Chapter 519: All hail the governor
She would have to read those reports from home or during the party when Justin was having fun with his friends.
A streak of lightning was reflected in the windows of the building. A few seconds later, roaring loud thunder followed. A loud high pitched scream immediately followed.
"Mommy!!" she heard Justin’s frightened scream.
She turned her head to her son and saw him trembling in Cecily’s hands. His hands were covering his ears and he was looking at her with a frightened look on his face.
She opened her hands and extended them out. She assumed that Cecily would let him come to her but the older woman shook her head. She looked at the officials who were still in the building and the reporters.
Scarlet nodded, she didn’t care. She was not just a governor, she was a mother of a young child.
Cecily sighed and carried Justin over, handing him to Scarlet.
"Let’s continue." she said as she covered him with a baby blanket from head to toe.
In the crowd of reporters, Jelly turned to the cameraman controlling the drone and whispered, did you get vivid images.
The camera man nodded.
This images would surely trend, many women would fins it adorable. Jelly was already coming up with the best headline for the image.
Those in the meeting remained rathe silent which caused Scarlet to raise her eyebrows questioningly. Was that all? Could she address the citizens now?
"Are we done?" she asked the ministers.
"Uhm, the ministry of disaster preparedness is proposing an emergency infusion of funds into their ministry given the circumstances." Blad said.
The minister stood up before Scarlet even called for her.
"Minister Anna Clair Charise, governor. As you can already tell, our ministry is going to be burdened with the task of providing funds to rebuild the broken city. In addition to that, there is property damage and compensation to those who were injured by the unknown creatures. I think the ministry of defense should do the compensation since they were at fault for letting the shield down in the first place."
A few voices in the room murmured at her suggestion, especially from the officials who were close to Adler. He had left the building to find the footage Scarlet wanted and check on other shields.
"In that case the god of the sky should compensate us for the rain." Someone said.
"Or the god of water since this whole mess was created by a flood." another disgruntled voice said.
Minister Anna glared at the other minister and rolled her eyes. "I don’t think the ministry of defense police has anything useful to say in this meeting. Unless you are here to slack off instead of working." she said.
"At least we have work." he responded.
A few people chuckled because the ministry of disaster preparedness was the most idle ministry on the Blue star. They did not do much and most of their work would be in the last three months of the year when the mutated beasts attacked.
Scarlet cleared her throat to stop them from turning this into an us vs them situation.
"It seems like there is nothing urgent left to discuss. Those of you who still have unanswered queries please contact my office and I will squeeze you in when I have time. It’s time for me to address the citizens and accept questions from the reporters so I demand some quiet for a few minutes."
The drones moved closer and a dozen hands were raised.
Blad did his job and started pointing out who should ask. First priority as always was given to BSTV.
"I am reporter Jelly for BSTV. Before I ask my question I would like to wish young lord Justin a happy fifth birthday in advance."
Other reporters shook their heads, and other scoffed. Reporter Jelly sure knew which boots to lick to ensure that she was always the governing family’s favorite reporter.
"My first question I am sure you are already expecting governor Scarlet. Is there any truth to the rumors on the limitations of food?"
"Thank you on Justin’s behalf and yes on the limitations." she answered.
The reporters went wild, and suddenly they started hurling questions at her loudly.
"If you do not behave we can stop here." she said.
They calmed down effectively but looked at her sharply. It was the one thing which had brought most of them out. It was the biggest issue in the empire_, had been for a week now.
"Please kindly elaborate on your answer." Jelly requested.
Scarlet did not hold back, and she leaned forward. "It has come to my notice that some citizens especially here on the Blue star are purchasing things in excess when they don’t have proper storage devices. Such a habit has resulted in food wastage which needs to be curbed. There will be more on this matter on the official communication page of my office and that of the ministry of agriculture. I would like to make it clear that as of today the total export of fruits, cocoa, sugar and other things has been put to a stop. Within an hour all these things will be available again for purchase as usual."
In different households across the Sun star, those who were watching the session turned press conference jumped up and down in joy. Others hurried to supermarkets or online shops to wait and be first in line to purchase the goods.
A new hash tag was quickly started on star net.
#All hail governor Scarlet.
"Next." she said.
Blad pointed to another reporter.
"Do you think you overreacted last week when someone attacked you in what is known as the deadly tomato attack?"
"No." she answered. "Next," she added.
That reporter wanted to further build on the question but he did not get the chance as Blad pointed to someone else.
"It is said that the nobles in the capital are unhappy with your dominance over the Blue star and maltreatment and disrespect of them. How do you intend to rectify that?"
She tilted her head and read the name of the media house for which this reporter was working. He was someone from the capital, his vest had the words Capital media across the chest. He probably worked for a noble family given his attempt to corner her.
She had no intention to rectify anything and she would make it clear right now.
"This is my planet, even though we are part of the Sunstar. As the governor I am allowed to make the rules as I please. I have not begged any noble to move here. On the contrary, they are the ones who want to move here which I am okay with. As long as they are willing to follow the laws of the Blue star.
Every star planet has it’s individual laws in addition of the laws of the empire and the Blue star is no different. I am not the first and will not be the last governor to dictate how things should be run on their planet. If my laws make them uncomfortable, I suggest they stay where they are most uncomfortable.
In fact, let me make this clear before you give people the wrong assumption. I have not crossed paths with many nobles ever since I moved here. All this maltreatment and whatever is utter nonsense. Next."
"Where have you been for the past one week?"
"The Citadel, the gaming city which will be officially opened tomorrow in celebration of my son’s birthday. Next."
