
What she said, Scarlet was already aware of and she needed no reminder of.
"And that is why I am leaving." Scarlet told her. She waved goodbye to Frost. "See you around. Stop hiding from me and ignoring my texts."
She and the hounds teleported away, heading to the north.
"You, talk." Ezrah pointed at Frost.
She had that same look in her eyes which Scarlet had earlier. Ezrah was just as suspicious as Scarlet had been about Frost and Esong.
"About what?" a confused Frost asked.
"About her husband and where it is you know him from. I have known you far longer than she has and I know for certain that he was acutely aware when the deities left that party. Frost, you have seen him in the underworld before, haven’t you?"
Frost was warm and innocent when Scarlet had been questioning him but as soon as Ezrah asked him that, he suddenly turned cold and gave her a chilling look.
"Some things are best left as they are Ezrah. There are certain levels of authority in the underworld and whatever is going on is not the concern of reapers at our level."
He teleported away quickly and went to the underworld.
Left standing idly alone, Ezrah was puzzled and worried for Scarlet. Cold Frost was rare but he was seen when trouble was coming. What had Scarlet got herself into?
"Damn," she said to herself.
