Chapter 461: Lucky professor Sham
On arriving at the main public hospital in London, Scarlet was taken to the boardroom to meet a group of doctors, pharmacists and nurses to discuss the recent infection which according to statistics shared between the planets was rapidly spreading.
Justin had woken up in the middle of the night and thrown up. Severus noticed something weird in the vomit and he called Scarlet to collect and have it inspected.
Immediately, the sample was sent to professor Sham and now, she was here to here the results of the test.
She too the middle seat, was handed a tablet by professor Sham who was sitting next to her.
"Let’s begin." he told the nurse who was standing at the front of the room.
The conference room was filled with about fifty doctors and others more were participating via hologram video calls from their cities.
Behind the nurse was a screen showing a couple of graphs, numbers and symptoms.
The female nurse nervously scratched the back of the chair in front of her and smiled stiffly. She sort of looked physically sick as if she was about to throw up.
"Take your time." Scarlet told her.
She straightened herself and adjusted her standing and looked at the crowd of colleagues she was addressing.
"Hello, welcome everyone. I am nurse Kao Kao and I work with the interplanetary doctors but I am officially assigned to the Blue star. Exactly one month ago, we were informed about a random case of illness that a boy on the Green star came down with.
He was admitted to the Summer vine hospital with a sore throat and he was tested and given some medicine. However, no kind of medicine was able to help, the boy kept getting worse and he died after three weeks."
She touched her tablet and the image on the screen changed.
"These are the images from the interplanetary doctor database of the boy. Videos are also available if you need to study them closely.
To broaden on the strange illness I will share the symptoms of the boy whose name is Mitchel Poden.
First was the sore throat, in two days it turned into a light cough. Doctors admitted the standard treatments and it looked like they would work but five days later the cough returned, heavy and bloody so he was put in an isolation ward.
In the second week, his body was assailed by a weird coldness. Heat pills were given and they alleviated the condition but not by much.
He became weirdly violent, attacking everyone that came close, including his family members.
In the third week, his eyes turned yellow and his body lost all color exposing all the veins in his body."
She shared the image of a pale almost translucent boy whose green veins were completely exposed. He was practically skin and bones, as if something had sucked away all of his body fat.
The biggest thing on his body were his wide yellow eyes which were haunted as if he had seen something horrifying.
A couple of gasps went around the room at the image of the boy.
"He died, suddenly at the completion of the third week. Just like everyone who dies in unusual circumstances, his body was incinerated to prevent a possible outbreak.
The case was tabled since there were many unknowns. However, last week, the grey star reported five of these cases and a team of interplanetary doctors was dispatched upon notice.
The patients were quickly isolated and it was assumed that the condition had been controlled but that doesn’t seem to be the case.
Whatever this illness is, it found it’s way to the children of the Blue star who had taken a school trip. When they returned home, they spread it to others and now we have one hundred twelve cases of what we have now named yellow eyes disease.
Because the Blue star has the largest number of yellow eye patients so far, the emergency meeting of interplanetary doctors and local health officials is being held to discuss how this strange illness should be handled. If you have a thought to share please press the green button in front of your table and we will give you audience.
Instantly, around twenty green buttons lit up.
Nurse Kao Kao was puzzled, who should she pick up first to speak?
"You, in the red shirt." Scarlet saved her the trouble and made the choice.
The doctors looked around for a red shirt and a few smiled when they recognized him. He was one of the crankiest doctors on the Blue star.
He was a doctor that actually disliked being around people. How he ended up in this profession, nobody knew.
"I am professor Glen." the middle aged doctor in a red shirt informed Scarlet with an unhappy look on his face.
Scarlet smiled and said, "Pardon me please, I do not know the names of every professional here. I simply chose you because you look like one of the wisest of all the doctors in the room."
That was not why she picked him to speak. Honestly, it was because the man had a weird moustache. One of those long moustaches that curved upwards as if he had stepped straight out of an animation.
Scarlet had been looking at it on and off as the nurse addressed them.
All she wanted to do was see if the moustache moved when he talked.
Professor Glen however was happy because he had been called wise. In his opinion, this governor really had good eyes. Indeed, he was a wise man. Wiser than professor Sham the head of the Blue star doctors, in his opinion.
If only he had responded to the recruitment back then when the Blue star first needed doctors.
Professor Glen was not the only one with this opinion. Most of the highly qualified professors in the room who outranked professor Sham had the same regret.
They were jealous that professor Sham always received new research from the governor, secret projects and an infinite budget.
He also got a high salary, a chance to wine dine with some members of the royal family, treat them and associate with powerful figures in the empire.
If they had all known they would be the ones in his position now.
Professor Glen looked at the nurse and asked, "Do we know how the disease is spreading?"
Nurse Kao Kao shook her head.
"No, we have theories for now. So far the strongest suspicion we have air as a means of spreading because of the cough but there is no definite proof.
All those who were infected on the grey star seemed to have paid a visit to the new amusement park ponds so water as a means of spreading has not ruled out as well."
Scarlet pointed to another doctor.
"I am professor Dinka," he said first.
Was everyone here a professor? Scarlet asked herself.
