Chapter 342: The almighty hound nose
Immediately, she contacted captain Zorl because the situation would go out of hand soon. Either the pricker would fall victim to mob violence or another kind of carnage would break out in the mall, like a stampede.
While Tion led her to the security office of the mall, she finally got captain Zorl on the phone.
"Captain, I don’t know how things are done in the RGB but this is really not appropriate. How do you hope to catch the pricker in this mess?"
Captain Zorl’s resigned voice came from the other end of the phone and he said, "I had no idea that you were keeping tabs on the investigation governor. Is there something specific that you wish to know?"
"Yes, I wish to know how you plan to proceed with the operation in the middle of this chaos? Even if you arrest the criminal what follows next is going to be a nightmare. Everyone will be trying to take his picture, a video or something." She told him.
The captain replied, "It’s too late and too suspicious to order for a full evacuation of the mall and the criminal cannot be caught I..."
"Found something." Severus said.
Scarlet did not hear the rest of the captain’s explanation because she heard this great news from Severus. If he had found the criminal then the case could be closed even faster and the beautiful Blue star would be the safest star planet in the Sun star empire again.
"I have to go captain thank you for your time, keep up the good work." She hurriedly said and cut him off, hanging up on him as well.
She looked around the security room and saw the thirty seven security officers standing rigidly to the side with their arms folded behind their backs.
Tion was standing in front of them and appraising them from head to toe like a squadron leader.
The poor security officers had to be extremely nervous and probably thinking that she was here for them.
"Please don’t be nervous I am here to find something so return to your stations and monitor your screens." She told them.
Each of them was watching at least four screens at a time, keeping an eye on the entire mall.
"Where is my dog?" She asked Tion as the men returned to work.
The security guard at the furthest corner of the office raised his hand and said, "The black dog is in the ground floor parking."
This was a section which he was responsible for monitoring and he proudly pointed at Severus who was sitting on the ground in the midst of a few cars.
"Thank you." She smiled and said to him.
Then, she, Tion and the rest of her guards left the mall quickly, heading to where Severus was waiting for her.
He was pretty easy to locate, and she found him prancing around impatiently since he had long accomplished his task.
She squatted down and rubbed his head gently. "What is it buddy? What did you find?"
She scanned the ground as she asked him this question, searching with keen eyes for whatever Severus had found.
Tion and the other guards copied her actions, searching for anything that appeared to be out of place.
She noticed a minor twinkling glimmer on the ground and her eyes concentrated on it. It was a needle, long and sharp with a small yellow cap at the top.
With one gloved hand, she picked it up and raised it to her eyes for observation. On it’s tip was dried blood, and Scarlet could not even begin to guess how she knew but she had a strong feeling that it three day old blood. The needle must have been on the ground for a long while. The yellow cap and a part of the long needle was sticky and it smelled like candy and that in itself was abnormal.
"What’s this?" She asked herself. The question was not what the needle was but what it was used for.
"I have seen these with some of the seamstresses who work in the old clothing factory." Tion said.
"We have stopped at least three of these from being brought into the castle. I have also seen some with red caps." Another guard said.
She got a small tin from her space and kept the needle away, it was evidence after all. Then, she stood up and looked around without a plan in mind.
"Now what?" Tion asked her. How were they going to proceed?
She in turn looked at Severus and asked him, "Did you detect any strong scents from the needle? I only got a minor whiff of something."
"Let’s go, my almighty hound nose will find it for you." He replied arrogantly.
They returned to the cars and set off immediately with Severus’s head hanging out of the window. Every time he barked, Scarlet asked the driver to take a turn. She hoped that they would not have to go all the way to the new district to find answers.
Eventually, they arrived at one of the newly opened parks in the middle of the city, Saint Bernard park. It was green and vibrant area, enclosed in a short transparent shield which was surrounded by young budding yellow roses. Inside the park was a play area designated for children, ice cream and snack stands and most importantly, a pet play area. Even before the completion of the park, it had been a highly frequented place by the spirit and ordinary pets which travelled all the way from the castle and young children who had yet to fully embark on the new school term.
Even at that very moment, the park was filled with warm and cheerful laughter, most of which she could attribute to children who were running around with pets. In addition to the children were adults who were sitting on mats under different types of shade as they kept watchful eyes over their children. Others were sleeping, eating snacks, watching movies or riding bikes on the paved pathways. Whatever they were doing, they were all happy.
Scarlet let Severus loose and he sniffed his way through the happy people, eventually taking a tumble over a large rainbow colored ball when he did not look where he was going. That tumble landed him on top of a young woman who was sleeping. She was so stunned that she started screaming at the top of her lungs. Scarlet hurried to carry Severus off of the young woman’s body and tender at least a dozen polite apologies before they moved along.
"That was not my fault." Severus told her.
"Hmm, so your almighty hound nose did not see the ball." she replied sarcastically.
He stopped walking walking and asked her, "Should I stop here and let you take charge?"
"No, my almighty hound, please continue searching." she told him.
The park was at least sixty square miles, how could she search this big place alone unless she was in her grim reaper form? His nose would get the job done much faster.
They followed Severus through turns and curves in the park until when they came to an area where trees had been planted on opposite sides with branches hovering over a large walk way. When the trees blossomed fully in a month or so, they would form a tree tunnel. Families, couples or friends were taking pictures and wannabe painters also occupied some spaces, drawing portraits for those who wished. The scenery brought a smile to her lips and she would have enjoyed it more if she was not on a mission.
"It’s him." Severus stopped and declared.
