Chapter 485: Into the maze.
Chapter 485: Into the maze.
Scarlet was about to land a blow on the life angel when someone beat her to it, another harpy that came out of nowhere.
The harpy grabbed the angel by the wings and flung her all the way across the room roughly.
"Woah." she said.
"No time, hurry." the voice which she had heard before in her mind told her.
Who was that? she wondered. Was this what the old deity meant when he said that she would have help?
Also how had the number of contenders for the grand prize increased suddenly? Scarlet could easily count thirty or so people now.
"Now." The voice yelled at her.
Severus grabbed her from the back and they entered the room.
Just like everyone else, when they entered the room, they came to a stop as they found themselves in a myriad of confusion. This was no room, it was a maze of thick trees and solid walls. One that looked endless and appeared to have no beginning or end.
It had twisting corridors and the trees swayed and their branches moved looking very much alive.
One of the trees had branches that appeared to be clapping excitedly.
"Creepy," Scarlet thought.
It seemed that the maze was created to make it fair for everyone as it went all the way up to the ceiling. Even the creatures wings would have to navigate it on foot like everybody else.
While Scarlet looked around daze, others passed her and run in blindly.
"What next?" Scarlet asked the voice in her mind.
"Find the center, hurry." the voice said.
Severus, center. We need to get to the center." she said.
She armed herself, soul binding rope in one hand and scythe in the other.
"Hop on, You will tell me where to go." Severus told her.
She climbed onto Severus’s back and he took off running. She had studied that map on the doors really carefully and had a vague idea on where to go.
However, there had also been many patterns on that door so she could not say with one hundred percent certainty that she was taking the right direction to the center.
If only the voice in her mind acted like a GPS for her and told her to turn left or right. How awesome would that be?
Severus grabbed someone by the mouth like a little doll and tossed them out of the way.
"Your left." Scarlet told him.
As soon as they turned to their left, the trees started moving inward, stabbing whoever was in the way with their sharp tipped branches.
"Turn back." she shouted at him.
"Hold on." Severus told her.
She tightened her arms around his neck and then he leaped sounded, gripping onto the trees and jumping from tree to tree to make their escape faster.
They ended up in a windy path that looked like the body of a moving serpent. The knowledge of the map she had seen on the doors, leading to a weird knot at the center.
Come to think of it, she had seen a few such paths, five of them to be precise.
She took a deep breath and told Severus, "Follow this path but we should be cautious as much as they are rushing."
She could hear screams of pain now, yelps and tearing of flesh.
The maze was quite brutal, it was nowonder that tree was clapping excitedly.
Either the maze, or the contenders were killing themselves.
She considered herself lucky that she was the only one on this path. If she played her cards right, she would be the first to the center.
The further deeper she went inside, the darker it became, so dark that even her grim reaper vision was not adequate enough.
She brought out an energy stone lamp and held it up with her hand.
Aside from getting darker, whispers started coming from the trees, sinister whispers that were meant to cause fear.
"You will die here, you will never leave this mausoleum. Just like hundreds of thousands that came before you you will stay here with us."
A breeze of cold air floated past her and she inhaled.
"Fuck you." she told the wind.
The wind grew stronger, the energy lamp flickered on and off and Scarlet’s heart trembled a bit.
"Can you smell that?" Severus asked her.
"Smell what?" she asked him.
"Something, I don’t know. I think we are approaching water now and there is something in the water." He told her.
He had barely said this when someone screamed and a nine headed monster made a very loud and very magnificent appearance.
"Damn." Scarlet said.
Severus looked up and said, "I am pretty sure that the one who has screamed is that betrayer Ramslin. At least something good has happened, he has been eliminated."
One of the angels found Scarlet, the male one and he dropped something in the water that lit up the entire place turning it sunny and bright.
Scarlet put out the energy lamp and kept it away. There was no need for it anymore now that all was bright and clear.
She and Severus stopped moving. Scarlet leaped off his back and sighed. Her right hand tightened around the scythe.
"I guess I am going to do some beheading now."
It was unavoidable because on the wall behind the nine headed monster sitting in the bosom of a small statue of the water god was a very shiny black and white pearl. It was the thing whose energy Scarlet had been feeling all along since she dived into the water.
She could feel the power it held, as if it had life. She could swear that it was pulsing as if it had a heartbeat.
"So, do you know what that is?" she asked Severus.
"A soul growing pearl. It can change any soul into a pure soul, even yours. It’s the most desirable of all soul pearls in existence and also the rarest. Only one appears in a cycle of ten millenniums." He spoke in wonder and his voice was filled with amazement.
"So I must have it." Scarlet said determinedly.
What did Maddox say, a pure soul and a strong one were as different as a grim reaper and a deity.
This was her chance to make up for that difference.
"Yes," Severus, said determinedly as well, "You must have it."
"Hey reaper, do you have a plan?" the life angel asked her.
She looked at the angel, a bit perturbed.
"You sound as if you want to work together." she answered curiously.
"There are three of us here and it has nine heads. I figure if we take on three heads each then it will be much simpler. The first to behead their three heads or get to the pearl first wins." he replied.
"Don’t trust him." The voice which had been guiding her said.
Of course she had no intentions of trusting him. She was planning to get to the pearl as soon as she got an opportunity whether the heads had been chopped off or not.
It was probably the same for him. They were destined to double cross each other, such was the nature of the small world competition and they both knew it.
She still smiled and shrugged. Three in this fight was better than two.
"Sure." she said.
