Chapter 365: An unexpected food street
After gliding, they left the flying skies building on foot and walked around the street, talking about silly little things. As they walked slowly, hand in hand, Esong played tour guide, pointing out the different buildings and what took place inside them.
The capital really came to life at night because the streets were full of happy people shopping, others were standing around and watching street fights. They found a group of dancers whose athleticism blew her mind. A while later, a voice attracted both of their attention.
"Chicken on a stick, step up and buy." a loud vice called.
"Oh, this is new." Esong stopped and said.
Scarlet was surprised as well and both of them tilted their heads looking to the opposite side of the road. Across from them was an alley which was crowded and more people were heading that way. If one sniffed the air carefully, they would detect the distinct smell of roasted foods coming from that way.
"Food?" Scarlet said questioningly.
"Food." Esong replied plainly.
"Can we go and take a look?" she asked him.
He put on his blue cloak with a hood that covered most of his face and helped her do the same so that they would be less recognized. He then led her by the hand to the alley which was quite new to his eyes. It was sitting between a bowling alley and Falin nutrients company building.
Immediately when they headed down what would have been a shady alley under different circumstances, their senses were assaulted by the strong smells of smoke, spices and meat. The noise in the alley was loud between the customers who were haggling and the sellers who were loudly announcing their foods even though they had display signs above their stalls with holograms of what they were selling.
She was very impressed because despite of the overcrowding, the stalls were neatly arranged, backed up against the walls. To further maintain order, RGB officers could be spotted hovering in a few spots with weapons in hand and shields on their heads.
"I have been away from the capital for too long." Esong said.
"I can’t believe that they created a food street before we did." Scarlet said in disbelief.
"Rice balls, spicy rice balls, sweet rice balls, only one hundred star coins each."
"Sorbet, perfect for a hot day." a woman’s voice called.
"Sweet and soft braised duck, it will melt on your tongue." a man shouted.
The calls to attract customers entertained Scarlet and she giggled, wondering how a piece of duck melted on someone’s tongue. Was it cooked so tenderly that it tuned soft and melted like ice cream?
"Do you want anything to eat?" Esong asked her.
"I want to see the chicken on a stick." she told him.
She was not so hungry because she had eaten before they left their suite and she added the cake pop. But, the different smells in this alley did make her curious. Were the snacks as good as the sellers claimed? The prices were also quite high, even higher than those of the Blue star for most of the foods.
She had to give these people credit because they were so quick to catch on. She had prepared sorbet only a few hours ago and already it was being sold by someone.
Her hand steadily remained in large one as he led her to the stall of the man selling chicken on a stick. It was four small golden brown pieces of roasted chicken on a silver stick. Between each piece of chicken was a different colored roasted pepper.
"Chicken skewers." she muttered.
"Welcome wise customer," the man in a white chef’s uniform and hat said loudly and jovially. Sitting behind him on a high stool was his young daughter. He had been looking down when he welcomed them, pulling fresh skewers out of the large silver grill.
"How much?" Esong asked him.
The man looked up and looked at the two customers standing in front of his food stand. Their faces were mostly covered up so he didn’t swell much on them. Their cloaks however were incredibly expensive and they stood out in this crowd of ordinary commoners. His eyes went to the crests on the cloaks but the crests suddenly faded out like lights going out instantly.
"How much?" Esong asked again.
"Two hundred." the little girl said, with two fingers on her right hand raised.
"Three hundred." her father said.
Esong looked between father and daughter, and he knew that the father lied. He had increased the price basing on the cloaks they wore. With the way his wife was smiling at the little girl like she was so precious, he closed his eyes and paid for two chicken on a stick.
The vendor packed them carefully and Esong put them in his storage bracelet.
"Do you want anything else?" he asked.
"Rice balls and the sweet and braised ducks." she said. "I have also seen honey juice cocktails and shrimp balls." She mentioned more foods as they walked away from the chicken on a stick vendor.
"Father, that is the chef lady." his daughter whispered to him.
The chicken on a stick vendor was confused, he had had no idea who the chef lady was and he had new customers to attend to. He paid no mind to the words of his three year old daughter.
Everything that she mentioned, Esong bought and kept away, to be eaten when they were in a much freer environment. When they left the food street with a portion of almost everything, his flying car met them, guided by the AI and they set off.
"Where should we go next?" she asked him.
He looked at the sky and said, "The comet museum, we can watch old comets falling and listen to the hilarious narrations as we feast on the foods that we have bought. I doubt that they will be as good as what you cook though." Nobody cooked as good as she did.
"Sounds wonderful, first hand over one chicken on a stick. I am too greedy to wait, my mouth wants to try one." She licked her lips anticipating a sweet taste.
"No, no food in the car." he quickly said. The last time she ate something inside of his car she left crumbs and a sticky mess. When she used her hands to eat she was as messy as Justin.
She tugged on his cloak and pouted her lips.
"No," he looked away from her and stayed firm in his decision.
She sighed, lowered her car seat and laid down imagining the taste of the chicken skewers as she thought about making some herself the next day or when she returned home. Her mind traveled back to the the food street and she shook her head in wonder, the people were really quick. This discovery made her proud of herself for doing the live broadcast, it was evidence that people were really learning and putting what they learned to use. Perhaps it was time to do a live broadcast for street foods like hot dogs, burritos, tacos, tofu, stuffed buns and other sewers.
"Are you having fun?" Esong asked her.
"Incredibly." she told him. She softened her voice and said, "Thank you for another wonderful date." He had not hesitated to spend his money, hold her hand, carry her bags and keep her comfortable and happy. She was becoming spoiled slowly, not even planning dates anymore because he did that and she was loving it.
