Chapter 435: Severus vs the banshee

He tracked her down in Nordem, where she was reaping souls in a different city from the one they had been to yesterday. Since he had not been with her since the picnic, he had no idea why she had moved or why that silly banshee was hanging around her.

"Sister, this is the place, right?" he heard the banshee say.

"No, none of the souls I have asked has seen the artifact." She replied to it.

"But that’s not possible, sister I spoke to the one eyed behemoth and it said that the artifact is called a shard of misfortune. It produces a sound that attracts misfortune to the holder and that it was with the family of a boy in this city.

It said that the father fell ill, his whole body was covered in boils and he died. The mother went crazy, the sister drowned, those human sellers took the rest of the children but the youngest boy was not among them.

It said the youngest boy had run away with a bag that belonged to his father and in the bag was the shard of misfortune." The banshee spoke so surely as if she had witnessed these events herself.

Scarlet could not deny that something dark had taken place in this city. There were more monsters here than anywhere else, and perhaps it was true that the missing artifact had passed through.

The air here smelled pungent, dominated by evil that burned even her nostrils. Or maybe she just imagined the burning sensation but the smell of evil was truly strong here.

It was even more present and ominous than the black clouds of smoke which hovered over the city. Dark clouds which overpowered even the rays of light from the sun were never a good thing.

It’s why she believed the banshee that followed her around like a little puppy.

But, not a single soul she questioned had seen it. At this point things might be smoother if she asked around for the boy who escaped and not the artifact itself.

"Did he tell you where the boy lived?" she asked.

The banshee shook her head.

"What about the souls, what happened to them?"

If she could maybe speak to the parents she could find out where they lived or where the boy had run to.

"It ate them." The banshee told her.

So now I have no leads, Scarlet thought. Her shoulders sagged as she came to the conclusion that this was yet another wasted journey which yielded zero fruits.

She might as well share the information with other grim reapers and see what they could do with it.

"Go and search for the one eyed behemoth and try to see if he remembers the location of the house." she told the banshee.

"No need." Severus said.

She had known that he was behind her all this time so she didn’t turn around when she heard his voice.

"Follow me, I can track everywhere it has been. Monster energy cannot hide from me." He went on to say.

That’s how he had been tracking the harpy, he simply followed her energy.

They teleported from one place to another, and everywhere they went, Scarlet took a look around and looked for the deepest concentration of misfortune and grief.

Eventually, after searching through half of a large city because the gluttonous one eyed behemoth had eaten that many souls, they found a place.

It was in an apartment in one of the sky scrappers that was still standing. Ideally, a place like this should have been inhabited by humans but there was not a single soul alive here.

A hoard of evil souls had taken up residence in the building, and many innocent souls were trapped within.

For the first time, Scarlet saw one of the reapers of this world, as identified by Severus.

She was engaged in a battle against the soul eaters, one versus a dozen of them at least and despite being outnumbered, she seemed to be holding her ground just fine.

"Ember, number six on the leaderboard." he mentioned.

It was a tiny female reaper with short cropped hair. She was a warrior reaper, this conclusion Scarlet came to once she saw the red on her scythe.

She moved so skillfully, gliding on the wind and using the momentum of the evil souls against them.

Within two minutes, she took down all twelve soul eaters, even slicing off the heads of three of them. When she was finished, Scarlet wanted to applaud her because she was thrilling to watch.

"Sister, I think you are better than her." The banshee said.

Scarlet scoffed and chuckled.

"Kiss ass." Severus mumbled.

Ember saw Scarlet, nodded in acknowledgment and teleported, moving to the upper floors. It seemed, she was here to clear out the building and free the souls.

"Let’s do our job as well." Scarlet told Severus.

They located the apartment quickly and went inside. It was small in size, and it had been trashed. It carried a stench of rot, blood, waste and malevolence.

Scarlet pinched her nose and gagged while her face twisted in disgust.

"What is that smell?" she asked Severus.

"Behemoth, death, pus and blood." Severus who was unbothered replied.

His paws poked around the things which had been littered on the floor, clothes, spoons, baskets, electric equipment, some jewelry, money.

"I have found you a picture." he told Scarlet.

She was busy putting a gas mask around her head so that she would have to smell the rot and evil anymore. It made her want to vomit and then take a bath.

She came closer and saw the picture frame he had found. It was a picture of a family of seven, two adults and five children. The glass frame had been shattered and Severus was wiping the broken glass shards away with his paw.

"Move, I will just mental strength." she told him.

She lifted the picture in the air and the broken glass fell to the floor loudly, making a racket in the quiet apartment.

She took a picture and uploaded it to the group chat.

[Possible human traveling with the shard.]

"Wait, there are two boys in this picture, so which boy escaped?" Severus asked.

"We have just made progress, do you have to dump on it?" The banshee spoke to Severus.

"We!!!" Severus uttered in confusion.

When did the banshee become a part of their team?

"Yes, we, me and sister." The banshee replied so seriously.

To her, the hound had done nothing but sniff around, she had been the one to bring the identity.

"You mean my partner." Severus answered proudly. "You have no relation to us."

Displeased, the banshee floated before Scarlet and pointed to Severus.

"Sister, can we get rid of the dog?" she asked softly.

"Hey, stupid monster, were you created with a few missing screws in your head? Who are you calling a dog you white haired freak? And stop calling my reaper your sister." Severus barked.

"Sister, sister, sister." The banshee said, over and over.

The banshee then did something childlike that stunned Scarlet. She put her fingers in her ears, stuck her tongue out and went, brrrrrr.

Severus was stumped while Scarlet snorted twice and broke into a loud deep laughter.
